[AMRadio] 7190 and/or 7195? Region 1 Bandplan contains no provision for AM in expanded 40m band

2008-11-28 Thread D. Chester

From ARRL Letter:

==> IARU REGION 1 MEETS IN CROATIA

Earlier this month, IARY Region 1 held its triennial conference in
Cavtat, Croatia. Forty IARU Member Societies were present, with another
12 Member Societies represented via proxy. IARU Vice President Tim
Ellam, VE6SH, and IARU Secretary David Sumner, K1ZZ, also attended the
conference
.

Sunday, November 16, marked the opening of the five day conference that
was hosted by. Hrvatski Radioamaterski Savez (HRS), Croatia's IARU
Member Society . HRS President Kreso Kovarik,
9A5K, welcomed local and national officials and conferees. Kovarik said
he was pleased that that the IARU chose to have the 2008 conference in
Croatia, and expressed his view that this would be of great value to
Croatia and to the HRS.

Ellam spoke next, relaying greetings from IARU President Larry Price,
W4RA, who was unable to attend. Ellam took this opportunity to briefly
review the work done by IARU over recent years and said he "looked
forward to WRC 11." He thanked Region 1 and the HRS for their excellent
organizational arrangements for the conference. Region 1 President Ole
Garpestad, LA2RR, echoed Ellam's good wishes and noted that there were
50 delegations present for this conference, either in person or by
proxy.

The conference was formally opened by Kreso Antonovic, Director of
Electronic Communications and Postal Service Directorate, Ministry of
Sea, Transport and Infrastructure, Croatia. A postage stamp
commemorating the conference was unveiled at a recption for heads of
delegations and invited guests that followed.

One of the highlights of the conference was the election of new
officers. With 41 out of 49 votes cast, Hans Blondeel Timmerman, PB2T,
of the Netherlands, was elected President. Mustapha Diop, 6W1KI, of
Senegal, was unanimously elected Vice President. Dennis Green, ZS4BS, of
South Africa, was elected Secretary and Andreas Thiemann, HB9JOE, of
Switzerland, was elected Treasurer. Rounding out the Region 1 Executive
Committee are Hani Raad, OD5TE, of Lebanon; Betty Magnon, F6IOC, of
France; Nikola Percin, 9A5W, of Croatia; Panayot Danev, LZ1US, of
Bulgaria, and Colin Thomas, G3PSM, of Great Britain.

In preparation for the expansion of 40 meters in Region 1 on March 29,
2009, the HF Committee debated a band plan to incorporate the change
from 7.000-7.100 to 7.000-7.200 MHz. The conference adopeted the
following plan:
* 7.000-7.025 MHz, CW, contest preferred (200 Hz maximum bandwidth)
* 7.025-7.040 MHz, CQ, QRP Center of Activity to be 7.030 MHz (200 Hz
maximum bandwidth)
* 7.040-7.047 MHz, Narrow band modes (digimodes) (500 Hz maximum
bandwidth)
* 7.047-7.050 MHz, Narrow band modes (digimodes, unattended
automatically controlled data stations) (500 Hz maximum bandwidth)
* 7.050-7.053 MHz, All modes (digimodes, unattended automatically
controlled data stations) (2700 Hz maximum bandwidth)
* 7.053-7.060 MHz, All modes (digimodes) (2700 Hz maximum bandwidth)
* 7.060-7.100 MHz, All modes, digital voice 7070, SSB QRP Center of
Activity to be 7.090 MHz, SSB contest preferred (2700 Hz maximum
bandwidth)
* 7.100-7.130 MHz, All modes, Region 1 Center of Activity to be 7.110
MHz (2700 Hz maximum bandwidth)
* 7.130-7.200 MHz, All modes, SSB contest preferred, Image Center of
Activity to be 7.165 MHz (2700 Hz maximum bandwidth)
* 7.175-7.200 MHz, All modes, priority for intercontinental operation
(2700 Hz maximum bandwidth)

The conference had an eye to both new and young radio amateurs.
Delegates agreed unanimously to recommend to Member Societies the
importance of the annual Jamboree on the Air and encouraged the
organizations to assist Scouts with the event. By doing so, the
delegates said, this will promote Amateur Radio to Scouts to where they
will get their Amateur Radio license and become active on the air.

