Actually, I have absolutely no environment variables settings apart from the defaults, no .profile, no special .bashrc (and even that isn't sourced since I didn't setup a .profile). I just wgot the sage-4.0.2 tar, the md5sum matches exactly, then untarred, ran make (and ran make twice later to try if that fixed it) and it didn't work.
