Aye, there's the rub; finding an actual "decent repair shop"!

Mark -
The" power supply" is an outlet in my wall - is that what you mean?

The wall outlet is your power source. Inside the player is a bunch of
electronic gubbins that takes that power and divvies it out to the various
motors, amplifiers and radio curcuits. That is the power supply that Mark
refers to. There are a number of (probably) simple issues that would cause your
signs. If you can find a decent repair shop, it may be repairable for less than
the price of a replacement.

Kits for fixing the Emerson TV power supplies are about $25

Yes, the same thing happened, in effect - with the tape and cd player...
it wouldnt come on ... and actually the cd player suddenly started playing
when I just left the cd I had in it sit.. and the tape player worked
and then didn't...

I'm dumb about these things...

This is what it does now. I turn on the radio and get silence...
thinking I turned it off a walk away and quite a while later the radio
comes on.
...snip....
anyone know what is going on here? I remember years ago things needed to
warm up before playing... but it didn't take 30 minutes.
Probably a dodgy voltage regulator in the power supply. Does the CD
player or cassette part of this thing show the same symptoms?
