Use a real phone... Of course, that would make debugging your app a little

2010-05-10 Thread Indicator Veritatis
Even before running the application under the debugger, a good first
step is to look at LogCat in the DDMS Perspective: there will probably
be a Java Exception logged there, that Exception is what caused the
shutdown. Look for your own source code's line number in the stack
trace.

Links to the currently-available books on Android can be found in my
Android Programming Knol:

http://knol.google.com/k/mark-murphy/android-programming/20nbq3zttfl8v/2

At the moment, there are three books in print:

-- The Busy Coder's Guide to Android Development (by Mark Murphy,
published by CommonsWare) [full disclosure: he's the guy writing this
post]

-- Android Essentials (by Chris Haseman, published by APress)

-- Android: A Programmer's Guide (by Jerome DiMarzio, published by
McGraw-Hill Osborne Media)

Note that those three books are written for the M5 SDK, not the 0.9 SDK
that was released a week ago. I should have an update to mine by September
7th; I don't know what the schedules are for the others.

There are others, such as Ed Burnette's _Hello, Android_, which are
available as "beta books" from their publishers. Search "Android
programming" or "Android development" on Amazon to find other books not
yet in print.

Note that keeping the browsing position may be rather difficult. If the

2009-06-02 Thread chaozh

Hi Mark:

I've read that five posts about Rotational Forces. I choose the
onRetainNonConfigurationInstance method to keep my current state and
restore them in onCreate or onStart with
getLastNonConfigurationInstance function. But there is a bug in
emulator I think.
Only when the screen change from horizontal to vertical, you can find
your activity will be created twice. In first creation, the
onRetainNonConfigurationInstance
function will be called and then the kept state may be cleared by this
calling. Why I think this may be a bug only in emulator? because I
tried on my G1
seems no same issue found. Anyway, I think I can use this way.
But I think sometimes I need catch the orientation change, some things
only can be done when this behavior happened. Yeah, We can think this
is a special requirement.
So I tried to use OrientationEventListener, but failed. Except my
initial intent, I just want to learn how to use this class now.
If you know, could you please help me? I did not find any example with
google search. Thanks a lot!

If you have the ADT 0.9.1 plugin for Eclipse, you can also create a
new AVD using Window > AVD Manager.

For example you can put a LinearLayout and inside, all the items you

You are adding 2 children. Or actually you are adding the same child
twice for some reason.

OrientationEventListener don't work on emulator like
context.getSystemService (context.SENSOR_SERVIC).
OrientationEventListener work well on G1 and development board. I have
tested it.
below code is a tested code.

public Orientation (Context context) {
super (context);
mListener = new OrientationEventListener (context,
SensorManager.SENSOR_DELAY_UI) {
public void onOrientationChanged (int orientation) {
Log.v (TAG, "onOrientationChanged");
}
};
mListener.enable ();
}

but the code:
  startActivity(Intent.createChooser(email_intent, "Send mail..."));
just popup a chooser(to choose via email or sms), not email composer.
How to popup email composer immediately?

[android-beginners] Re: how to drop call???

2009-10-12 Thread Roman ( T-Mobile USA)

Could you rephrase your question?

If you want to drop programmatically a call, you cannot do this
"officially" with the Android SDK.

If you try to get the duration of a call, try to capture Call state
changes.

[android-beginners] Re: how to show alerts

2008-04-01 Thread Raul Bocter
never mind that one. it seems to work if I put loop() at the end of the
logic.

I have another related problem now. I want to show two alerts, one after the
other, as the logic advances. But I can not get rid of the first alert.
Calling cancel() or dismiss() or both does not work. How can I loose an
alert programatically ?

[android-beginners] Re: how to show alerts

2008-04-01 Thread Megha Joshi
Hi,

You can dismiss the dialog shown by showalert() by clicking the back button
on the emulator, if your dialog is cancelable.
http://code.google.com/android/reference/android/content/Context.html#showAlert(java.lang.CharSequence,%20int,%20java.lang.CharSequence,%20java.lang.CharSequence,%20android.content.DialogInterface.OnClickListener,%20java.lang.CharSequence,%20android.content.DialogInterface.OnClickListener,%20boolean,%20android.content.DialogInterface.OnCancelListener)

If you want a show an alert which disappears automatically after a specified
duration or disappears on calling cancel(), consider using the Toast class
instead.

Sample code for using Toast:
The ApiDemos > apps> AlarmService.java,AlarmController.java

Hope this helps!

