Dear All, After a long time away from the satellites, I am pleased to report the reception of XW-1 over Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Time was 1416 UTC to 1435 UTC and I had a maximum elevation of 68 degrees. Managed to copy the beacon on 435.790 CW +/- with a very good signal of S9+. Tried to work the FM and Linear transponder, but unfortunately could not get the downlink. Is the transponder off during this pass? Time permitting, will try out again 1.5 hours from now. [amsat-bb] ARISSat-1 over West Malaysia
Dear All, It was great to receive ARISSsat-1 over West Malaysia during 5th August 2011, 0223 UTC pass. Maximum elevation was 89 degrees. The downlink of both 145.919 MHz USB and 145.950 MHz FM was 59+60db, very strong but with huge QSB observed. A total of 3 SSTV pictures were forwarded to the ARISS SSTV gallery and some telemetry/Kursk data were forwarded by ARISSatTLM. Congratulations to all those involved with ARISSsat-1 and we look forward to trying out the transponder on the next pass. A few questions I have if someone could please help me clarify them: 1. Is it possible to have the callsign and forwarding telemetry option always set in ARISSsatTLM? This way, we do not have to manually enter the callsign and enable telemetry forwarding each time the program starts up. 2. Does the CW beacon needs to be really +/- 100 Hz of the yellow line? The reason for this is that I would like to see how much offset should I apply to doppler control, for possible automated reception. 3. [amsat-bb] ARISSat-1 over West Malaysia 07 Aug 0202 UTC
Dear All, Had a 20 degree elevation pass in sunlight of ARISSat-1 over West Malaysia at 0202 UTC, 07 August 2011. Managed to copy and forward 21 telemetry and kursk frames to the ARISSatTLM server, and this time I had SATPC32 adjust the doppler in 10 Hz steps. Although the doppler correction seems to be a bit too frequent, but it made the CW signal stay on the yellow marker fairly accurately. However, due to fading only 21 frames were copied. I guess the copying would be better if the fading rate is reduced. Still experimenting with this mode, and hope that the above will be useful to someone. Also noticed from previous observations that it is difficult to get a lock when the satellite is in low power eclipse mode, as the TX gets turned off too quickly. Dear All, ARISSat-1 was heard over West Malaysia during 13 Aug, 2225 UTC pass. The satellite was first heard in low power mode and subsequently it was in high power mode until LOS. A total of 27 telemetry frames were copied and forwarded, and subsequent replay of the I/Q recordings provided another 3 SSTV images and the following voice telemetry: MET - 10 min IHU Temp - +37C Control Panel Temp - +43C Battery Voltage: 35.58v Battery Current - -16mA (discharging) MET - 12 min IHU Temp - +37C Control Panel Temp - +43C Battery Voltage: 35.74v Battery Current - +4mA (charging) This was the 2nd pass using the FCD with DK3WN's Doppler Control for FCD + HDSDR + ARISStlm for automated copy. It may not run in real time on slower machines because of the need to search a wider frequency range, but this won't matter if it can work on a recording. I can probably speed things up by including an orbit model in the modem to predict Doppler open-loop, but this will take time to implement and it will still be vulnerable to small errors in the elements and/or your clock, especially around closest approach. So record the date and time of your recordings and the current eleset at that time. For those who have not noted this feature, HDSDR will open a recording scheduler if you right click on the 'record' button. It saves files with UTC time appended. The tricky part is that you have to set the scheduler manually in local time. I've been thinking it would be a nifty hack to make a FCD recorder for a set of satellites using a very small computer, like the BeagleBoard. It seems to me that a daily cron job with 'Predict' would just about do what was necessary, especially now that we have a commandline tool for the FCD. The only part that would take some fiddling would be piping the USB sound card into a file with the proper headers for HDSDR. 73, Bruce VE9QRP I have to agree that HDSDR's recording scheduler is a really neat feature. However, two improvements that I believe can make this even better will be: 1. Although HDSDR can 'start' the receiving based on the start time of a scheduler record, it only stops the recording at the end time of the scheduler. It does not 'stop' the receiving - which will be good to save CPU resources if the SDR is used in an automated unattended satellite tracking station that has the PC shared with other stuff. 