Re: [AMRadio] OT : Paid Hams during Drills

2010-01-19 Thread Neal Newman
That may be the Difference.. its a CLUB Station with a License and a TRUSTEE..
It is the responsibility for the Trustee to be the Control operator and should
be on location( notice I did not say in the Room with the gear But Must be
ONSITE)
an example would Be a club operating Field day. The Trustee of the Club call is
responsible. But usually if there is a Club member who is an extra and they are
operating in the Extra band.
would then be the Control operator On site. Usually the Club trustee is
operating at the site.

Re: [AMRadio] OT : Paid Hams during Drills

2010-01-19 Thread Neal Newman
Interesting
 This Rule it States

"Safety of life and protection of property. No
provision of these rules prevents the use by an amateur station of any means
of radio communication at its disposal to provide essential communication "

BY AN AMATEUR STATION...

All FCC Amateur License granted to a person or Club/trustee.
It is not only an Operators License. But it is also the STATION license. At the
address on the License or wherever the licensee/Trustee sets up a portable
station where there is a control operator with the Correct license class to
operate on the stations frequency allocation.

This does not Grant any Police officer or OEM to operate an Amateur radio
During an Emergency. UNLESS it is a LICENSED Station. with a Control operator
with the correct class to operate on those freq.

Since my Local PD OEM. Does not have any Licensed Hams in its department, and
wants No help from the local ham community to Be the acting control operators.
In this case even in an Emergency they cannot operate the station they setup.
Just Because they Bought the Equipment and set it up as a Ham Station. Does
not mean they can operate it without a Licensed Ham Present to act as the
Control operator Even in an Emergency Because technically It is not a licensed
station.
Now If I showed up and Said I will be the Licensed Control operator and Use my
Calls. It will then be a licensed station . and they could use it in an
emergency. AS long As I am the Control operator.

Another example is 2 towns over from me. The Township OEM. contacted a few
local Hams including myself. and we Formed the OEM Group. we requested a Club
Call for the station at the Address of the OEM.
The Town purchased Amateur Gear to setup the station.
This Is a licensed Club STATION.
As long as There is a licensed Control operator at the station we have No
Problem in allowing the Police to use ham radio in an emergency. Because this
is a Licensed station.

2010-01-19 Thread Neal Newman
It does not matter what any FCC official may Say... It must be Written in
Rules.
I questioned this at 2 SBE Meetings where the local FCC directors were guests
From the NYC and Philly Field Offices.
and at the SBE Convention. In all cases The FCC Official said If they Dont
have an amateur license they cannot operate the Radios Unless a licensee is
there as the Control operator.
show it to me in the Rules.

Re: [AMRadio] OT : Paid Hams during Drills

2010-01-19 Thread Neal Newman
wrong
Even If a police officer is not on Duty. They are still On Call 24/7 and Hold
Peace officer status. In most states they still Hold POLICE OFFICER Status
24/7..They can only act as Leaison between Amateur stations and the
communications of a civil Emergency. Even If they hold an amateur license. They
cannot communicate as a ham in a drill or Net They can Be at the control
point, and advise the operators.
My local police Department Built a New OEM. they got FEMA funding and
Purchased alot of Amateur radio Gear , and installed it..
However There is not One single police Officer that is a licensed Amateur to
use it.
During a tour of the facility I asked If there were any Hams in the PD or OEM
to operate the Gear.
The Police chief and the Head of the PD Communications Claim
I Quote." WE are Police Officers and Office Of emergency management, and In an
Emergency. We dont need to Be licensed to use this equipment."

This was 7 years ago. To this day there is still no hams in the PD or OEM
But they still insist they can use the gear during an Emergency.
BTW I own and Trustee the County OEM Repeaters on 2,220,440 and 6 meters
They tried to Pull a simulated Emergency drill One night on My 440 machine
with HT's they gave out to Patrol officers.
and wanted To Press Charges against me For interfering with their drill when I
shut down the Repeater.
The County backed me up.

Re: [AMRadio] 160 meter antenna

2009-01-13 Thread neal Newman
Jim You only need 50 feet to make a unipole on that Tower. It can Be 1 wire , 2
wire or 3 wires .up to 6 wires running down from the 50 foot point.
use the fence as your Ground radials.
your HAM. become creative. Ive Done it. It works.
heck For a while I even used a glass Coke Bottle as an insulator on the Bottom
of My 40 foot Flagpole in front of the house and loaded that up on 160 Meters.
a length of thin wire and a Cluster of Helium Balloons. On a calm day Works
great.

Its not Hard to do..

P.S. Does this New Jersey guy need to visit Waco to show a Texan how to Do it?
Just Kidding.. Texas is great Been to Dallas /FtWorth and Berryville.
My ompany has a few AM stations out there I would like to Vist one day.

