Well, not that I can't get anything done, just that it was more annoying
than I had the patience for at the time I tried to learn. For example:
use PDL::Graphics::PLplot;
$w=new PDL::Graphics::PLplot(DEV=>'xwin');
$x=sequence(10);
$y=$x*$x;
$w->xyplot($x,$y,PLOTTYPE=>'LINE'); ##nothing happens
$w->xyplot($x,$y,PLOTTYPE=>'LINE'); ##now it makes the plot
##and every new xyplot command has to be entered twice
$w->close; ##nothing happens until I click on the window and then press
'enter'
I don't have those problems if I write to a png, and considering that
>95% of my plotting is to xwin, I stopped fiddling with it. And,
admittedly lazily, put off contacting the author until I could see if it
was a PLplot issue or a PDL::Graphics::PLplot issue. Also, it's
apparent that there are many many low-level functions, which is great,
but I can't use them (again, lazily, because I haven't read the main
PLplot docs) if all I know about them is "info not available, *** does
not process bad values." This is on my personal list of PDL todos,
"Learn PLplot and write some more docs for it", I just haven't done it yet.

implemented. One there is a nice high-level interface to it within
PDL, we can all stop hassling about this stuff and get some work
done! :-)

I have to say, though, the navbar on pdl.perl.org looks a bit, um,
less than
fully impressive. That might push some away. Heck, upgrading the

every year or so makes people assured someone is paying attention

reading the list ;)
The graphics examples are certainly nice, but maybe it would be
nice if the
explanation of the commands used (inserted as single line # perl
comments?)
Another issue is ease of installation of PDL + a set of basic
support libs. I have it cracked now on Mac OS X but linux and
windows remain an issue. Linux is difficult because of the wide
variety of distros, however the all work with the IDL binary
distro so it may be doable.
From my perspective, you only need debian and redhat. I think
many other
distros can handle their formats.
But there is one problem with Debian, for sure. Graphics/PGPLOT/
PGPLOT.pm uses PGPLOT.pm but PGPLOT isn't in debian. I'm not a
debian developer, Perhaps I
should become one, for this.
FYI: I'm a professional perl programmer who took a good bit of
math in college.
I had this one problem for which a graphical 3d solution would be
ideal. Still haven't
figured out the right way to use points3d the way I want.