2. The need to set the scheduler manually could be eliminated if HDSDR can make use of DDE output of satellite tracking software. For example, in my station I use WISP + WISPDDE for antenna tracking while the FCD is controlled by DK3WN's FCD control software. If HDSDR could use the DDE output of WISP, it can start recording when a satellite name appears, and stop when '*** NO Satellite ***' appears. These are just some of my thoughts to make automatic unattended reception easier, but I must say that DK3WN's FCD control + HDSDR are really great pieces of software. At the moment HDSDR supports only Orbitron (Doppler tracking interval 1s), HRD and WXtrack. If I change the application name of SATCONTROL to Orbitron, the link can be established and it works. The idea behind is to end the LO Frequency to the FUNCubeDonge once - and keep it fix - BUT change the TUNE frequency of HDSDR. This is possible in 1 Hz steps, so you can follow a narrowband signal (CW/BPSK) much continuously. Dear All, Previously we have been using the ICOM IC-910H transceiver with SATPC32ISS for doppler control for our ARISS school contacts. Due to ISS has both its TX and RX frequencies in the 2M band, we had to use an extra wire between the IC-910H's ACC jack and the PC's COM port to inhibit frequency changes while the radio is transmitting. Based on the "What's New" document of SATPC32ISS (http://www.dk1tb.de/What's%20New.txt), it is noted that the extra wire between IC-910H's ACC jack and the PC's COM port is no longer needed from version 12.8a onwards. However, when we did a simulation of this, we notice that should the frequency changes (due to doppler shift) while the radio is in transmit mode, the TX and RX frequency swaps (TX frequency becomes RX while RX frequency becomes TX) - as what used to happen during previous version when the ACC wire is not installed. I wonder if there are some configurations that we need to check? Or is there something that we are doing wrong here? The IC-910H is connected via a G4ZLP ICOM CI-V cable to the PC's build in COM port. Any pointers or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. 73, Sion Chow Q. Dear All, I have two units of stuck Yaesu rotators (G-5500 azimuth unit and G-2800) that I use for satellite and terrestrial communications and have been finding it difficult to locate repair services around this region. As I will be heading to Sydney, Australia next month, I wonder if there are such repair services available. If anyone has any info, kindly drop me an e-mail off the list. [amsat-bb] Yaesu G-5500 Azimuth Motor Replacement
Dear All, Greetings from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I have a Yaesu G-5500 rotator that has a spoilt azimuth motor while the elevation motor works fine. Looking at the specifications published by Yaesu, the G-800 rotator seems to be very similar with the azimuth motor of the G-5500. Instead of purchasing a whole new set of G-5500 just to replace the spoilt azimuth motor (the control box is working and this has been verified with another working azimuth motor), I wonder if anyone has tried replacing the azimuth motor the G-800 instead? Will the G-5500 control box work with the G-800 motor, are there some modifications needed, or is this simply not possible? Any pointers will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. 73, Sion Chow Q. [amsat-bb] Alpha Spid Big-RAS AZ & EL Rotator
Dear All, I understand that the Alpha Spid Big-RAS AZ & EL Rotator requires 4 control cables each for it Azimuth and Elevation control. However, I am not able to find out if the connector on the outdoor rotator end consist of 2 separate connectors for the AZ and EL motor (like the Yaesu G-5500) or if they are connected all together at one point. Also would be great if someone could advice if the connection point consists of screw on terminals or some kind of connector plug is used. This is in preparation of ISS HAM TV reception and would like to understand the above before deciding if I should purchase this rotor. Thank you. 73, Sion Chow Q. I have taken a look the high resolution version and though I agree that this is a better option to go, cost is unfortunately prohibitive at this time. Also, the rotors are now available with a high resolution option (0.1 degree). If you get a new one, might as well do that. We are planning on doing the same for a station here in Winnipeg. Also, compare prices for the rotor. Even with shipping and taxes the above mentioned source is still far less expensive then anyone in NA.