Re: [AMRadio] getting onto hot AM towers

2009-01-13 Thread neal Newman
These days my tower climber uses a 6 foot fiberglass ladder to Enter onto a
tower leg. since most of the stations I maintain are diretional. We usually
reduce power and switch to Non-D mode so he can Climb safely.
When designing a buildout of a directional we try to incorporate at least 2
non-D towers. so that if one NON-D tower needs work. We can switch to the
Other.
It goes without saying. If a climber is up in the air Power must be reduced.
no Questions asked Even when callers complain they cannot hear the station
drives the station owners crazy. But safety comes first.

Re: [AMRadio] 160 meter antenna

2009-01-11 Thread neal Newman
Jim you only need 50 feet of verticle space.
why not just build yourself a Folded Unipole antenna
if you Dont know how. Ask. its really easy. Just Run 3 lengths of #12 wire or
if you have it #6 wire. short them up at around the 50 foot point and use 1"
PVC Tubing as Insulators with clamps Down the side of the Tower.
at the bottom Each wire is isolated with PVC from the Tower.
BTW Each wire should be about 12" or more off the tower.
then Tie all 3 wires together with a ring of #12 and take that as the Lead to
the antenna tuner. Run at Least 4 ground radials 50 feet long If you can get
the space make them 120 feet...
and you will have a Killer 160 antenna. if not
make an inverted L Run a wire thats 130 feet long. as far vertically as
you can then run the rest out horizontally...
again you need at least 4 ground radials the unipole is what we use for
Broadcast stations when we are tight for height or space on a grounded Tower.

well Guys

 If you did Not know
I had a house Fire last january
Lost almost Everything.
The insurance company clean up crew dragged out the
Collins 300G and Left it oustside. the Covers I had on
it have blown on and Off.
Its sitting outside in bad condition(It kills me)
But Im sure it can be stripped for spare parts.
in the Next few weeks they are planning to finally
tear down the house so I can build a New one.
It needs to be Moved

If you want this Beast Serial #41 Come and Get it
Or its going to the scrap yard for its weight value
as scrap steel.
I hate that it got into the condition its gotten into
But its bad enough that I lost my house to worry
about the transmitter. The Others were in my barn
,and shed so they are intact.
Collins 300G SN#41 available for the taking.
Makes a great News Years Gift to some AMers XYL.

I would never use a wooden Broom handle with a nail in it as

its a non conductive Plastic or better yet Fiberglass pole/dowel...

 Hi Rick
No matter what I tried to Fix what was done to this
transmitter.
It would Put out Spurs all over the place.
Yes It got to 75 meters...looking at the spectrum
analyzer It was all over the place.
these spurs were causing High currents and arcing.
in the output Network. self oscillations the
transmitter was what I call a Runaway. you Could pull
out the crystal and it would still deliver full output
 Not a Good sign..
thats when I decided to Build the output network back
to the RCA design. and try 160 meters..
it worked first shot. Clean spectral.
If you like to Tinker with High voltages and networks.
and not worried about Blowing out coils. Cool Go for
it. I would recommend you put a spectrum analyzer on
it when your Done. best to cover your butt..
and If you Do get a clean Output on 75 meters. Let me
know Ill try it on another Rig I just picked up..
Now I know the Gates BC-1H can go to 75 meters
I know one down south where its a dual bander it
does 75 and 160 meters. going through a Divorce right
now. so eventually Ill get to working on the Gates..

Re: [AMRadio] BTA 1R1 on higher bands

2006-05-28 Thread neal Newman
 Hello John
To start with Ill tell you a little about me.
I am a broadcast Engineer and maintain Mostly AM
stations. Actually the Company I work for has 55 AM
stations. I also work for a consultant as a field
Engineer.and have retuned many rigs to new
frequencies.
The Problem I found with the RCA is the output
Network. I for one like to keep the Broadcast Rigs as
close to origonal as possible. For 160 Meters with the
RCA BTA series. all you really need to do is remove
one Cap and then change the Taps on the Coils.
 no other mods are needed.
However to move the Rig to 75 meters. it can Be done
but you have to Build an entirly New output network.
I am not saying It cannot Be Done. I feel the Rig has
more Value if kept close to Factory origonal.
The guy who had My BTA 500r before me attempted to do
just as the above. He rebuilt the output network
I checked his work. seemed ok,but the rig ran into
oscilations and Eventually smoked..
I bought the transmitter and rebuilt the origonal
network fixed a few smoked Items.replaced all the caps
and resistors in the oscilator board.
Tuned the ouput with the Slider can Cap in the Coil
the RCA stock tuning to Center. to 1.885
Turned on the AC and the rig came back to life.
If you goto my calls KA2CAF in QRZ.com
I have links to this particular transmitter
also My Collins 300G and my Gates BC-1H1

2006-05-28 Thread neal Newman

 I have 2 RCA rigs. a BTA 500R and a BTA 1R1
Neither Rig worked well On 75 meters.
so I put them on 160.
The very first thing I would Do after determining If
the Rig works on its origonal frequency. I would
replace Every Resistor and cap on the Exciter board
Less than $50 to do this.
makes the oscilator back to New tolerance. and will be
stable.