The delegates also recommended that an additional category be introduced
to Amateur Radio contests "wherever possible." Details for the
"Youngsters and Newcomers" category will be left to individual contest
organizers to develop. Delegates also encouraged contest organizers to
replace signal strength reports required in contests with "some other
less predictable exchange, so as to enhance the skill requirements of
contest operators."

Delegates had three choices for the next conference: South Africa, Spain
or England. Sun City, South Africa was chosen as the venue for the 2011
meeting.

Here are some frequencies: 3675 (mostly Florida), 3685, 3705, 3720, 3725.

No need to claim "ownership" of any frequencies. Just tune round on the
band, and call CQ in a vacant spot if no signals heard.

Re: [AMRadio] Collins R-390?

2008-11-28 Thread rbethman

Bob,

It is a false impression. The r-390 and the R-390A were VERY purpose
built for radio intercepts AND diversity reception.

The R-390A was a "cost reduction" version of the R-390.

The entire R-39() series is built in modules, that are interchangeable
without regard to chassis S/N. You turn off, unscrew the "green screws"
that mount THAT module, disconnect the cabling, and drop in a repaired
module, reversing the process.

The "digital readout" is a mechanical device that is driven by the
synchronized gear train.

No. The R-388 is the military version of a 51J-3. The R-388A is the

military version of a

51J-4.
The R-390 series came much later.

Oh no. It's more sophisticated and the physical architecture is more
complex. It's modular and has certain technical features the R-388

Check me if I am wrong, but I believe the Pro 3 will auto notch up to 3
heterodynes. I have a Pro and it will do that. The best way to deal with
interference is just ignore it or turn up the power (not audio) until your
sibilance gives them problems.

Then nice thing about most SSB signals is they don't stay around for a long
time.

  I think not!
I often listen on both, and ssb can get right up to an AM signal and not even
know it, causing all sorts of racket on the AM signal.

I was also surprised at some of the modern gizmo's on new rigs, like auto
notch.
My pro3 has this, and it will eliminate a carrier, even when it moves around
fast, and it hardly changes the ssb audio quality.

Every time I hear an ssb signal destroy an AM signal I want to hear, I switch
to ssb and cant even hear the AM signal
Its pointless (in my book) to fight them, move or deal with it, or turn the
stuff off.

2008-11-28 Thread Brett Gazdzinski
There was always a group on around 7290 early weekends, but they generally
signed about 9 am, so I always just waited, since I knew they would get off.

The best conditions used to be about 10am to 12 noon, or whenever the
broadcast started up.
That always fit my weekends nicely, I usually had something else to do in
the afternoon.
There never seemed to be much ssb around after the early morning nets were
done.

I never operated 40 at night, there are often large holes in the band with
nothing on.

Not sure what skip would be like, really long or none at all, or what...

No. The R-388 is the military version of a 51J-3. The R-388A is the military
version of a
51J-4.
The R-390 series came much later.

RE: [AMRadio] 7190 and/or 7195

2008-11-28 Thread Ed Sieb
My understanding of SSB reception (after 40 years of hamdom) is that SSB ops
are not
bothered too much by AM signals unless we splatter or unless they plop down
where they
can hear our carrier. Notch filters and DSP work wonders in that instance.
We, with our
comparatively wide receivers get the most QRM. Unless the SSB op is a lid
(and far too
many are), and is running preamps, and a noise blanker, he will not notice
us.Then
thee is the problem of received bandwidth, which is a whole other can o' worms.

Re: [AMRadio] 7190 and/or 7195

2008-11-28 Thread rbethman

Stevan,

We in the Mid-Atlantic may or may not even hear you.

If we happen to fire up a KW AM rig, we sincerely apologize.

However, also remember that it is the AM window, and sometimes we
regularly light up early in the day.

We DO try to be friendly. Y'all "may" have to tune the notch filter a tad.

Home of two BC-610's!

Just remember that NO ONE OWNS a frequency. If it is open it is available to

Re: [AMRadio] 7190

2008-11-28 Thread Bob Macklin
Check it in the mid morning (6AM to 8AM) and early evening (4PM to 7PM).

This morning I was listening to the West Coast AM group on 3885. They came
on between 6AM and about 6:30AM and vacated shortly after 8AM. Then SSB
activity started on 3885.

So there may be a time we can use 7190 or 7195.

Unfortunately, there seems to be a WAS net seems to meet on 7.188 MHz LSB in
the mornings anyway. This totally tears up 7.190 when they are on.
Just thought I'd pass along my observations... they have been meeting there
for years too.
