'Four United youngsters have joined Royal Antwerp on loan until January.

Darron Gibson, Danny Simpson, Jonny Evans and Fraizer Campbell have flown to
Belgium, and will spend the next four-and-a-half months learning their trade in
the Belgian second division.

All four players appeared for United’s first team during pre-season. Gibson,
Simpson and Evans were heavily involved in the Club’s South Africa tour, while
Campbell scored the winning goal against Macclesfield at Moss Rose.

Simpson is in his second spell at Antwerp, after spending five months with the
Belgians in the second half of last season.'

[9] Scholes in United mag

"I had a long time out and I'm glad to be back playing. It [pre-season] has
gone okay from a personal point of view and I'm just looking forward to
starting the season now. Fulham are an awkward team to play against as they
play good football. We've had some tough games against them over the years,
especially at Old Trafford, and there's no doubt it's going to be a tough
opening game. Hopefully we can get through it with a win."

"I think Fulham will have a go on Sunday because they've got a great philosophy
under Chris Coleman. They have good height in their team which could be a
problem for us. Their front two [McBride and Helguson] in particular are very
good headers of the ball so they have a threat goal-wise. But hopefully we'll
be ready."

the gym over the next three weeks to build up the quadriceps. He did very well
to get himself fit enough to take part in the World Cup after being out for so
long, but I think he stretched himself and the consequences are he's not fully
ready for us."

[6] Fergie on not kicking ball out
---------------------------------
Posted Saturday, August 19, 2006 by ed:
"It is a common sense decision because the situation had gone beyond being
abused, it was actually being turned into a form of cheating. I saw a situation
last week when a team was defending a free-kick, the ball was headed down, it
went to the attacking team and
immediately someone went down holding their head. The player in possession was
25 yards from goal and could have had a shot but the crowd started booing, so
he knocked the ball out for a throw-in. We should leave it to the referee to
decide whether the injury is
genuine or not. You can tell whether it is a serious head knock, or, in the
case of someone like Alan Smith, whether the injury is serious. If it is, you
stop the game but we had got to the situation where players were going down so
their team could recover their positions."

[3] Times on Hargreaves
---------------------------------
Posted Saturday, August 19, 2006 by ed:
MANCHESTER United’s hopes of signing Owen Hargreaves suffered a serious setback
yesterday with a robust “hands-off” warning from Bayern Munich, but Sir Alex
Ferguson and his board remain confident that the England midfield player will
arrive at Old Trafford next week in a £17 million deal. In a statement on their
official website, Bayern claimed to have “unequivocally” informed United that
Hargreaves is not for sale, adding that the England midfield player must see
out the remaining four years of his contract. The German club also said that
there will be “no future talks” on the matter, but, despite an apparent
breakdown in direct communication between the clubs, United continued to
investigate the matter yesterday through a third party.

Nor, it emerged last night from within Old Trafford, has Ferguson given up on
signing a centre forward before the transfer window closes on August 31.
Fernando Torres, of Atlético Madrid, remains a target, although many obstacles
will have to be overcome for that deal to take place.

Hargreaves, at least, is within United’s sights and, contrary to Bayern’s
statement, a meeting had been planned between officials from the clubs in
Munich on Sunday. It is uncertain whether that meeting will take place, but,
having been encouraged to believe on Thursday that an agreement was close on a
£17 million fee, United believe that the deal has developed an almost
unstoppable momentum, with Hargreaves having made clear his desire to move to
Manchester.

Bayern’s statement yesterday was echoed by strong words from Karl-Heinz
Rummenigge, the chairman, and Uli Hönness, the general manager. “We are not
even prepared to talk to any other club about releasing Hargreaves early from
his contract,” Rummenigge said. Hönness said that “you can offer €50 million
(about £34 million) for Owen Hargreaves but we will not let him go”.

Ferguson, whose team take on Fulham at Old Trafford in their opening Barclays
Premiership match tomorrow lunchtime, had sounded cautiously optimistic about
his chances of signing the 25-year-old. “We have been trying to negotiate with
Bayern Munich for a while now and the boy has said he would like to join United
and we’d like to have him here,” the manager said.“It is in [chief executive]
David Gill’s capable hands. We are dealing with a big club in Bayern Munich,
but hopefully we can get something done.”

Ferguson, having shown no more than passing interest in Hargreaves in the past,
said that he had been attracted by the player’s newfound “maturity” over the
past 12 months, when he has emerged as a fundamental player for England as well
as Bayern. For now, though, with Michael Carrick injured and Tomasz Kuszczak
merely a reserve goalkeeper, United will take on Fulham without any new faces
in their starting line-up.

It is a situation that is troubling many supporters — particularly given the
sale of Ruud van Nistelrooy to Real Madrid — but apparently not Ferguson. “I
would have liked to have got a striker in, but there’s no one out there,” the
manager said.

The one contender is Torres, the subject of a firm inquiry three weeks ago, but
completing that transfer seems improbable before the transfer window closes.

Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes will serve a three-game suspension after
tomorrow’s game, a situation that has angered United after the FA rejected
appeals against their red cards in the LG Amsterdam Tournament. “I’m not so
much disappointed as surprised,” Ferguson said. “The FA told us nothing was
going to happen to Wayne. I do not know what has happened in between them
telling us that and reaching the decision.”

[2] Over for Senna
---------------------------------
Posted Friday, August 18, 2006 by ed:
from SKY

'Villarreal have stated that Marcos Senna will not be joining Manchester United
as the Spanish side have lost patience with The Red Devils' after their lengthy
pursuit of the World Cup midfielder.

United had been chasing the 30-year-old for a large portion of the summer but
never managed to close a deal, and now the Yellow Submarines have ended
negotiations with Sir Alex Ferguson's side.

The Premiership outfit were given until the end of Friday to tie up a deal but
with chief executive David Gill firmly engaged in their attempts to bring
England international Owen Hargrevaes to Old Trafford it seems they have
finally missed out on Senna's signature.

The Brazilian born midfielder would have been allowed to leave the Spanish side
should a suitable offer have been tabled, but with no such bid forthcoming
Villarreal president Fernando Roig has drawn an end to the prolonged
negotiations.

Whilst confirming he had lost patience with United and that Senna would now
stay at the club, the Villarreal supremo criticised the English giants for
dragging their heels over a deal.

"They've turned his head without bringing the matter to any conclusion," said
Roig.

"It isn't good for the relations between the clubs because people should behave
in a more correct manner.

"We waited until yesterday for them to finalise the conditions of the move. The
player can wait longer but we can't and the case is now closed.

"He will stay and we will have to see if he renews his contract or not."

develop in the coming days. I have a game this weekend and I'm a Munich player
for the moment. But to have the opportunity to represent a club like Man United
would be great for me, there's no doubt about that. Any player would be
honoured."

[49] Bayern statement

Posted Friday, August 18, 2006 by ed:
'The FC Bayern Munich AG board of directors wishes to release the following
statement regarding a number of news stories and public statements in recent
days concerning England international Owen Hargreaves:

Bayern Munich has clearly informed its player Owen Hargreaves and his agent
that the existing contract employing him at the club until 30 June 2010 will
remain in force;

Up to and including today, Bayern Munich has not held negotiations with
Manchester United or with any other club. Furthermore, Bayern Munich does not
intend entering transfer negotiations regarding Owen Hargreaves;

Bayern Munich has today, Friday 18 August 2006, officially requested Manchester
United to cease pursuing its interest in Owen Hargreaves.

"Owen Hargreaves is an important player for FC Bayern Munich. Our plans for the
future are based on him and other young international players, so we are not
even prepared to talk to any other club about releasing Hargreaves early from
his contract," Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge commented.'

[46] FA lied to United, again?

Posted Friday, August 18, 2006 by ed:
Fergie on Rooney

"I am not so much disappointed as surprised. The FA told us nothing was going
to happen to Wayne and they were actually briefing people the same thing. I do
not know what has happened in between them telling us that and reaching the
decision. We are disappointed but we just have to get on with it. That is the
nature of our club. In these situations it is down to the referee. You hope
commonsense is going to prevail. Instead he has reported it, then it has gone
through the official channels and the FA have decided to take it up. We have
the players to cover and there is nothing we can do about it now but one thing
is for sure, we will not be playing in the Amsterdam tournament again, you can
bet your life on that."

[45] Guardian on 'ticket' system
---------------------------------
Posted Friday, August 18, 2006 by ed:
'Football supporters are crying foul over an online scheme launching today that
enables Premiership club season ticket holders to resell unwanted match tickets
to fellow fans. Supporters claim the 25% premium charged for the service is
"disgusting" and "legalised touting".

The company, Viagogo, has secured deals with Manchester United and Chelsea and
wants to sign up other Premiership sides. It is the brainchild of Eric Baker,
who started a similar business called StubHub in America. The company has
financial backing from Lastminute co-founder Brent Hoberman and venture capital
group Index Ventures, an early investor in online success stories Skype and
Betfair.

A spokesman for Manchester United Supporters Trust said: "There is an unwritten
rule among our fans: you only sell on a ticket to another Red at face value,
otherwise you're considered a tout and frowned upon."

Viagogo pointed out that the unauthorised reselling of tickets, although
widespread, is illegal. "We are bringing efficiency and transparency to what
has traditionally been a murky marketplace," a spokesman said.

Through Viagogo, Manchester United and Chelsea season ticket holders will be
able to sell legally unwanted match tickets to One United and True Blue club
members, all of whom must be registered. This avoids breaching anti-hooligan
laws.

Manchester United and Chelsea will benefit from the deal as Viagogo has signed
up as a sponsor to both clubs, promising an undisclosed six-figure sum each
year.

Supporters' groups said they had long been calling for clubs to offer regulated
reselling services, but believe they should be free. David Johnstone, editor of
fanzine CFCUK, said: "If you walk down the Fulham Road on a Saturday Chelsea
have been bending over backwards to help police crack down on touting. Now
they're at it themselves."

Mr Baker defended the 25% premium charged. "There are a lot of technical
developments and ongoing costs which have to be covered. It's a service that
really needs to be provided through an outsourced venture.'
