I think it boils down to whether amateur radio is just a casual hobby for someone or something where there's real passion involved. If it's "just another hobby", then if the part they enjoy goes away they'll just go off and do something else. If they are passionate about some aspect of it, they will work to make it the best they feel it can be. Of course of these people in the passionate group, there will not be 100% agreement on what is "best". At some time or another there will be heated debate and situations where it is not possible for all parties to have their ideal version of amateur radio. IF there is a need for change perhaps an acceptable compromise can be reached.
