[18] Times on Ronaldo
---------------------------------
Posted Wednesday, August 9, 2006 by ed:
'IT TOOK Cristiano Ronaldo almost half an hour to dare a step-over last night,
but in the moments that ensued it was difficult to tell who received the
loudest cheer: Eddie Anaclet, the Oxford United wing back, for taking the ball
off the Portugal winger, or Robert Duffy for heading in Andy Burgess’s cross at
the end of the move.
Either way, Ronaldo was given a taste of what he can expect this autumn. His
every stumble will be greeted with a glee usually reserved for another’s
triumph. He is England’s scapegoat for failing in the tournament; the price he
must pay will be terrace taunting until he proves it does not affect him or
crowds get bored.

When a chorus of boos greeted his re-emergence for the second half of last
night’s friendly at the Kassam Stadium, in his first appearance since the World
Cup finals, Ronaldo turned to team-mates and laughed. It was not a wink at
someone else’s misfortune, more a recognition of his place in English
football’s scheme of things. It was a sign that, at 21 and despite his
declarations of affection for Real Madrid, he may have the character to come
through. Two goals in a 4-1 win and a 72-minute run-out underlined the
impression.

Portugal’s win in the World Cup quarter-final was the occasion on which a
mistrust of Ronaldo’s flickering trickery turned to hatred. His initial
reaction to Wayne Rooney stamping on Ricardo Carvalho, when he rushed in to
make sure the referee had not missed the crime; the wink he offered to his
bench after his club-mate had been sent off. Take your pick over which irked
most.

His World Cup having lasted a week longer than England’s, Ronaldo’s return to
action had been correspondingly delayed. Sir Alex Ferguson kept his promise to
Jim Smith, his old friend now back in charge of Oxford, to bring back Ronaldo
and boost the Nationwide Conference club’s coffers. There was no police
presence amid the crowd of 11,463, even as a small proportion of the crowd
taunted the villain of the piece at every turn.

It was hardly a theatre of hate, though.

Rooney has seen red again since Germany. Yesterday, he and Paul Scholes, also
sent off against FC Porto in Amsterdam, were cleared to play in the opening
Barclays Premiership game, at home to Fulham on Sunday week, as the FA is still
to hear from its Dutch counterpart if they will be included in the referee’s
report.

Smith had said that his non-League players should go easy on United, even
suggesting as they competed to claim Ronaldo’s jersey afterwards that “it could
be an important shirt to have in the future, that. It’ll be like Hitler’s
helmet.”

The United winger, having already laid the ball off for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s
opener, had volleyed home a wonderful swerving shot from 18 yards. Only after
he had been engulfed by eight team-mates did he go to the touchline to receive
treatment. “The important thing was to get the World Cup players back,”
Ferguson, who also included Gabriel Heinze, Mikaël Silvestre and Louis Saha,
said. “Cristiano, in his first game back, took his goals well and I thought he
handled the whole thing very well.”

The cheers as United’s No 7 trooped off to be replaced by Giuseppe Rossi, after
rounding off the scoring, were matched by jeers. We wait to see which Rooney
offers, but Ronaldo’s rehabilitation clearly has begun.'

"I have not made a bid for Frank Ribery - I categorically deny that. I have not
made a bid for anybody. Will I? Frankly, I do not know. It depends if somebody
goes or not - but even if somebody goes, it is not sure I will make a bid for
anybody We have left an impressive list of players behind tonight. To add
players to the team to just be spectacular, I am not going to do."

Kolkata’s Mohun Bagan under-15 football team has been pitted against likes of
Manchester United, Athletic Club Bilbao of Spain and Brazilian club Sao Paulo
in Group A of the world finals of the Manchester United Premier Cup beginning
here Tuesday.

Hungarian team Ferencvarosi TC also competes in this group - one of the four in
which the 20 competing teams from around the world have been divided for the
tournament jointly hosted by Nike and Manchester United.

Matches will take place at Manchester United’s training facilities at
Carrington, while the final will be played at Old Trafford Friday.

Mohun Bagan Athletics Club is one of the four Asian club teams taking part. The
others are Beijing Sanfang FC of China, Tokyo Verdy of Japan and Ulsan Hyundai
FC of South Korea.

Some of the best known footballers spanning three generations gathered at the
famous Theatre of Dreams Monday night at Old Trafford for the opening ceremony
and draw.

Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand, Sir Bobby Charlton and Sir Alex Ferguson joined
Nike’s David Daley to welcome the rising stars for a tournament that has
involved more than 9,000 teams from five continents over the past 12 months.

Sir Alex of England spoke of the dedication and sacrifices needed to get to the
top while Sir Bobby, who earned 106 caps and netted a record 49 goals for
England, shared his view on the true meaning of sportsmanship to tumultuous
applause.

‘Respect each other. You must also respect the referee. You may not always
agree with the decisions he makes but he has a very difficult job to do,’ said
Sir Bobby.

