I've seen lots and lots of #2 and very little of #1.



My guess is that most are a combination of one and two with a few other reasons thrown in such as perhaps it is merely fun to write a conan story.  Im not sure that there is much reason to be too cynical about #2 so long as they respect Howard as well.  After all writers have to pay their bills as well!:)
