I had the same problem with my USR Sporster - that's one of the reasons that
I replaced it.  Many of the USR Sporsters had a ROM version with an error in
it.  It would have been a real mess to send the modem back to the factory to
get the ROM replaced so I ended up using the fix published for it on the USR
web site --> set register S12=0 in the initialization string.

Actually that is one of the reasons that I like the Motorola modem - besides
making better connections than the USR over my phone line (with fewer
components on the board), I have updated the EPROM twice by downloading the
new EPROM data from the Motorola web site (unfortunately the EPROM update
runs under WIN95).

I have never had any problems the Motorola (and my 2 year old PCI PNP
motherboard), that were not cured by common sense and the setserial command.
