Great! It's reproducible on another machine. 

Now, if Otto is good, he modifies the short assembler code of stage1
and inserts a debug string to confirm that stage1 fails at the end
of copy_buffer where it executes the loaded stage2.

Stage1 starts with "GRUB " and certain error conditions given, it
prints only a very few and short error messages. If it doesn't print
an error message, it has loaded and jumped into stage2 either with
LBA or CHS geometry.
