How pray tell do you show respect when the original author is dead and can't
give anyone permission to work with his creations? Seems like by writing a
pastiche without encouragement or permission to do it you are insulting the
author...
I dont agree. The new author should know that he/she is not writing canonical literature. Only decamp/carter tried to mess with Howards original writings as far as i know. The author knows whether or not he is doing it in praise of howards work or not. As for insulting Howard by writing new stories about his character (which are not generally confused with the canonical writings anyway by most fans of howard) imitation is often seen as the highest form of flattery.
