THE WEEKEND NEWSLETTER
AMERICA'S NEWSCHANNEL MSNBC
Saturday January 18, 2003- Sunday January 19, 2003

Just in time for the Golden Globes... we're rolling out the HEADLINERS &
LEGENDS of some of your favorite nominees and past winners. Throughout the weekend
you can catch the biographies of Jack Nicholson, Goldie Hawn, Cameron Diaz, Russell
Crowe, Tom Hanks and Halle Berry. Saturday Night, join us for a "Serial Killers
Marathon" which kicks off at 8pm ET taking you inside the lives of some of the most
notorious serial killers including Jeffrey Dahmer and Ted Bundy.
Then on Sunday at 8pm ET, we bring you the PREMIERE of NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC
EXPLORER: IN THE SHADOW OF SADDAM where we take you to one of the world's most
politically significant hotspots -- the Kurdish enclave in northern Iraq known as
Kurdistan. The lingering shadow of past violence, political infighting, and economic
hardship continues to plague their society, yet Kurdistan offers an antidote to the
stereotypical view of the Middle East as fanatical Muslims and autocratic regimes.
Kurdistan is fairly democratic, has a free press, and has separation of religion and
the state. Is this what a democratic Iraq could look like?
And at 10pm ET on Sunday, tune in for the latest premiere in our LOCKUP
SERIES. Illinois Governor George Ryan's shocked the country, with his dramatic
decision to grant clemency to every death row inmate. Now, MSNBC takes you "INSIDE
STATEVILLE", a rough and intense, maximum-security prison outside Chicago, where more
than a thousand inmates are doing time for murder.

Now, here's a peek at this weekend's schedule:

SATURDAY, JANUARY 18
6AM ET
HEADLINERS & LEGENDS: GOLDIE HAWN
**Nominated for BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE-MUSICAL OR COMEDY
for her role in "The Banger Sisters".**
Over the past four decades, she's been a comedian, a sex symbol and a ditzy blond. In
real life, Goldie Hawn is anything but that. She is, in fact, one of the most powerful
women in Hollywood. And it seems her daughter, Kate Hudson, isn't far behind her.

7AM ET
HEADLINERS & LEGENDS: JACK NICHOLSON
**Nominated for BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE-DRAMA for his role in
"About Schmidt".**
He's one of Hollywood's legendary Oscar-winning bad boys. From a lunatic in "One Flew
Over The Cukoo's Nest" to an eccentric compulsive in "As Good As It Gets," Jack
Nicholson has got what it takes to stay at the top of Hollywood's "A" list.

12PM ET
HEADLINERS & LEGENDS: RUSSELL CROWE
Not so long ago Russell Crowe was largely unknown to the American public. A string of
powerful performances, a high-profile romance and a reputation for being difficult
changed all that. Behind the gruff exterior is an enigmatic character, a tender
songwriter and a die-hard musician.

1PM ET
HEADLINERS & LEGENDS: TOM HANKS
Tom Hanks has made us laugh for decades, but his serious side is just as Oscar-worthy.
He has a unique ability to capture hearts and minds in many roles. He is well on his
way to being one of the most loved, most successful, most critically-acclaimed actors
in Hollywood history. In the case of Tom Hanks, nice guys don't always finish last.

2PM ET
HEADLINERS & LEGENDS: HALLE BERRY
Her beauty has landed her on magazine covers and movie screens. Her talent has earned
her an Oscar. But behind the dazzling smile, Halle Berry is an actress who has seen
more than her fair share of heartache. At a young age she found the sense of
determination that has carried her as far as she could dream and then some.

6PM ET
NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC EXPLORER: BRAZIL'S VANISHING COWBOYS
For over a hundred years, Brazil's Pantanal cowboys have earned a living and shaped a
culture against the backdrop of a wetland wilderness. This is not a life for the
timid. On one of earth's largest alluvial plains, the cowboys ride alongside snakes,
through piranha-infested waters, and into jaguar territory. This is a life in many
ways at odds with the modern world. Clashing with the invasion of technology and newly
enacted environmental protections, the lifestyle of these cowboys is under pressure to
change.
Boyd Matson hosts.

a college student. Then a librarian and then a lonely single mom. All of them...
missing. All of then linked to one man who seemed so kind. We take a look into a

determined to be more than just another pretty face. Cameron Diaz has made her share
of mistakes, but she knows just what she wants and never lets anything slow her down.

MSNBC INVESTIGATES: LOCKUP: INSIDE STATEVILLE
Stateville Correctional Center is a maximum-security facility located forty-five
minutes southwest of Chicago. Nearly half of the twenty-six hundred inmates are in
for murder. Another 25 percent are serving time for the commission of violent crimes.
One thousand men are in for twenty years to life. The prison's always been home to
some of the state's most violent criminals. For a long time it had the reputation for
being a place where the inmates challenged the guards for control. How that changed
is the big story behind the walls of Stateville.
John Seigenthaler hosts.

2AM ET
WEEKEND MAGAZINE: AMANDA'S STORY/TEXAS PREACHER
AMANDA'S STORY-We begin with the story of a girl who longs for something she barely
had: A childhood. That's because many years ago, Amanda and her mother went into
hiding, vanishing into an underground network that has hidden hundreds of mothers and
children from allegedly abusive fathers. When we first brought you Amanda's story,
four years ago, she was 15, and already a veteran of life on the run. As you'll see,
much has happened since then. John Hockenberry reports. TEXAS PREACHER-The townsfolk
said it best: They were good, God-fearing people. Our final story centers on a young
minister and his wife, new to their small Texas town. But excitement over the family's
arrival soon turned to shock -- Because one afternoon, the new minister stepped inside
his parsonage...And into a crime scene. Rob Stafford reports.

3AM ET
MSNBC INVESTIGATES: THE MAN WITH MANY WIVES
Go behind the story of Tom Green, a man with 15 wives and dozens of children, facing
trial for Polygamy in Utah, where it has rarely been prosecuted.

4AM ET
MSNBC INVESTIGATES: THE LIFESTYLE
Is America on the verge of another cultural sexual revolution? What is out of bounds
for a marriage? We're sure this program about couples who "swap" partners will spark
some interesting conversation at your house. We explore the counter-culture lifestyle
of swingers and meet four couples who are just getting to know each other.

5AM ET
MSNBC INVESTIGATES: THE SECRET WARDROBE
Did you know that many cross dressers wear women's clothing because they say it helps
them relax or relieve stress? In this program we meet several men who lead
more-or-less traditional lives. They are professionals, some have families--and most
of them share a secret. An inside look at a world that is surprisingly the province
of happily married, heterosexual males, the world of cross-dressing.
