I have an old iPod 3G ("Classic", 30 Gb type) mainly for car use, so I
need some compatibility. The iPod works happily without iTunes, but it
doesn't support any advanced tags, I think. No Album Artists, no
multiple artists, no compilation tags etc.
So when I ran accross the Various Artist taggng and saw them as
multiple artists on my iPod, I thought how often do I use a VA album to
the iPod? I could live with it or retag them with MP3tag before sending
them to my iPod.
But since I learned tagging with multple artist fields there are quite
a few albums with 2 featured artists which I like to see apart in Browse
by artist on SC.
So there are more and more albums which won't look good on my iPod.
Maybe in time the iPod will be replaced by a newer one but only if the
old one breaks.
So if I want to maintain full compatibility with my old iPod I cannot
use any advanced (modern) tagging for SC. But that is also not an option
for me.
I heard there is an alternative firmware for the iPod, "Rockbox". I
will take a look at it. It adds many features to old iPod's as being
able to play Flac, and I hope also modern tagging.
I use ID3v2.3 for MP3's and not for 2.4 for compatibility reasons.

This is new information for me. If I setup SC to use "&" as separator
character, I probably can use that for many "multi artists" albums.
I will take a look where I can find that setting.
Thanks for that tip!
But is there a difference for SC between these 2 tagging examples?
1
Album Artist: Page & Plant
Artist: Page
Artist: Plant
Compilation=0
or
2
Artist 1: Page & Plant
Artist 2: Page
Artist 3: Plant
Album Artist: <Blank>
Compilation=0
I want to see them as 3 artists in SC so I use comp-0 to force that.
In SC there seems to be no difference in how they show up.
In example 2, on the iPod I see "Page & PlantPagePlant", but at least
it begins with "Page & Plant"
In example2 I see "PagePlant" and the Album Artist is ignored.
So does it make a difference for SC if I tag as Example 1 or 2? Do I
overlook something?
