Okay, I have been testing this out, modifying my FLAC tags in MP3tag.
I now have added both a COMPILATION field and ALBUMARTIST field [no
space] into my tags in my pilot group.

1. If you use COMPILATION=1, SC will treat as compilation. For FLAC
files, only one of the choices matters in the Compilations section on
the Settings/Music Library tab:
- if you select "List compilation albums under each artist", when you
browse by Artist the list will include all artists on the album. The
Artist list will also include "Various Artists" for this album
- if you select "Group compilation albums together", when you browse by
artist the list will only include "Various Artists"
With either choice, browse by Album will show one album by Various
Artists -UNLESS you also have an ALBUMARTIST tag, in which case browse
by Album will show the one Album by that Artist.

2. If you us ALBUMARTIST tags, I don't think there is any need at all
to use the COMPILATION tag. Again, for FLAC files, only one of the
choices matters in the Compilations section on the Settings/Music
Library tab:
- if you select "List compilation albums under each artist", when you
browse by Artist the list will include all artists on the album. The
Artist list will also include the ALBUMARTIST for this album
- if you select "Group compilation albums together", when you browse by
Artist the list will only include the ALBUMARTIST - UNLESS you also have
a COMPILATION=1 tage, in which case the browse by Artist list will not
include the ALBUMARTIST, but instead will include "Various Artists"

As you can see above, it is allowable to have both the COMPILATION=1
and ALBUMARTIST, but I'm not sure I can think of a reason to do that.
I would guess that the only people who would use the COMPILATION tag
would be those who do not want to go thru the hassle of creating
ALBUMARTIST tags. I'm not sure, but I believe that when you use
COMPILATION=1 you may have to have all the tracks in the same folder
(not necessarily a dedicated folder -if these are 15 tracks out of a
folder of 1,000 I think it still works fine)

The ALBUMARTIST route would seem the easier solution for those of us
that have this tag, or something close, already captured. Several
programs have an ALBUM ARTIST tag [with space], but it was easy to
create an ALBUMARTIST tag from that in MP3Tag (at least it was easy for
100 files, I may be singing a different tune when we tackle the big
job). If we can get the developers to support the Bug Fix that allows
SC to read ALBUM ARTIST tags as ALBUMARTIST, that would pretty well
clinch it for a lot of us.

If you set the ALBUMARTIST to "Various", you will get just what you
want for the compilation. But you have added flexibility as well - for
an album like Dirty Dancing, I set ALBUMARTIST to "Soundtrack", but it
gets handled like any other compilation.

I think that this post confirms the accuracy of the good advice I
received from many of the forum contributors. I wanted to share the
results of applying your advice, and thought maybe putting this all
into one post would be helpful to others trying to figure out this same
issue.

Finally - understanding that support for SC must be awfully
challenging, it would be tremendously helpful if we could get someone
to update the Supported Tags document on the WIKI, which still does not
mention ALBUMARTIST [and others]. It will need to be an "insider" who
can update fully, not a piecemeal effort that occasionally adds a
supported tag that we stumble across. If someone can tell me the
appropriate channel of communication, I would contact those that could
make this happen.

Thanks again to all - I've learned some things and solved my SC issues,
all because of your help.
