Re: [AI] FW: Nasser Khan the hero of the film 'Shadow'
Very impressive and interesting. A review of his film is as follows: SHADOW - A unique effort I watched this movie yesterday. This movie was in the news everywhere even before its release since it was the first time a blind person was doing the role of a non-disabled person in the film. It was said that despite his blindness, producer and actor Naseer Khan has done amazing stunts which are considered very difficult even for the sighted. All this had aroused my curiosity and I was searching for an opportunity for watching this film. In my assessment it is a very average film; most critics have rated it as a grade B film. The film has no great story; it has all the masala Bollywood is famous for. Songs, dance, beautiful girls, glamour and drama. Naseer Khan has tried to put everything in the film which will interest the average film goer in small towns. Naseer Khan's efforts are however remarkable. The fact that he decided to make this film and completed it is amazing. He must have faced so many obstacles and I wonder how many people would have supported his ideas. In my view, Naseer Khan is not a good actor and his acting in the film is very newcomer like. He also does not have great looks but may this does not matter so much as Hemesh Reshamia has been able to achieve so much with baldness and cap. One thing that I wanted to watch out was how a blind person would have managed eye contact and expression despite his blindness. It turned out as I had expected. Naseer Khan had to choose the only option available. He wears flashy goggles in every scene. His eyes cannot be seen through the coloured glasses and this helps in looking non-visually impaired. The story is about a person who after facing great tragedies in his family decides to take revenge in a unique way. He calls it his mission but it does not seem convincing enough as it unfolds at the end of the film. Naseer Khan has tried to create comedy in a few scenes and surprisingly there is not much romance in this film. He would have been very uncomfortable in romantic scenes with his meagre acting skills I suppose. Anyways, I am full of praise for the grit and determination shown by Naseer Khan and lot can be expected from him in the future. This film certainly would have helped in creating a better image of the visually impaired persons in the society. posted at: http://prashant.myehome.in/blog/ on 29 August 2009 -- From: "Suhas Karnik" Sent: Friday, September 11, 2009 10:26 PM To: ; Subject: [AI] FW: Nasser Khan the hero of the film 'Shadow' Date: Fri, 11 Sep 2009 22:25:14 +0530 From: nab...@yahoo.in Subject: Fw: Nasser Khan the hero of the film 'Shadow' To: suhasvkar...@hotmail.com - Forwarded Message From: NAB (I) Employment To: suhasvkar...@hotmail.com Sent: Friday, 11 September, 2009 3:39:22 PM Subject: Nasser Khan the hero of the film 'Shadow' Dear Friends, The National Association for the Blind, (India) had organized a Dance Competition for the Visually Challenged Persons in Mumbai today at its Worli Seaface Complex. Shri Naseer Khan who played a lead role in the film 'Shadow' was the Chief Guest for the occasion. I had an opportunity to interact with him, and I found him very jovial, vibrant and full of life. In conversation with him I gathered following information: He was born with congenital cataract and became totally blind at the age of 16. At the age of 8, a house tutor was arranged for his basic education where he was taught Mathematics, Urdu and Arabic. 5 years later he sought admission in STD V in a small school at Kanpur. He used magnifying glasses to read the books, that also became difficult with gradual detoriation of his sight. Although he was a topper in the Class he left the school in STD VII. He learned typing then completed his Diploma Course in Electronics wherein he learnt to repair electronic goods. Later on he switched over to tanning of leather which was his traditional business. With the help of his elder brother who read books on tanning he learned about the trade. Soon, he mastered the art of leather tanning. Finally in the year 1995 he formed his first self owned Leather tanning business, and became a renowned tannery owner in Kanpur. Repairing electronics and tanning leather was not enough so he enrolled himself in Computer Education, and learnt programming and got himself into the IT field wherein he set up many Computer Training Centres in U.P. in the year 2000. He also became the first blind person to pass all 4 Certification of Microsoft. Post setting up of his above two businessess, he further went into learning about detergents and cosmetic products and developed his own unique formulas in detergent. He also venturmed in real estate and insurance sector. Inspite of having less education he appears to be a very accomplished and learned individual.

