Dear David, thanks for this, but where is the "place" command? Or are we talking about PASTE using "enter" as you say?

It's "hidden" right there under the "FILE" menu right below "revert." ;-)
At least in Photoshop 6 and 7. There are limits on the "types" of files that this works with, but believe that .ai (illustrator) .eps (ecapsulated postscript), .pdf (acrobat) and .pdp (???) show up as placeable files.
