Not really an answer to your question.. but I'ld just like to
assure people out there that the other motorola modem (VoiceSURFR 56k
internal) does work amazingly well with linux after a bit of playing arround
(no option to disable PnP, but for some reason I can make it work fine by
simply adding a "setserial" command into a /etc/rc.d/rc.serial file).

I'm a bit supprised that the ModemSURFR doesn't work to be honest..
from the specs it would appear to be nearlly identical but with a few
features removed, the fundamental specs seem to match quiet closely tho...

I've never set up an external modem... but I'm guessing that its
simmilar to setting up an internal.. and if thats the case then maybe u
could try doing what I did with the /etc/rc.d/rc.serial file.. I grabbed
the values that the modem was starting with by using a combination of win95
and a updated bios from abit (which shows PnP values at system startup
time). Oh, theres a paramater that u're supposed to add for the 56k version
too, somic like vis_hi or somic.. tho I guess with the amount of e-mails
u've submitted to this list that u prolly know it :)

Well.. I guess if u've not tried it already it might be worth a
shot, and if things look like they're progressing then I'll try and give u
more details on the subject...

        hope that helps a bit..
