Palo Verde provides the following response:

We currently use the Eberline BC-4 (beta) and SAC-4 (alpha) and are evaluating
both the Canberra iSolo and Ludlum 3030P

We limit smears to 50,000 dpm/100 cm2

For alpha smears > 50k we have designated a few SAC-4s or we count and recount
the smears. For beta we either cut or count with an ion chamber survey
instrument

Subject: Powernet: Alpha Counting

Duke Energy request to following information:

What do you use to count smears for alpha/ beta activity? Canberra iSolo,
Ludlum 3030P, other?

Do you have a limit on the activity (dpm) that can be counted using a smear
counter?

And if you have a limit on activity, what is the limit and how do you count
smears above the activity limit (beta) for alpha?
