That's exactly what we are referring to when we say "pastiches".
What did you think we were meaning?

Actually, I find Howard's few attempts to write in a Lovecraftian vein
to be among his weaker efforts. It just wasn't his style.
Why write stories set in Howard's worlds?
1. Because you like and respect the original author and wish to
honor him.
2. Because if you set your character in Conan's world, it will sell
better than creating a world of your own.
I've seen lots and lots of #2 and very little of #1.
