What do you use to count smears for alpha/ beta activity?    Ludlum 3030, 
Protean WPC-9550, Tennelec 5XLB, iSolo

Do you have a limit on the activity (dpm) that can be counted using a smear 
counter?  250,000 dpm

And if you have a limit on activity, what is the limit and how do you count 
smears above the activity limit (beta) for alpha?
Direct measurement with an ion-chamber, take a smaller sample & apply a scaling 
factor
