[313] DJ No Show - (Exclusive at Turnmills this Saturday night)

2002-04-13 Thread Michael D Tyrer
what was *this*
 little slur all about:

In the end, Mr. Craig and Mr. Saunderson arrived for their gigs
(miracle of miracles! Detroit followers will know what I am talking
about), with Carl spending the night -- in bed -- and Saunderson
kicking it in the Shelter office.

I am sure that there have been a numbers of DJs who over the years at some
stage or other developed a reputation as no shows. I was never too fond of
Cave Dark, whom my m8s are obsessed about, and had him in this boat when on
about 3 consecutive occasions he failed to turn up. By the 3rd time, I knew
something was amiss and lo and behold a little bit of research showed me
that on 2 of the occasions he was never booked... the venue - well,
you'll be surprised: the infamous, Turnmills, which I more or less finally
gave up going to about a year ago when I got all geed up to go see the same
Mr Craig - who also 'failed to show' but surprise, surprise it
transpires he too was never booked. You will no doubt recollect that a
certain Mr R Hawtin (apparently for the first time in his life) walked out
of there some 30 minutes after arriving to start his set, because (if i
remember rightly) of the lack of contracted equipment.
Now should I be surprised, having shaken hands, agreed terms, that I had a
regular Thursday night there to promote my own weekly night back in 96 I
went away to get flyers printed and start my mail outs. I was to go back to
Turnmills on the Monday afternoon to sign a contract, but before i get mr
newman's call, i get a call from one of my m8s to tell me Eurobeat 2000 have
just signed to go back there on Thursday nights ... and the attitude : so
what we dont need u - 2 4-king true!

Enjoy your weekends 313ers ... i;m off to Fuse Club Saturday night to hear,
for the first time in about 5 years, Claude Young and I cant wait. Made the
big mistake of going to Fabric to hear Laurent Garnier, the other week for a
friends birthday ... a load of peeps I know headed to Fabric and came back
raving about Claude should I be surprised? And what a lovely guy to go
with it. I remember someone in their @bout the members post which was
hugely popular a few months ago - saying their favourite thing about techno
was claude's generosity!!
I hope he dont think he's buying drinks for everyone in the Fuse club
..!!

Enjoy your weekend good people

2002-04-13 Thread yussel
actually, i was just at the press conference and none of the 'missing' djs
were mentioned at all. i suspect pcm was a little pre-mature in posting
names that they didn't have locked-down. typical sketchyness.

they are i guess SELLING press passes this time around. $30...what do
 people think about this?

I think its completely hillarious that it's the all EXCESS pass. If it's a
spelling error, it's a brilliant SNAFU, if it's not, it's twice as funny. I
have a screen grab of the page in case they fix it. For now at least, see it
here: http://www.electronicmusicfest.com/vip/ I don't think it's a typo
since they say it offers excessive opportunities for entertainment, but
that just cracks me up.

Not trying to slag the festival. My allegiances are torn from last year and
the good the festival does for the city, but ultimately, I'm selfish and
happy to be able to join for the festivities. I think the schedule is great
if it stays as-is, and if not, I'm sure the parties will be the highlight
like last year.

I'm pretty floored that Sundiata is playing there at all! Unless there's a
DJ that has snatched his name, Sundiata is a great African music
performer.
I've seen him and his troop numerous times in my life and I've always
walked
 away with a smile.

I don't think it's that surprising given the Chicago representation and the
Ron Trent Chicago/Detroit connection. He put out a 2x12 on Prescription
with Ron Trent and has collaborated with him a few times if I'm not
mistaken. Great choice though!

the biggest disappointment to me is that there doesnt seem to be much live
stuff this year. they said in that detroit news article that they wanted
to
keep people dancing all day this time, i guess they assume dj's are better
at this...personally i just think daylight keeps people from dancing as
much...and i really like checking out live stuff during the day, nice
 atmosphere and mood, to me..

In general, I'd agree, with people nursing hangovers and all, but the first
year @ CPOP was an exception to that rule and then some. Phew! Theo Parrish
still has me on a different plain two years later.

