Abd ul-Rahman,
Let's just let it die! I understood your description just fine, what do
you not understand about your method importing only dumb Gerber primitives
without the related intelligence that was originally in the design?
You are operating on a set of assumptions that don't match the
case/issue(s) and I don't have the time to detail them all out for you. I can
flip the design "for assembly documentation" and manipulate (note I don't
detail the manipulation required) it as fast or faster than you can do it in
Gerber without the problem of re-importing Gerber that 'may' not import into
Protel properly.
Nobody has said anything about flipping the whole board layer
structure, so that is just one example of you operating on unrelated
assumptions. Secondly, whoever mentioned flipping text? Not I. Layer pairing?
Not mentioned other than by you.
The only relevant portion of anything that I mentioned was the bounding
extents change when rotating/flipping components with hidden designators or
comments. If you have detail related to that or how to avoid it then let's
discuss it, in the meantime this is going wildly off track without full
understanding of our processes and methods.
Sincerely,
Brad Velander

Subject: Re: [PEDA] Something off the board
Yes, except that it is not true that the gerber import solution
offers "no more efficiency," and I suspect also that Mr. Velander did
not understand the description. First, flipping the board, when text
is involved, involves some complications, which is precisely why this
whole topic came up. If we had a "Flip entire design" command, this
could be easier, to be sure. However, there are some ... issues ...
to be resolved, in particular layer pairing issues. I would not be
happy with a Flip command applied to the whole board unless it really
did produce an exactly equivalent PCB that, all by itself, could be
fabricated and be identical to the original board.
