Here in Michigan, I rely on a good base layer (AKA long johns) under my regular clothes. I generally use a light fleece jacket and convertible mittens with a microfiber neck gaiter to pull up over mouth and nose when I need to. That usually keeps me from over heating. Only in extreme cold, <20 F do I resort to a hip length ski coat with a hood. When it's that cold I also use my ski helmet and goggles, but I usually end up getting too hot.
