One of the arrested men was reportedly intoxicated. Sexual harassment of school girls is not a new phenomena in Egypt, but security forces are paying more attention to it in recent years. General Adel Ref’at, head of Suez security, said that police patrols will continue to guard girls’ schools in the city, making sure that no harassment takes place when school is out. Earlier this month, the head of the National Council of Women (NCW) Mervat Tallawy said that Egyptian women are harassed, on average, “7 times every 200 meters.” Her comments came as the issue of Egypt’s sexual harassment epidemic continued to make international headlines. Last week, a woman was murdered after she lashed out at a man in Assuit who had groped her, the Egyptian Center for Women’s Rights (ECWR) reported. The man, after the woman said she would claim her rights, shot her in the chest, leaving her to die.
