Checking in as someone who prefers macports.  I'd guess that the dominance
of homebrew and .pkg in the node community is partly because the first
mention of OS X on the node homepage points to the .pkg installer and the
top hit for 'install node mac' uses homebrew, and partly that node and
homebrew both went through their 'cool&new' phase at around the same time.