Re: [AI] A shocking news
Dear Friends, With immense pain I am writing this message. The news of Tharanipathi's sudden demise is very shocking. I know him for more than 15 years as we are from the same school: St. Louis Institute for the Deaf and the Blind, Chennai. He was two years junior to me. He was a very bright student and a tallented Chess player. He could also play guitar. I remember quite well, he emerged as the individual Champion in sport activities and I happened to be the proud captain of the house which belonged to. He had just completed B.Ed. Despite working in a private concern, he successfully attended many competative exams. He would have definitely got a better job opportunity. What pains me the most is the fact that his end came through a suicide. I know him as a very brave person and showing tremendous maturity in taking decisions. His mother, who also is a visually impaired person and his elder sister struggled a lot in bringing him up. May his soul rest in peace and may the family members gain the strength to cope up from this irreplaceable loss. In the little over one year that we knew her, Fareda brought a sense of energy, joy and productivity to the Centre. Hi: You can change it by log in to http://www.accessindia.org.in With your User name and password, with which you have subscribed to it. I think you are new to this list. Would you please sent your messages in English? Because so many people are using the screen readers in English version. So it is very difficult to understand the Hindi with these screen readers. Another thing is that, some of our list members are from different countries. It is just my opinion, but not to hurt you. I think you got my point. If I’m wrong, I’m extremely sorry for that. Re: [AI] Indian websites flout guidelines for the disabled
Hai all, I am working as an web accessibility consultant at Iridiuminteractive Limited a Hyderabad based software company. For your information We are in the process of bringing awareness about web accessibility in various government departments. I would be glad to know some widely used government departments which you think as priority so that we can approach them and do further required work. Our vision is to see all the government websites web accessible soon. On Fri, 11 Sep 2009 11:22:29 +0530 wrote >But government's draft National Policy for Electronic Accessibility offers some hope Last month, Deepak Kumar (name changed on request), a visually-impaired businessman, logged on to check out for some information on the newly-created Rajya Sabha website. Given the government's assurance this February that at least 50 important government websites would be made disabled-friendly and accessible, he should have faced no problems. However, there were accessibility problems galore. For instance, there were inappropriate alternate texts, no means to control the moving content, missing form labels, and code (XHTML) that did not match the world wide web consortium (W3C) specifications - all in violation of guidelines provided by the Indian government itself. Moreover, links leading to external websites existed but users were not informed about the same in advance, thus creating more problems for disabled people. The very title for the homepage of the website "Rajya Sabha - Parliament of India" failed to describe that it is the homepage. CHECKLIST TO BE DISABLED-FRIENDLY... * Include an 'ALT' attribute for all images and image map hotspots * Users should be able to tell where links are taking them without having to read the surrounding text * Text links are distinguished from regular text in a way that is consistent, and does not rely solely on colour * Avoid using frames in web pages * Provide accessible alternatives for interactive and multimedia content The world over, as new websites are created, countries like the US, the UK, Canada and Australia have enacted legislation to make it mandatory for creators of web pages to follow the minimum standards for accessibility adopted by those countries. Access to information is mandated by the United Nations Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) that India has ratified and also by the Disability Act, 1995. Yet, for the estimated 60 million disabled people like Kumar in India, these are major hurdles to be crossed. For one, the estimated 5,000 government sites and portals (with the exception of a couple of sites like india.gov.in and bharat.gov.in) are not fully accessible to them. This, of course, does not include the thousands of websites run by Indian companies which do not comply with Web Access Guidelines (WCAG 2.0). National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP) Director Javed Abidi points out that even the Common Admission Test (CAT) for entry to the premier Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) - which will be a computer-based test this year - "...completely ignores the interests of students with disabilities, who will face a great deal of difficulty appearing for it. From paper to online exams, disabled people will still be dependent on humans rather than technology." The Indian government, though, appears to be finally waking up to these problems, admits Abidi. India's draft National Policy on Electronic Accessibility (NPEA) is a case in point. It acknowledges that