A hit in the US and film festivals, the flick will come to India in January

Anil Kapoor, back in Mumbai after attending a screening of his new film
Slumdog Millionaire in one of the theatres in Los Angeles, shakes his head
in disbelief: "At the end of the show, there was a stunned silence which
then broke into a roaring applause."

Little surprise, the actor, who essays the role of a television show host,
is eagerly awaiting the release of the film, touted to go to the Oscars too,
in India. Unfortunately, Indian audiences will have to wait till January 23,
2009.

Adapted from Vikram Swarup's novel, Q&A, Slumdog Millionaire was released in
just 10 theatres in North America including in New York, Los Angeles, San
Francisco, Washington DC, Chicago and Toronto on November 12.Still, it has
so far grossed a total of $418,131, turning into one of the biggest hits of
2008.

What's more, the film will now expand into 10 more cities by this weekend
and will eventually play in 300 theatres across North America. The release
in the UK market will also take place early on January 9.

Not bad at all, especially for a film which was made for $13 million and
released after a lot of initial hiccups, especially when the original
backer, Warner Independent Pictures, shut down this year. Warner Brothers
later contracted with Fox Searchlight to distribute and market the movie in
North America.

The film, which essentially revolves around a slum boy from Mumbai who wins
prize money of a million dollars at a game show, has been doing the rounds
of many prestigious film festivals, including the London Film Festival and
the Toronto International Film Festival where it won the People's Choice
award.

Directed by Danny Boyle, who has made Sunshine, Trainspotting and 28 Days
Later, the film's shooting was anything but easy, says co-director Loveleen
Tandan. The film was required to be shot in the slums and streets of Mumbai,
something which was impossible to achieve especially as onlookers kept
stumbling into the camera frames.

With Dev Patel in the lead as an 18-year-old slum kid who is on the brink of
winning big prize money at a game show, the film also stars Indian actors
Irrfan Khan and Anil Kapoor. It has music by A R Rahman, with lyrics by
Gulzar and tracks sung by playback singer Sukhwinder. Interestingly, to lend
authenticity to the script, Slumdog Millionaire has large chunks of scenes
that are spoken in Hindi by different characters.

However, the one tiny criticism that has comes its way has been that Patel,
despite giving a fabulous performance, does have an accent which doesn't
with fit with his "slum" role. Still, the film continues to do well in
different sections of North America. Let's see if Indian viewers too like
it.

I get a feeling Ghai is following mani's alaipayuthey in which three tracks
were released separately again a month after the release of the movie. This
serves two objectives:
1. To see to it that music sales dont slump after few months
2. If a hit song is featured only in the movie, it may draw people to
theaters since it is not in cd

I hope they release it later. if not i feel bad for ARR

 having immense ego-clashes with each other.     So, when they themselves didnt have any problem/qualms about sharing music credts,  Why should A.R.Rahman, who is very well known for his ego-less & humble attitude , have any problem? i dont think he has such issues. he shared music credits with Anu Malik & Himesh Reshamiya & Ismail Darbar (not that they are as great as him..but still, Rahman didnt mind it) too recently, so why not his peers from tamil industry itself, where composers like Yuvan admire him.
     I really believe that A.Rahman is a very humble & non-egoistic person and this issue is never an issue for him to reject the film.So, why are we guys trying to find fault and raising a hue & cry about 
it.i dont think it is an insult at all. Movie field is a commercial area where lot of money goes in. i dont think someone would be spending lakhs and crores (to pay to other composers)
 just to insult one person..that too who is very level headed in his thinking. There are better ways to insult someone.     Lets stop over-imagining things and wish Rahman that he gives a good song which beats the compositions for his peer-group. infact, i am excited about this project if rahman agrees it, because it would be like a music compeition between all of them. 
  Just think about it guys.     The bottomline is: Rahman, being a down-to-earth person, mostly wouldnt find-fault/have no qualms with this issue. Why are We trying to do that?  
   lets ignore it and wait for more news and if he really accepts the film, lets wish that he comes with the best song in the album. Take it sportively guys!     Regards  Aakarsh.

hit the stands. The CD and cassette covers feature 
Ajith in varied get ups from Godfather. To his 
fans, they are simply superb! Going by the initial 
trends, the sales are above average. But then, 
that is the way with any Rahman blockbuster. The 
music shops such as Landmark, Music World, Connexions 
however say, the sales are good, standing next 
to Chandramukhi in the chart. Ajith must be euphoric 
indeed, looking at the way, his fans are going 
on in a promo campaign. It is hoped that Godfather 
will perform better than Paramasivan. If it does, 
it will be a second coming for Ajith.