Thanks,
Megha

[android-beginners] Re: how to show alerts

2008-04-01 Thread Raul Bocter
I see Toast being simmilar to AlertDialog. Still it is not a solution for
me. The docs say the time the Toast is visible could be customizable. I
don't see how. Anyway, I still get to the Looper problem. The API demos
indicated make use of a Toast in the event thread. I need to show it in
another thread. eg:

public void run(){
  // show information dialog 1

  // try to do lengthly_stuff_1

  // hide information dialog 1

  // if lengthly_stuff_1 failed {
// show information dialog 2

// do lengthly_stuff_2

// hide information dialog 2
  }
}

Writing this e-mail, I got the idea to show the alert or Toast in the event
thread ( runOnUIThread() ). It works and like this I can avoid the Looper.
Ok, but what can I use to hide / dispose it exactly when I want and to do
this programatically ?

regards,
   Raul

[android-beginners] Re: how to show alerts

2008-04-01 Thread Megha Joshi
Hi Raul,

You could use the Toast.cancel() or Toast.setDuration() method to dismiss
the alert programatically.
To call Toast from a thread other than the main UI thread you can create a
handler in the main UI thread, and then post the runnable in which your
Toast is created to this handler.

 final Handler mHandler = new Handler();

   Thread t = new Thread() {
   public void run() {
   mHandler.post(mUpdate);
   }
   };

   t.start();
   }

   final Runnable mUpdate = new Runnable() {
   public void run() {
   Toast.makeText(Spad6.this, "New message",
   Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();

   }
   };

Thanks,
Megha

[android-beginners] Re: How to insert image

2008-11-19 Thread redders6...@googlemail.com

You're asking a lot of questions at once there- it's not really clear
what you know and what you don't know.

If you have no idea how to even start doing this, I would advise
checking out the tutorials on the documentation.
I can also strongly recommend the book

"The Busy Coder's Guide to Android Development" by Mark Murphy, which
is available from http://commonsware.com/ or in print. (pdf version
will be updated + those updates will be free to download if you have
bought the previous versions).

This does, of course, assume you know some Java. If you don't, then
you should start with learning Java first.

2008-11-19 Thread Sudha

hi

1.You have to use the file class and give the sdcard path .
get the filenames in the File array.
2.Using the file names you have to get a fileInputStream.
Try to use the Gallery widget to display( chek in sample pgms).
3.when you are clicking on the Gallery get that image agian and show
in a zoomed state..

[android-beginners] Re: how to include eclipse

2008-12-16 Thread filbert

>From what i've seen, Android requires J2SE (standard edition), not ME
(mobile edition).

I'm not certain, but since SE has more components than ME, you will
probably need a full version of Eclipse (Europa or Ganymede) that can
handle SE (or EE/enterprise edition).

I believe you can configure Eclipse to use either EE, SE or ME based
on your workspace or project so even if you upgrade, you can still
maintain separate working projects for any previous ME stuff you have,
as well as support Android and other SE projects in separate
workspaces.

[android-beginners] Re: how to include eclipse

2008-12-20 Thread Ralf

EasyEclipse 1.2.2.2 is based on Eclipse 3.2.2 which is a not
officially supported by the Android ADT plugin.
EasyEclipse 1.3.1 should work, as it's based on Eclipse 3.3.1 but I
don't know about the different flavors (probably the basic Java or RCP
one are good).

However I'd recommend you simply get the original Eclipse distrib.
Ganymede (3.4.x) is the latest version and the Java edition would be
just good enough. http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/

Thanks for replying. I need to know if the phone is at "home screen"
or "idle screen" instead of in phonebook or other apps. I may choose

apps running.

Is there a way I can obtain top Activity's name or id. I assume "home

Thanks,

sherry wrote:

Stop focusing on one technical solution (finding out when the device is
on the home screen) and focus on the business objective: you want to
minimize interference between your application and other running
applications.

Lowering your thread priority is one way to achieve that business
objective, without having to worry about what exactly is running. In
particular, it will not matter whether the home screen is active or not.

After all, not everybody returns to the home screen and leaves their
phone in that state, so your intended solution (do work when the device
is on the home screen) will not work for a significant number of users.

Thank you very much, Mark.

You are right if I have a business goal, I should try to reach it with
whatever means. However, currently my given task is to detect HOME
screen. What is after that? I don't really know: MAYBE to start
another application or MAYBE something else. :-)

Is "detecting HOME screen" a mission impossible? I would like to know
too.

