[18] Tributes to Keane
---------------------------------
Posted Tuesday, June 13, 2006 by ed:
from BBC

Eamon Dunphy - Keane's biographer
He will be remembered as a great footballer and a very charismatic, candid and
intelligent man - quite a unique figure.

He has taken his coaching qualifications and he would be a great coach and
manager. He has all the qualities for the job. He was Sir Alex Ferguson's
enforcer on the field at Manchester United, his leader.

He had turbulent periods in his life. He's an extremely candid man and that can
land you in bother from time to time.

But when the smoke of the controversies fade away, a great career of a great
Irish footballer will be remembered.

Paul Parker, former Man Utd colleague
He was one of the best captains Manchester United have ever had, alongside, or
maybe ahead, of Bryan Robson.

When he came to United he was loud and said what he thought - he didn't care
what he said to anybody but when you could play the way he could, the players
put up with the other side to him.

'A footballer's true worth is measured in part by the difficulty with which he
is replaced and for this reason alone Roy Keane will always be numbered among
Manchester United's greatest players. His retirement from the game, following a
brief appendix to his career at Celtic, finds United the poorer for his
absence.
While recurring injury problems indicated that Keane would have to give up
playing sooner rather than later, Sir Alex Ferguson's failed attempts to find
the Irishman's successor in midfield have underlined the immense contribution
Keane made to Manchester United's growing domination of the English game
through the 1990s and beyond.

On the pitch he was Ferguson's alter ego, bringing to the team all the rage for
perfection and impatience that the manager demanded. Keane's 12 years at Old
Trafford ended abruptly last November following a row with Ferguson over
critical comments about the team the United captain had made on the club's
television channel, the interview being pulled by MUTV for being too
inflammatory.
He had never been one to hold back where what he considered sub-standard
performances were concerned but this was clearly a rave too far. In fact Keane
had already announced his intention to leave Old Trafford this summer, having
been sidelined by a foot injury at Liverpool last September suffered in a
tackle with Steven Gerrard.

At least the storminess of Keane's departure was in keeping with much of his
playing career. He could enjoy a perfectly clean and disciplined game yet
remain a brooding, intimidating presence on the field. Channelled properly this
gave United's football an invaluable influence, although when Keane flipped the
outcome for an opponent could be painful and nasty.

Ferguson was aware of this. Recalling in his autobiography the incident during
the 1995 FA Cup semi-final against Crystal Palace at Villa Park, when Keane was
sent off after stamping on Gareth Southgate, the United manager observed: "His
Irish fire was fundamental to his immense value as a footballer but his
tendency to go beyond the bounds of acceptability would have to be curbed."

Generally Keane was able to preserve a proper balance between what was and what
was not acceptable. But the vengeful tackle on Alf Inge Haaland in a Manchester
derby and the subsequent admission in his autobiography that the foul was
premeditated, which brought him a five-match ban and a record £150,000 fine,
left a lingering sour taste.

So did his personal attack on Mick McCarthy, the Republic of Ireland manager
during the 2002 World Cup, which led to Keane leaving the Irish squad shortly
before the tournament began.

Against that the good memories of him will always be precious and none more so
than his contribution to Manchester United's greatest Champions League victory
when they defeated Juventus 3-2 in Turin in the second leg of their 1999
semi-final after going 2-0 down in 11 minutes. Keane received a booking which
was to rule him out of the final but went on to give one of his greatest
performances.

"I didn't think I could have a higher opinion of any footballer than I already
had of the Irishman," Ferguson recalled, "but he rose even further in my
estimation at the Stadio Delle Alpi. The minute he was booked and out of the
final he seemed to redouble his efforts to get the team there. It was the most
emphatic display of selflessness I have seen on a football field."

Keane was the ultimate team player which was one of the reasons Brian Clough
signed the slightly-built 19-year-old for £10,000 from Cobh Rangers in County
Cork and immediately put him in the Nottingham Forest team for a match away to
Liverpool. The first time Keane met his new team-mates was in the visitors'
dressing room at Anfield which also turned out to be his last port of call for
United.

Three years later, when Forest's relegation coincided with Clough's retirement,
Keane raced from the pitch at the City Ground like one who could not bear to be
associated with failure. This turned out to be his greatest strength and
Manchester United's midfield has struggled to cope in its absence.

'MALCOM GLAZER and sons took a real financial gamble when they took over
Manchester United, saddling the iconic club with expensive debts totalling £540
million so they could claim their prize. Leeds United gave borrowing a bad name
in football, and fans across the Pennines are right to be concerned about the
risk that the clubs’ new owners have taken, supposedly on their behalf.

One year on, though, and the Glazers, and Man United fans, have reasons to be
more optimistic. With broadcasters tripping over themselves to show Premiership
football, domestic TV income will leap by about two thirds, helping the club to
£14 million a year not anticipated at the time of the Glazer buyout. Meanwhile,
Vodafone’s decision to cut short a shirt deal turned out to be another boon,
because along came AIG to pay £5 million a year more.

