Nope. I was referring to the power supply internal to the boom box:
Transformer, rectifier diodes, capacitors and several voltage
regulators.

So everything stays lit up and the tape or CD keeps moving physically
but no sound comes out?

It does sound like a bad voltage regulator. This is typically a linear
regulator in these kinds of devices, a 3-pin integrated circuit
device. It could even be just a bad solder joint which makes a
connection only after it's reached a certain temperature. Hard to say
without opening it up and having a look around inside.