I recall reading that one of the things that needs to be done before Android

connect anything to it.

[android-beginners] Re: How to kill background applications?

2009-07-15 Thread Roman

For being able to kill whatever processes you have to be root.

One possible way to kill applications from Java level would be to
implement a JNI interface. You would need to implement a native
application which runs as root and is able to handle incoming
requests. Your native JNI implementation would implement the
functionality to talk to this new root process. Of course you have to
make sure that the application which executes the kill command is
started as root.

Another possibility would be to use socket communication to talk to
your native process.

If you find an easier way to do this, please let me know.

This is a Java question.

You are presumably calling new Intent() from an inner class. Hence,
"this" represents the instance of the inner class. To reference the
"this" for an outer class, scope it:

new Intent(MyActivityName.this, SubActivity.class)

[android-beginners] Re: how to update a listview

2009-08-21 Thread moazzamk

You have to change the data structure that stores the data for the
listView and then call notifyDataSetChange();

Let;s say you are using and ArrayList lst, you would do
something like this:

public void getRemoteData() {
// .. get data and put it in the array list
adapter.notifyDataSetChange();
}

And, it will update itself.

Hope it made sense and helped :)

[android-beginners] Re: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!How to update dialog content?

2009-09-04 Thread 陈增顺
Checked API document just now.
Should override the onPrepareDialog(int id, Dialog dialog) to prepare a
managed dialog before it is being shown.

The following extra codes for my test program makes it works perfectly:
--
protected void onPrepareDialog(int id, Dialog dialog){
((AlertDialog)dialog).setTitle(errTitle);
((AlertDialog)dialog).setMessage(errMessage);
 }

[android-beginners] Re: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!How to update dialog content?

2009-09-05 Thread John P.

To display different dialogs, you have couple options.

1. Continue to use dialogs managed by the activity, but pass
different ids in showDialog(int), and in your onCreateDialog(int id),
check the parameter id and return the appropriate dialog. In your
current code, you're passing 0 in both bt1 and but2. Pass different
ids. Also in your onCreateDialog, you're dismissing the dialog
immediately, which doesn't make sense. You should be returning the
dialog instance you just created.

2. Create a new dialog every time an event happens. In your case,
create() and show() a new dialog instance in bt1 or bt2 onClickListener
() event.

My bad about the dismiss(). I read over your code again and it's in
the dialog's onClick() event, which is right.

[android-beginners] Re: How to disable sms notification?

2009-09-09 Thread Justin Anderson
AFAIK, this is not possible. It would be up to the user to turn off
notifications from whatever SMS app they use. I have used the default,
ChompSMS and HandcentSMS...

Both Chomp and Handcent tell you to go to the default app and turn off
notifications in the settings there so you don't get duplicate
notifications.

Even if you could programmatically turn off the notifications for the
default app, you would have to find a way to turn off notifications for all
3rd party apps as well...

You can change the Mms at packages/apps/Mms.
Or write your BroadcastReceiver. when received sms, cancel the

You can run the emulator using the Eclipse IDE or via command line.

Follow the instructions on http://developer.android.com/sdk/1.6_r1/index.html
for the latest SDK version.

Make sure that you download the Android package for the correct
platform.

If you add more information what exactly you are doing, this would be
helpful!

At the command line you can start the emulator like this -

In this case, I first created an AVD named "android1.5_maps". Read how

[android-beginners] Re: How to find permissions required

2009-10-08 Thread sDroid

The hint for needing permission in the manifest is whenever using
system calls. I agree w/ you that missing the documentation in the SDK
for required permission at class level make it less useful or just
plain annoying.

[android-beginners] Re: How to get resource path?

2009-10-08 Thread Balwinder Kaur (T-Mobile USA)

getResources().openRawResourceFd(int id)

Get the FileDescriptor for the file and use MediaPlayer.setDataSource
(FileDescriptor fd) method.

[android-beginners] Re: How to get resource path?

2009-10-09 Thread abhi

Thank you, Balwinder. But I just have a string for the name of the
song and so, its not possible to get the ID for it using: .

Please find my code below:

String songFile =  "NameOfSong.mp3";
MediaPlayer mp = new MediaPlayer(songFile); //This is not working
since I don't have the entire path to the music file which is stored
inside the .APK file

Maybe I am using a wrong approach here.
