I believe that my first train set, the 302 Atlantic (smoke in boiler
w/choochoo) with B&O box, log carrying flat car and illuminated caboose came
from Macy's in 1949 or 50. This is the legend anyway.

My second set was a Super Chief in 1956 with 470/471/473 and 4 cars (no
plain coach, all first class!) My mother bought it in Hoenig's in the Bronx.
I still have the catalog that was included. It has a yellow Hoenig's
sticker on the cover. Mom hiked up there on the subway and lugged that
sizeable box back home to Brooklyn. Why? Price baby! Mom went through my
catalogs then compared with the newspaper ads and found the deal!

My wife, on the other hand, simply called Ron Bashista and ordered a
complete Superliner, with all the extra cars and a second powered diesel and
had it delivered UPS to her job. No discount, no hike.

Either way, the women in my life have treated me to some exceptional trains.
