Sorry about that.

Actually, I have absolutely no environment variables settings apart
from the defaults, no .profile, no special .bashrc (and even that isn't
sourced since I didn't setup a .profile).

I just wgot the sage-4.0.2 tar, the md5sum matches exactly, then
untarred, ran make (and ran make twice later to try if that fixed it)
and it didn't work.

Anyway, here is a little more information from
/Users/Prabhu/build/sage-4.0.2/install.log:

Now building maxima; this takes a few minutes
Since we're using OS X and there is a very weird
bug with buffered output while building maxima,
you will not be able to see the output of the build
as it occurs. Don't worry, the build process did
not hang.

sage: An error occurred while installing maxima-5.16.3.p2
Please email sage-devel http://groups.google.com/group/sage-devel
explaining the problem and send the relevant part of
of /Users/Prabhu/build/sage-4.0.2/install.log. Describe your computer,
operating system, etc.
If you want to try to fix the problem, yourself *don't* just cd to
/Users/Prabhu/build/sage-4.0.2/spkg/build/maxima-5.16.3.p2 and type 'make'.
Instead type "/Users/Prabhu/build/sage-4.0.2/sage -sh"
in order to set all environment variables correctly, then cd to
/Users/Prabhu/build/sage-4.0.2/spkg/build/maxima-5.16.3.p2
(When you are done debugging, you can type "exit" to leave the
subshell.)
make[1]: *** [installed/maxima-5.16.3.p2] Error 1

-----------------
Digging further from spkg/build/maxima*, error.log has this:
$ cat error.log
An error occurred during initialization:
NIL is not of type (OR FILE-STREAM STRING PATHNAME)..
make[3]: *** [binary-ecl/maxima] Error 1
make[2]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1

I could run the spkg-install again and give you the results after a
little while.

Indeed, that would work but I think I'd like to sort the above out first.

Thanks.
cheers,