[313] DEMF: the mysterious schedule

2002-04-13 Thread Fred Heutte
I am pleased enough overall with the artist lineup ... and glad that
Dwayne Jensen and Gary Martin are going to get some overdue recognition.
Steve Rachmad, Dave Angel -- excellent. And I'm really happy that Art
Payne, who is truly one of the founders of the dance music scene in
Detroit, will finally get a spot.

The schedule is something of a mystery, though. In addition to all the
disappearing acts -- Drexciya, Rob Hood, etc. -- I just don't understand
the logic at times.

Some is just typos -- they have DJ Drama (hah, if you have a name like
that you get grief you deserve :) and Tim Baker both at 10 pm at CPOP
on Saturday. There are big gaps in the Motor stage Sunday schedule --
is that because of some of the withdrawals?

And how about this: Roy Davis Jnr, Green Velvet and AO -- at 12, 2 and
3:30 on Monday??! And I presume the Advent isn't going to be on for
four hours Monday evening.

I can't help but think that there *was* an organized effort to protest
PCM's management and have a coordinated withdrawal. But this also puts
really good people on the selection committee in a tough spot.

There are still a few DJs and producers that ought to get a DEMF invite,
if not this year then next, including Reggie Dokes, Damon Wild and Steve
Stoll (just off the top of my head). I also think an invite to DJ Pierre
in the Hall of Fame category is well overdue.

There also seems to be very little UR/Submerge presence in the lineup
this year. Certainly that is something to be concerned about.

Fred

i have a charles siegling MP3 set here ...from i think Plus (China) 2001
courtesy of a dutch list member which is 81Mb.

I just tried to Zip the file up and it came back bigger that it started.
so can anyone tell me whether MP3 files can be ZIP'd and their approximate
ratio - this was 1%? I dont normally use WinZip .. only to extract

Remember you need to receive this file through an overnight free connection
or an ASDL or work connection. On at 56k modem, it will take all week and
skint you...

Of course, if any member can suggest a more efficient method of my mailing
this file I'd be glad to hear.

4 wot its worth, im just playing the set now for the first time myself, and
i;m rocking in my chair - he's pumping along at a good 140 bpm - fairly

[313] demf contracting policy

2002-04-13 Thread laura gavoor
It has been demf policy, now 3 years running, to anounce artists' names for
their line-up without any contracts or monies having exchanged hands.

Kevin called me earlier to ask if I knew about his being listed on the
line-up. I sent him to the website to confirm that as I'd been too busy to
yet check it out. He was lit up about the liberty taken and as little as
the day before, had not even received a phone call to see if he would be
interested/available. Cheek indeed!!

No one I know is contracted, yet they feel compelled to announce to the
world a line-up with no formalities/legalities in place. I know the
committee was put in place just to SELECT the talent...not book it. So it
is now apparent...PCM feels they can get away with what no other
PROFESSIONAL promoter or promotion company in the world does--EVER.

All I can say is that the very same lameass reason given for Carl's
dismissal last year is again present this year. Wonder who'll get the blame
this year?

two words...private parties :]

Bringing in the RePHLeX all-stars would have just been sick though...

Like Bogdan, Cylob and Aphex on a rotating stage.

Besides, didn't you catch Aphex when he came to Pontiac in '96?

Well, I just saw Aphex a few weeks ago at All Tomorrow's Parties, and
at this stage, he just lies down at the front of the stage and plays
some old Drum'n'Bass records and tosses out some Aphex madness from his
laptop, and that's what passes for Aphex Twin live. He doesn't really
do anything that could be considered Detroit-influenced, in the same
way that, say, Autechre could be considered to have been Detroit-influenced
(witness Sean's often-worn 69 t-shirt, for example). So, in that regard,
Aphex wouldn't be all that appropriate. (Ultimately, I'd have to say that
having Kraftwerk close down the main stage at the very end of the Festival
would be the ultimate Now-I-can-die-happy moment for me. Can't Mad Mike
and Rolando ring them up and beg them? :-) )

