Healthcare is absolutely not a right... The same as public education and Social Security. But is healthcare reform the right thing to do for our country?
People argue against it with various lame ducks arguments e.g. "We have the best health care in the world, don't mess it up" http://www.photius.com/rankings/healthranks.html The WHO ranks us 37th between Costa Rica and Slovenia. "It will ruin our economy" http://www.x-rates.com/ Canada, Great Britian, and the EU all have free health care. Our currency is worth 70% of the Pound and Euro. How could a healthier work force harm America? How could a security blanket from a global pandemic hurt America? Americans did not make such a fuss when Bush funneled more than a trillion (that's 1,000,000,000,000) dollars of our money into corporate bank accounts. Is this the capitalist system at its finest? I didn't see people holding signs of Bush with a Hitler moustache, screaming "socialism". The classical ideal of how much government we should have dates back thousands of years. It's simply "We should rely on the Government for things we cannot rely on ourselves" i.e. When the Constitution was written I would wager at least 90% of all Americans were almost or entirely self sufficient. They grew their own food, made their own clothes, taught their own children etc.. That is not the case today. We live in a different world than our founding fathers.