It is too soon to be definite, but these kinds of solid commercial deals should
herald good news. At the very least, they help to offset some on the pitch
mishaps, such as the failure to qualify for the knockout stages of the
Champions League — although they would not be enough in the event that Man
United somehow failed to qualify for Europe at all.

So it is hardly surprising that there is growing talk that the Glazer family
has an opportunity to refinance their debts. The timing is uncertain but the
quicker they take advantage of the more positive sentiment (what better
backdrop than a World Cup?) the better for the Old Trafford faithful. If the
opportunity is there, it should be seized — a motto that hopefully England will
also pursue.'

---------------------------------
[15] Glazers to refinance
---------------------------------
Posted Tuesday, June 13, 2006 by ed:
from Times on a long term rumour

'MANCHESTER UNITED’S owners, the Glazer family, are considering plans to ease
the club’s interest bills by refinancing the £540 million of debt taken on when
they bought the club last year, The Times has learnt.
The prospects for a successful refinancing have brightened because United’s
financial outlook has improved since the takeover, on the back of more
lucrative TV and shirt sponsorship deals. It is estimated that these are
together worth about £19 million a year more than the Glazers anticipated in
the confidential business plan that was leaked to The Times last year — more
than offsetting the loss of income from the failure to qualify for the
Champions League knockout stages. The timing of a refinancing is unclear, but
the Glazers are understood to be pleased with United’s financial prospects
despite warnings at the time of the takeover that they were overloading the
club with debt.

The family used NM Rothschild and JPMorgan to advise them during the takeover,
and the banks are likely to be involved in any future work. Most of the extra
money comes from the FA Premier League’s television rights deals. According to
the business plan, the Glazer family expected TV income of £28 million a year
between 2007 and 2010. The actual figure is likely to be about £42.5 million a
year. A shirt sponsorship deal with the insurer AIG will generate £14.1 million
a year over the next four seasons — £4.5 million more than forecast by the
Glazers.

The family took on borrowings with punitive interest rates to help them to buy
the club, including £210 million of preferred shares that accumulate interest
at a rate of 20 per cent, and a further £65 million at 14 per cent. A further
£265 million of bank borrowings attract rates of between 7.3 and 11.1 per cent
at current rates.'

[12] Rooney not to play yet
---------------------------------
Posted Tuesday, June 13, 2006 by ed:
from BBC

'Striker Wayne Rooney is unlikely to make his comeback for England in
Thursday's World Cup game with Trinidad and Tobago, according to reports. It is
understood that the medical experts who said Rooney's foot bone had healed will
join England on Friday - so will not reassess him before the game.

They are thought to have warned the 20-year-old he risks a secondary injury if
he returns before he is match fit.

Coach Sven-Goran Eriksson is unlikely to risk playing him without clearance.

England know that victory over Trinidad and Tobago in Nuremberg will guarantee
their place in the second round of the tournament.

Rooney's club, Manchester United, made a statement after Rooney was passed fit
saying he would not be able to play until after the group stages of the World
Cup.

It appeared that Eriksson refused to accept this agreement, promising instead
to bring the independent medical experts to Germany to give Rooney the
once-over before he played.

That would seem to suggest that Rooney will not play at least until the final
Group B game against Sweden on 20 June.

Rooney has been training hard and is expected to play a full part in Tuesday's
session.

However, he has not played since breaking his foot against Chelsea on 29 April.

BBC Five Live Sport World Cup correspondent Jonathan Legard said Rooney's
eagerness to play was clear to all the England players.

"Rooney is difficult to hold back, according to Peter Crouch. He wants to play
all the time," said Legard.

"It's how Sven-Goran Eriksson handles this driven mentality - which is very
different to Michael Owen - which will decide England's World Cup prospects.

"Owen needs matches, Rooney needs matches and England need both players."

---------------------------------
[11] Telegraph - calm down Rooney
---------------------------------
Posted Tuesday, June 13, 2006 by ed:
'The two independent consultants who last week declared Wayne Rooney fit to
join Sven-Goran Eriksson's World Cup campaign rejected an appeal from England
to let him play against Trinidad and Tobago on Thursday.

The Daily Telegraph has learned that Professor Angus Wallace and Professor
Chris Moran, the two specialists from the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham
who had the final say on Rooney's broken foot scans last Wednesday, were asked
whether it would be possible to rush him back to play the game in Nuremberg.

They advised against it on the grounds that he would still not be match fit and
was at risk of further injury.

Eriksson and England appear to have accepted that advice and Wallace and Moran
will instead fly to the England team base in Baden Baden on Friday to check on
Rooney's fitness, with a view to him playing some part in the final Group B
match against Sweden next Tuesday.

The latest developments in the saga came as Football Association chief
executive Brian Barwick last night attempted to defuse the row with Manchester
United over Rooney.