Of course, an interesting semantics argument could be made - is this the
Detroit Electronic Music Festival as in, a festival of electronic music
held in Detroit? If so, then anything goes - from all over the world,
in any electronic music style. But instead, it's not really the case -
it's a Festival of Detroit (and Detroit-influenced) Electronic Music.
In that case, asking, say, Plaid to play and do old Black Dog tracks might
be more appropriate :-)

As for the RePLHeX all-stars, immediately after DEMF the RePHLeX
Braindance Coincidence Tour is hitting LA, and presumably other US cities:

DMX Krew (live PA)
Bogdan Raczynski (live PA)
Ovuca (live PA)

Re: [313] demf contracting policy

2002-04-13 Thread yussel
hear hear!!!

me and laura can now bond against a common enemy!!!

what i find really amusing is watching the responses from the public go
OMG! OMG! Kevin Saunderson, Roni Size, Rob Hood!!!

The most popular DJs are the ones that have been pulled.

Its almost as if PCM is begging eveyone to hate them.

Lets not get all Freud, but is it possible that Carol Marvin subconciously
wants the festival to fail so she can get away from her own monster.

Or...is she fairly certain that given her appalling handling of the
festival, there is no way that the city will renew her contract. We
already know she's malicious. but is she evil enough to try to destroy
'her' festival before it is handed over to others?

More conspiracy theories at 11.

On Sat, 13 Apr 2002, laura gavoor wrote:

Wonder who'll get the blame
 this year?

 two words...private parties :]

i have a charles siegling MP3 set here ...from i think Plus (China) 2001
courtesy of a dutch list member which is 81Mb.

I just tried to Zip the file up and it came back bigger that it
started.
so can anyone tell me whether MP3 files can be ZIP'd and their approximate
ratio - this was 1%? I dont normally use WinZip .. only to
extract

Remember you need to receive this file through an overnight free
connection
or an ASDL or work connection. On at 56k modem, it will take all week and
 skint you...

Of course, if any member can suggest a more efficient method of my mailing
this file I'd be glad to hear.

You could use Winrar and split it up into smaller files of your choice (10 -
8MB files, 40 - 2MB files...). Plus, I think it does better compression
ratios too.

Of course, an interesting semantics argument could be made - is this the
Detroit Electronic Music Festival as in, a festival of electronic music
held in Detroit? If so, then anything goes - from all over the world,
in any electronic music style.

that's the way I've always read the title ... doesn't the other way
keep Detroit techno provincial to some degree?

I think there's a balance that needs to be struck between the two.

don't want to hear what they say. We can all make up our own minds about
 the posts people make.

Also, to add something substantial here, I'd be quite content to listen to

all the great music of the past if in the present there was nothing
worthwhile being created. The value of the new is precisely that it has
 an
essential difference with the past, and reflects a reality that did not
exist in the past. Simply repackagin something does not make it new.
Fashion is objective in that it reflects the objective historical changes
 in
our society; but the constant craving for what appears to be new when it
 is
only a rehashing of what already is, simply reflects the capitalistic
 drive
to stimulate consumer demand in order to continue to make a profit.

Re: [313] demf contracting policy

2002-04-13 Thread Fred Heutte
Don't forget, there *are* worse possibilities than Carol Marvin running
the DEMF.

I think it is important to remember that, regardless of the lineup, and
fully respecting the decision of each featured artist to perform or to
decline, those of us who attend the festival are there because it is
about the Detroit Electronic Music Festival, and not about Carol Marvin.

The fact that it *is* about the Festival in such a strong way is, in my
mind, a continuing tribute to the vision and the focus that Carl Craig
had. So that's just where I stand.

I also think it's important to give full consideration to all the
available facts when assessing the job that Carol Marvin is doing, or
anyone else involved. If she were here giving her side of all the
controversies, maybe we would be more inclined to support her. And
maybe not.

