BTW Ed, the Pennsy did use third rail, rather extensively on subsidiary lines - mainly for freight operations and not generally on what we think of as "main lines". Howie Waelder used to regale listeners with stories of bridging third rails to stalled electric units on cross overs using wood and cable "tools" on rainy nights. I'll never really know what was more entertaining, the story or watching Howie tell it... God bless him...