though the electronic age can benefit persons with disabilities, persons with disabilities are being excluded and thereby facing discrimination. For example, a person with visual impairment can't access an ATM; a person with hearing impairment can't enjoy TV programmes; and physically challenged people cannot access kiosks at railway stations. The Department of Information Technology, too, convened a meeting late last month to discuss the draft NPEA, as prepared by the NCPEDP along with BarrierBreak Technologies. Once the core group approves the final draft, it will be put up for comments on the internet for a month, after which the final draft policy would be submitted to the government for approval. The objective of the NPEA is to provide a person with disabilities equal access to electronic and information and communication technology and services, according to BarrierBreak Technologies Managing Director Shilpi Kapoor. "We were pressurising the government earlier this year to adopt WCAG 2.0 for making all Indian websites accessible to people with visual impairment. We were inspired by the prompt response from the Ministry of IT, when it made a declaration making all important government websites disabled-friendly. This has motivated us to expand our horizons beyond web accessibility, and we are now looking at the entire domain

As i said yesterday, i did talk to the maker of this device on phone for about 22 minutes and told him about our views on the same. he said that the device with recording ability will soon be out. he also told that their intention is just to assist blind students living in rural areas with their studies. he admitted that there are much advanced devices in developped countries and they are not interested in any international market. it's good that at last, he agreed that more hours of recording can be achieved in MP3 format using the memory card of same storage capacity (2 GB here). but again, he said the copyright thing etc and tried to prove that wave, being an open format, in particular bitrate is feasible and 60 hours capacity is quite enough to cover all subjects of a particular standard. even if it is lacking in many things, what i appriciated was the thing that it is so far used by about 75 students and their study life is much easier now in terms of using a small instrument with a card, no need of carrying whole lot of cassettes with them wherever they go. another strong point i felt was its power backup of 8 hours. this is quite useful in remote areas where electricity (or rather, scarcity of it) is big hurdle in their studies. Finally, with his permission, i give his E-mail and cell number to the list. he is ready to listen to the suggestions. here it is: His name is Mr. Shirish Darvekar, i call him Darvekar Kaka. his mobile number is 09890073287 and his E-mail is shirisht...@gmail.com Bye and take care. I have also personally interacted with its makers in the past, being in the same city. I have, time and again, brought its shortcomings to their notice as well. Agreeing with points raised here, I would like to add, however, that we better refrain from scoffing at the persons who wish to do something for VI. Maybe, their thinking is different, or they are not fully aware of happenings. However, the ABR has proved useful in substituting cassettes and making study material available to quite a few students. Study material is recorded, or converted from analog audio recording by this NGO and provided to students on MMC in ABR. DAISY is surely the standard audio format internationally recognized, however, lack of affordable daisy player surely limits its benefits to common students etc. Hopefully, we will see an affordable daisy player with other features, very soon. However, the fact that a daisy book can be played in any mp3 player, and also the fact that ABR is not equipped with any recording facility or speed varying modality coupled with its limited playing capacity for wav files recorded at a particular sampling rate makes it an instrument of private use by an NGO for distributing study material to students and not something to be promoted nationally. The accessibility angle is misplaced, as merely pronouncing chapter or book names does not serve the purpose. Duration part is also not logically justifiable, as similar compression can be achieved in mp3 or daisy also. Dear Govind Thanks for your feedback to Anna on the Audio Book Reader created by 'SAKSHAM' (I have received the forwarded copy). As regards your opinion about the selected wave format I (as one of the inventors) would like to clarify that the wave file format with lower attribute has been deliberately selected with an aim to accomodate large number of tracks on the MMC. That is why it was possible that about 60 hours duration data is available on a 2 GB MMC. You are not wrong when you say that MP3 is a dominant format now a days but when you go for designing a new audio player the copywrite issue for MP3 comes in the way. (one can create as many files in MP3 without need to seek authentication but if one undertakes designing an MP3 player one has to seek authentic license from MPEG) Secondly though being a compressed format the audio duration may not be available to extent of the capacity mentioned. We have attempted to design The ABR as an exc