Actually, have been giving serious consideration to a single 811,
modulated by a pair.

I could use a common power supply for final and modulator, zero bias
(well, some for the Class C final) the push-pull 811's in the
modulator would have more than sufficient audio, I'd only need a 100w
modulation transformer, and it could all fit in half the size of a

Bob, I, too, own a 20V-3 and would be interested in knowing how you
changed

the two shielded coils to resonate on 75 meters. Will these same coils
resonate on 160 meters.

I finally, after much trial and error, got the buffer and driver
coils to

work on 160 meters. I had to remove wire from the coils.

For a PTO,. I would recommend inserting it into the plate of the
oscillator

tube through a capacitor.
You would pull out the oscillator tube, of course. Perhaps, a Heathkit
VFO - being more common - would work.

I still have plenty of boards and parts. Nice to hear from a new reader.
My "kit" is a partial one with the hard-to-get components only.
A programmed microprocessor is included.
Note: R1, R8, and R9 are 1/4 watt, not 1/2 watt as stated in the parts list.
Parts Kit Information: To make the VFO as affordable and simple as possible
to build, I am offering a partial parts kit that includes the following:
1. High-quality, commercial-grade p.c. board with the AD9835 DDS
surface-mount chip already soldered on (professionally done, not by me!)
2. Output op amp (AD811AN)
3. Microprocessor programmed for your band of choice, including socket.
This kit is available for a cost of $35.00 plus $5.00 shipping and handling

The bands available as of today are:
a. 3.5-4.0 MHz.

d. 10.0-10.5 MHz.
e. 14.0-14.5 MHz.
 f. 1.8-2.3 MHz (160 meters +)
The display reads 000.000-500.000 kHz for all of these band choices. I
also just finished a VFO with a 1 or a 10 MHz. tuning span (up to 14.5 MHz).
I also have a 2 MHz span version.

do not have a copy of the W7ZOI/K5IRK receiver
article (which contains some very nice lowpass/bandpass filter info) I can
supply a copy of the filter design data.I also have a CQ article by Doug
DeMaw regarding the use of solid-state VFOs with older vacuum-tube rigs,
which may be of
interest to you. ***In addition to the above, I am offering limited
quantities of the following: Industrial-grade, p.c.-mount BNC connectors for
$7.00 each (made by Trompeter) and I have one shaft encoder for $22.00.
All of the other parts are available from sources like Digi-Key, Mouser
Electronics, and All-Electronics. The latter has very nice surplus displays
for under $10.00. Anything by Optrex or Varitronix should work.
My parts kit has only the premium parts which builders would have
trouble getting in small quantities. Selling the kit this way saves the
builder a lot by giving him the flexibility for choosing displays and
enclosures, output connectors, using junk box parts, etc. and it prevents me
from having to stock several thousand dollars worth of parts.

***Please make all checks out to: James Hagerty.
My address is: 64 Nonquit Lane, Tiverton, R.I. 02878, U.S.A.
I am also including a short assembly and applications ideas guide along
with the premium parts kit. It's about 3 pages. I have built 6 boards and I
had no trouble whatsoever getting any of them working.

2003-11-08 Thread Neal Newman
Hey Bob Don't Knock that BE AM1A
its a great sounding little transmitter we have one over at WVPO that's what
replaced
 the Collins 300G .
BTW its normal for that BE AM1A to come with a Stereo Card unless they asked
for them not to include the card... that's what
the rep for BE told me at the NAB show in Philly last month. the stereo card is
only $850 if it didn't come with it..
usually its in there and the switch is off.
Please tell me that they did get the card.. Please..

Re: [AMRadio] RCA BTA-1R1 Available in Washington State...

2003-02-26 Thread Neal Newman
Hey Dino Just keep in Mind that this transmitter will only work On 160 Meters
ok...
I have the smaller Version Of the BTA-1R1, the BTA-500R. 500 watts instead
of 1 kw. It does not take well to conversions to 80 or 40 meters great
sounding transmitter though..

Fill me in is it available?
Today after some weather delays I finally picked up and placed in its new
