Thanks for your suggestion, amcluesent.

I had a look at the J. River website, and it appears that their media
center is a real jack of all trades. To be honest, it looks like a lot
more than what I'm after, as it handles much more than audio (photos,
video, etc). I'm usually a bit leery of multipurpose software, as its
often difficult to 'get it all right', as there are more features to
focus on, and often one area of the application will shine at the
expense of another. Media Center does appear to have good iPod support
though, so perhaps I'd be able to stop using iTunes, which would be a
huge bonus. Also, if/when my nano dies, I'm not sure I'll buy another
one, as there are lots of mp3 players around, and they're getting
better and cheaper all the time, so having iTunes around just to
support a specific player looks like short-term thing.

The flac support is important, and it appears to be able to convert
between formats (flac/wav/mp3). I've just started using dbpoweramp
which allows me to do this from an explorer window, which I find pretty
handy.

Thanks again for the advice, amcluesent. I'm not going to make any
snap decisions, and unfortunately, I don't have the time to test drive
all the potential solutions, but I'll certainly keep Media Center in
contention.