But she's not here, so the fairest approach is to take all the available
info into account instead of just leaping to conclusions. For example,
it should be acknowledged that she recruited an excellent panel to
put together the lineup.

there enough other artists who could play there? Not that i don't

I second that, and i just heard the same bullshit talking to a friend
yesterday, that Archer doesnt cut it. The last release they did for us came
out about as thick and nice as european vinyl (~equivalent to delsin vinyl)
- quite a surprise as we just paid for normal weight vinyl. Normally we get
thinner vinyl from them, but again, it always sounds fine. additionally they
do beautiful colors cheap. ;) additionally they are as professional and nice
as it gets. if you have good mastering then your records should come out
excellent from archer.

moreover, i have heard plenty of records done on expensive 180 gram european
vinyl that come out noisy and crackly as hell...so dont believe all the
hype.

Re: [313] The committee vs. Carl Craig

2002-04-13 Thread xx xx

I do not think, you can act, deal the same way with one person and a group
of persons, common sense when dealing with a group of persons, Adopt
consensus, to move foward.

Can one person can be in conflict with him/herself ?

I assume stipulating that everybody will play as a prelude avoid conflict
and create an environment in which disagreements are over, focus on the main
part, proposals stronger, frustrations flew away, more chance to reach the
goal!
There is no right decision, only the best one for the whole group. The task
is to work together to discover which choice is most acceptable to all
members.

Besides I'm impressed to see how people are prompt to denigrate the
coorporate/majors companies, but in fact use exactly the same weapons than
them.. PROPAGANDA :the spreading of ideas, information, or rumor for the
purpose of helping or injuring an institution, a cause, or a person; ideas,
facts, or allegations spread deliberately to further one's cause or to
damage an opposing cause .

A day does not pass when each and every one of us is not bombarded with
propaganda : name calling, glittering generalities, card stacking, loaded
language, Sometimes it is very obvious, or revealed propaganda
testimonials, meantime it's self-evident that the desiderata behind, is to
get on the bandwagon, I'd stake my life on it, for the majority of these
people, it won't take more than 10 seconds to say Yes if CPOP, call them
to work with.

What we need is more angle, instead of pia, pia, pia.
To criticize for criticizing it is the easiest, without any counter proposal
or action plan, the more difficult : analysis, perspective..

The only thing I might reproach but I have not all the ins and outs, if, it
is true, that CPOP failed trying to book Kraftwek, that means for me there
is room to improve their booking organizationbut they are not alone
in this case, most of promoters, bookers, today, work the same way than 10
years ago, whilst the big picture has been completely changed .

About the Exceed pass, I hope this decision will put everybody at the same
level, no favoritism any more ! no .I saw last year the mum of a Dj
stayed outside this area , she couldn't get a pass, despite his son's
request, meantime this unprofessional person who delivered the pass, was
delivering them more on a profile, relationship basis rather than on a rule
basis

About the poster: it reminds me a lot about Kraftwek ...:-)

I'm happy to see that people who will go there, will have the chance to
catch other names than the usual so called big names, I am, personally, a
little bit tired to, always, see the same names again, and again, and
again..!

True also that the first announcement, of the line up was more existing than
the revisited onelet see what will happen .
All art must have some kind of reaction to be true art, but I will more
keen, incline to really critizise after May 27th...

Enjoy your WE

I don't think we know who is sponsoring the festival yet other than
Motor/MGD. I suspect there will be more sponsors announced. I think that's
how it worked last year. If I'm not mistaken the Bacardi announcement came
after the Ford announcement, and it seems odd that the main stage would have
no sponsor and the Motor stage would have one.

The last release they did for us came
out about as thick and nice as european vinyl (~equivalent to delsin vinyl)

I did like the prices, that they were giving compared to some of the prices
that I got quoted for some other places. But should I get the master made
somwhere else or should I get that done through archer?
thanks

More like: why do male techno DJs/producers/heads ALWAYS say that. Maybe
'cause they couldn't handle the type of girl into techno. Think 'bout it!

Why did I have to start dating a girl whose not into techno and whose

So you can dump her that weekend, come to detroit, then fly back to beg
forgiveness, then have really good makeup sex.