‘Don’t try and cheat, don’t try and dive, if you are going to win please try to
do it properly. I think that is very important.’

Group B opened with Italian giants Inter-Milan and FC Brussels Molenbeek from
Belgium, followed by Mexican team Chivas Guadalajara, South African
representatives Orlando Pirates and Australia’s Bulleen Lions.

UK champions Arsenal feature in Group C and will face Hertha BSC from Germany,
Chilean club Universidad Catolica, Ohio Mutiny of the US and Ulsan Hyundai from
South Korea.

Portugal’s Boavista lead group D, and Switzerland’s FC Basel, Argentina’s
Atletic Club Lanus, Beijing Sanfang from China and Japan’s Tokyo Verdy 1969
complete it.

The draw:

Group A: Manchester United, Ferencvarosi TC, Athletic Club Bilbao, Sao Paulo FC
and Mohun Bagan Athletic Club

Group B: FC Internazionale Milano; FC Brussels Molenbeek, Chivas Guadalajara;
Orlando Pirates FC and Bulleen Lions

Group C: Arsenal; Hertha BSC Berlin, Universidad Catolica; Ohio FC Mutiny;
Ulsan Hyundai FC

Group D: Boavista FC; FC Basel; Club Atletico Lanus; Beijing Sanfang FC and
Tokyo Verdy 1969.

[15] Deal with Brondby?
---------------------------------
Posted Wednesday, August 9, 2006 by ed:
from SKY

'Manchester United are planning to arrange a co-operation deal with Danish side
Brondby.

The Premiership giants already have similar links in place with clubs around
the globe, with the most prominent being with Royal Antwerp in Belgium.

But it appears Brondby could become a leading feeder club for United after Sir
Alex Ferguson confirmed the proposal.

"We have clear plans to enter into a formal agreement with Brondby," Ferguson
told Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet.

"The club is doing a fantastic job in developing young talent and I'm sure that
a permanent arrangement will be something that both clubs will benefit from."

Brondby recently appointed Rene Meulensteen as their new coach, with the
Dutchman having been The Red Devils' reserve team boss.

Former United youngster Mark Howard has also signed for the club and Ferguson
confirmed he keeps in contact with Meulensteen.

He added: "Of course I follow what is happening in Denmark when Rene works
there.

"He is a fantastic coach who I had many good years with in Manchester."

Brondby director Anders Bjerregaard has revealed he is looking forward to the
opportunity to discuss the possibility of a partnership with United.

Bjerregaard said: "A conversation with Manchester United will be very
interesting. We must, of course, hear what they have to say.

"But in the long run, I am sure that an agreement will be of great benefit to
both partners.

"We can easily see ourselves taking the initiative and putting this enquiry to
Manchester United to get a formalised agreement in place."

[12] SUN loves a good panto villain
---------------------------------
Posted Wednesday, August 9, 2006 by ed:
they just won't let it go, below from the SUN, encouraging the masses or just
reporting it?

'CRISTIANO RONALDO stepped into a wall of hate as he made his first appearance
in England since the World Cup. The Portuguese winker scored a magnificent
double as Manchester United romped to victory at Conference side Oxford.

But the 11,463-capacity crowd was far from friendly and booed him from the
moment he turned up at the Kassam Stadium to the second he left.

There were taunts of “cheat” and “scum” as Ronaldo got off the team coach.

The winger had chewing gum thrown at him and one young fan tried to jump over
the security cordon to dish out some revenge of his own before being hauled
away.

This was Ronaldo’s first game on English soil following his part in the
sending-off of United team-mate Wayne Rooney in the World Cup quarter-finals.

And Old Trafford boss Alex Ferguson said: “He took his goals well. I thought he
handled the whole situation well and produced some great play at times.”

Rooney was red-carded in Gelsenkirchen for stamping on Ricardo Carvalho —
Ronaldo had stepped in to encourage the referee to dismiss him.

Ronaldo then winked at the Portugal bench after Roo had been given his marching
orders.

Rooney has made peace with The Winker but the reaction from many United fans
showed they have not forgiven the wideman for his antics in Germany.

Fergie left Ronaldo out of last weekend’s Amsterdam Tournament citing a lack of
fitness. And the United boss had been expected to rest Ronaldo again amid fears
stewards would not be able to cope if things turned ugly.

But with the Premiership kick-off less than two weeks away, Fergie had no
choice but to give his unpopular star an outing.'

[9] Rooney and Scholes free for Fulham
---------------------------------
Posted Wednesday, August 9, 2006 by ed:
from sportinglife

'Manchester United duo Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes will be free to face
Fulham on August 20, even though they still remain unsure whether they will
have to serve suspensions for their recent red cards in Amsterdam.

The pair were sent off during United's win over Porto on Friday night, yet four
days on the Football Association are still waiting to hear whether the
dismissals were reported to the Dutch FA.

With the Red Devils eager to get the matter cleared up before the season gets
underway, Soho Square chiefs will make contact with their Dutch counterparts
tomorrow to establish the situation.

