Ed Loizeaux hit me with a comment when I put on a clinic of dual gauge
turnouts long ago in Bakersfield, CA. He made the point that if the
track gauge is at minimum, the wheels are snug against the points and
the opposite side is snug against the stock rail, so you only need a
tiny bit more than the clearance of a normal flangeway. Attached
photo is what I use... Of course, the sharper the turnout and the
longer the loco’s rigid wheelbase, the wider the space needs to be.
The photo is of number 8 turnouts, approximately. I run 2-10-2 and
2-10-4 locos through these.

The flangeway gap? You'll need pe-lenty in order to avoid shorts
across the points with a solid brass throw bar.
