It is pretty straightforward to export any data structure stored in the binary files as XML, using common encoding algorithms and identification for the data that is binary in source (e.g. using MIME standards). XML is not the most efficient form and also not the most easily readable for humans, but it is a well-defined standard and enough tools are around to make it readable. And it is, because of its standardization, easy to implement.