However, as no punishment can be imposed until 14 days after the FA receive the
referee's report, both Rooney and Scholes are free to face Fulham in United's
Premiership opener and, in all probability, Charlton four days later.

Despite the delay, the most likely outcome remains that Rooney will
successfully appeal against an eventual violent conduct charge, reducing the
punishment for his foul on Pepe to a yellow card,

with Scholes set to serve a one-match ban if the same penalty applies to his
tackle from behind on Ricardo Quaresma due to him already being cautioned.'

[7] Goalie on his way?
---------------------------------
Posted Wednesday, August 9, 2006 by ed:
from PA

'Manchester United are on the brink of completing the signing of goalkeeper
Tomasz Kuszczak from West Brom.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has already had two bids for the Polish
international turned down this summer, mainly due to his refusal to allow
promising striker Giuseppe Rossi to join the Baggies on loan.

West Brom boss Bryan Robson admitted yesterday there was no chance of getting
Rossi as Ferguson wants the teenager to remain at Old Trafford now Ruud van
Nistelrooy has departed for Real Madrid.

However, in leaving Kuszczak out of West Brom's trip to Cardiff tonight
completely, it seemed obvious a deal was on the cards and it is understood a
'complicated' transfer will be concluded within the next 48 hours.

The deal should trigger the departure of Ben Foster, who started the friendly
with Oxford, to Watford for a second season on loan.

It is also anticipated a current member of the United squad - but not Rossi -
will move to The Hawthorns as part of the deal.'

---------------------------------
Posted Wednesday, August 9, 2006 by ed:
'Saha and Mikael Silvestre completed the full 90 minutes and Gabriel Heinze
lasted just short of an hour, while young midfielder David Jones also impressed.

So too did goalkeeper Ben Foster, although with West Brom's Tomasz Kuszczak set
to arrive at Old Trafford within the next 48 hours, Foster's next outing seems
certain to mark the start of a second season on loan at Watford.'

"You expect him to get booed at places like Liverpool and Manchester City but
to come here and hear that is a bit disrespectful really. Whatever happened at
the World Cup as regards Wayne Rooney has happened now. I think most
continental players would have done exactly the same thing. It wasn't his fault
Wayne Rooney got sent off. Overall, I thought Ronaldo was one of the
outstanding players at the World Cup and tonight, he showed everyone what a
quality player he is."

is why I kept them on for the full game."

---------------------------------
[2] PA Match Report
---------------------------------
Posted Wednesday, August 9, 2006 by ed:
Sir Alex Ferguson praised Cristiano Ronaldo for the way he handled his first
Manchester United outing since his World Cup controversies.

Ronaldo lasted 72 minutes of the 4-1 win over Oxford at the Kassam Stadium,
netting with two fine curling efforts either side of half-time.

Although he was booed every time he touched the ball by the home fans, the
Portugal winger did receive the wholehearted backing of the United supporters
and was able to raise a smile as he entered the pitch for the start of the
second half.

With no police inside the stadium and security beefed up as a result of United
heading south with a squad containing nine internationals rather than the
reserve team which was originally anticipated when the fixture was agreed
earlier in the summer, fears over Ronaldo's security - this evening at least -
appear to have been exaggerated.

If the reception he received tonight is any guide, the Portugal winger may
require a pair of ear plugs at some of the Premiership's more hostile venues
this season.

However, he also has the talent to win some of his critics round and he
succeeded in doing just that with his superb 14th-minute volley.

Teed up by Louis Saha's cushioned lay-off, Ronaldo produced an exquisite
right-foot finish, which started off wide of Billy Turley's far post before
curling in.

With no histrionics, and few of his trademark tricks, this was Ronaldo on his
best behaviour and he made his mark again after the interval, rifling a 20-yard
shot into the bottom corner after David Jones had provided the short pass.

He departed to a heroes' reception from the United support and a mixed one from
the Oxford fans, receiving handshakes from Ferguson and home boss Jim Smith
before taking his place in the dug-out, content at his positive contribution.

In fact, after the disasters which afflicted them in Amsterdam over the
weekend, it was a good night all round for the visitors.

Saha and Mikael Silvestre completed the full 90 minutes and Gabriel Heinze
lasted just short of an hour.'

'Four of United's World Cup players have been named in the squad to face Oxford
United on Tuesday night.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Gabriel Heinze, Louis Saha and Mikael Silvestre are all set
to make their first pre-season appearances since returning from Germany.

John O'Shea also returns after an injury scare sustained in the Reds'
triumphant LG Amsterdam Tournament campaign.

The more experienced players are accompanied to the Kassam Stadium by a healthy
number of younger players, including Academy striker Sean Evans.

United: Foster, Heaton, Simpson, Bardsley, Heinze, O'Shea, Silvestre,
Richardson, Miller, Fletcher, D Jones, R Jones, Martin, Ronaldo, Solskjaer,