In an exclusive interview with The Daily Telegraph, Barwick said peace had been
restored with Old Trafford after a furious row last week.

It also emerged yesterday that there are growing concerns inside the England
camp at Rooney's exuberance in training.

It is understood he has been told to calm down amid fears that in his
determination to prove his fitness, he could injure himself or his team-mates.
It is not clear if the FA's latest attempt to clear Rooney has won United's
blessing, but they are hoping a clean bill of health from Wallace and Moran
will persuade the club to drop their concerns.

United, in public at least, accept that it is ultimately a decision for the FA
but are examining their legal options in the event of Rooney being injured on
England duty.

United and the FA were involved in a stand-off after Eriksson indicated that he
was prepared to go against medical opinion and play Rooney before the knockout
stages. But Barwick insists a truce has been called and that the sides are
working together. He said: "I think it's important to say I have never had a
heated conversation with David Gill, ever.

"I find him one of life's genuine people, and a very easy person to talk to and
do business with. I'd like to think that he thinks the same of me, and we did
our bit to make sure there was a sensible dialogue.

"Manchester United and the Football Association have a very decent and
long-standing relationship. Period.

"My role last week involved keeping communication open with Manchester United
and David Gill, which I did. We had some constructive dialogue and now we move
forward."

Barwick refused to comment on the threat of legal action from United but added
he would not hesitate to take steps he believed were necessary to give England
their best chance of winning the World Cup.'

'Van Nistelrooy believes critical comments from Vieira in the Frenchman's book
and also those of Wenger portray the pair in a bad light.

"I don't care," continued van Nistelrooy in response to Vieira's aspersions.
"Obviously the incident that happened after the Man United - Arsenal match in
September 2003 has affected him.

"To talk about it three years later with so much aggression, that means he must
have been very frustrated. He can say what he wants - he's promoted his book
very well.

"I didn't understand why Arsene Wenger let himself down like that. Maybe he
wanted to put some doubt in my mind - some coaches are ready to do anything."

[7] Guardian on will he, won't he
---------------------------------
Posted Tuesday, June 13, 2006 by ed:
'The Wayne Rooney saga took another twist last night when it emerged that
Manchester United believe he will not play against Trinidad & Tobago on
Thursday. Sir Alex Ferguson's information is that the striker will be held
back, although the United manager is also aware that he may be in for a nasty
surprise.
United's medical staff have been in almost daily contact with the Football
Association and they have been told that there is no need for a delegation from
Old Trafford to travel to Germany yet. Sven-Goran Eriksson has promised that
the club doctor Tony Gill and an independent specialist, Prof Angus Wallace of
Nottingham's Queen's Medical Centre, will be welcomed into England's
headquarters as soon as it is believed Rooney may be fit enough to play. As a
courtesy the two men will be allowed to provide a second opinion, although
Eriksson has also made it clear he will not necessarily go along with their
recommendation.

As far as United are concerned, that invitation has not yet been issued and
preliminary discussions have been about the possibility of sending
representatives to Baden-Baden after Thursday.
Ferguson has taken this to mean Eriksson will not involve Rooney, although it
should not be definitively ruled out. Relations between the two managers are at
an all-time low and Eriksson in his current mood may think he has nothing to
lose. The Swede has shown a new side to his character in the past few weeks and
has been giving serious consideration to making Rooney a second-half substitute.

Rooney has already informed Eriksson that he regards himself as fit and ready,
although it also emerged last night that there have been misgivings in the
England camp that he may be exerting himself too strenuously in his desperation
to show off his condition in full-contact training.'

'Dutch striker Ruud van Nistelrooy has said there was not a problem between him
and his club Manchester United, despite looking set for the exit after falling
out with manager Sir Alex Ferguson. After losing his first-team place at Old
Trafford, and being banned by Ferguson from playing in former club captain Roy
Keane's testimonial against Celtic, van Nistelrooy was expected to be headed
for a lucrative move abroad.
But when asked about his current situation at United, the striker who scored
21 goals in the Premiership last season, second only to Arsenal's Thierry
Henry, insisted: "It's not a frustration or a problem.
"Things happen and that's it. After that you finish it and go on with other

from last Friday - what a tool

Conservative MP Greg Hands today called on British prime minister Tony Blair to
use his “long standing friendship” with Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson
to “lobby for (Wayne) Rooney’s inclusion”.

Hands even tabled a Commons motion condemning Ferguson for his “continuing
efforts to prevent” Rooney from playing for the England team, attacking what he
called the “shenanigans” over when the young striker will play.

The motion says: “This House condemns the shenanigans of Sir Alex Ferguson,
Manchester United manager and his continuing efforts to prevent Wayne Rooney
from playing for England in the World Cup and calls on the Prime Minister to
use his long-standing friendship with Sir Alex to lobby for Rooney’s inclusion
at the appropriate time.”

Mr Hands said of the Scottish manager: “It seems to me that Sir Alex is
motivated more by the interests of Manchester United.”