Music recording for Hollywood movies have been done here. Times have
changed. People used to go to Hollywood to compose for tamil movies -
but now, music for hollywood movies are composed here! This also shows
the technological advancement... Hollywood is not something
great...Rahman shows us that even we can reach that standard!  
The new studio that he has set up in Chennai is definitely up to
hollywood standards. The re-recording for my movie NEW was done at
Autograph Studio, London. This new ARR studio is better than Autograph
studio in terms of technology and quality. It is God's boon to me that
I get to work with him.For Ah Aah, he composed all songs in Kodaikkanal. We got the lyrics ready for Varugirai Thodugirai
before Rahman started composing. He generally likes composing for
pre-written lyrics. Even for "Sakkarai Inikkira Sakkarai" from NEW, the
lyrics were written first by Vali and then Rahman composed the tune.
Rahman changed few words in those lyrics to suit the tune. This shows
his command over tamil language. The changes/additions he makes to
lyrics are very sweet and poetic. These are all just a few examples of
his brilliance. I sometimes wonder, why I shouldn't ask him to pen the
lyrics for a song!  
Tamil consists of 3 basic elements - literature, music and acting.
Though Rahman is an expert at the first two, he is very bad the the
last one.. Yes.. This man can't act. He always portrays his true self.  
If we dont like a tune that he has composed, we need not hesitate or
think too much - we can just speak to him openly about this. He'll say
"okay. i'll try"... But, if he is very confident about the tune, he'll
say "no.. we'll go with this.. this will work"... And, that one will
definitely become a super-hit!  The best example for this is "thottal poo malarum" song. Something really interesting happened...(contd...)The remaining portion of this will be available in the next issue of Kumudam. I will translate that too :)

Hi All,   I have ripped the BGMs of Kangalal Kaidhu Sei...
There are lots of classic pieces from ARR in this movie... I did not
rip it from DVD.. so these are not voice-less... I have removed the
voice in some places using Goldwave... Luckily in this movie, very few
of the BGMs were interrupted by dialogues :)))Have hosted it on my serverspace in my institute server... So, dont have to worry about rapidshare/megaupload problems :)  However, I can't keep there for long.. plz download fast!

How many times we have seen various sites discusssing GF release dates only for it to get postponed later...
How many websites have said that GF is facing financial pronlems??
My take is dont go by websites or ajith fans grps etc... If at all the
music and the movie release enjoy them... otherwise hopefully the movie
will get released in sometime (I had a 5 year wait for water and what a
gem it was!! )

Yaa I agree that the last hit of ARR in tamil was maybe Alaipayuthey...
Most of the movies from kannathil Muthamittal to Ah Aah had some gr8 music
but the films dint click... Same happened in hindi also... 
But please dont conclude anything based on awards... Swades was an alltime gr8...
It can win awrds for BGMs alone... but then the ppl dont recognise them...
For example KM was not even nominated for TN state awards but still won the national award...
For me ARR can give something which other MDs cannot.. can u name a
single MD who can do a Water?? I dont damn care about what ppl say
about him... or whether his albums are chartbusters...

You are right Vij, they are on different scale.  The vocals are rippedfrom the DVD as a BGM, and the music/interludes are from the original

I just love playing with Rahman's music.  I do not re-mix, I do notadd anything new, but play around with his own music.  Ask anyone whohas ever edited or mixed Rahman sir's music, it is just an amazing
experience, it shows the genius of Rahman... how he layers things, theeffects etc.  You know the reason why there are not many Rahmanre-mixes out there...because he makes it impossible.  He layers music,vocals, and
 interludes such that it is impossible to isolate oneparticular segment.  You are either missing the beginning or missingthe end... for example, in Yeh jo des hai tera.. the 2ndanthra..starts with "Yeh pal hai wohi..", notice how vocals start
playing before the interlude ends, that makes it impossible to isolatethe interlude or vocals completely, makes the job much harder for the"re-mixer".  His patterns are way to complex.  I'm currently working
on extracting all the interludes from his song, as I believe each ofhis interludes are master-pieces in them themselves.The most accomplished mix I have ever done is the Anbai Sugamainterludes.  I combined Anbai Sugama w/ Azhage Sugama, and then there
is a layering with Sadhna's voice and the (violin ?), which is notthere in the original song, but it sounds like Rahman himself did it.For the first and the only time I felt like I connected with Rahman,I predicted
 exactly what Rahman would have done.  I can't express thejoy from creating that mix and the joy of sharing it with you guys.Thanks.p.s. It is in the briefcase, for anyone that is interested.Regards.

needed more money for creatind the studio... now that he has finished
with the studio and that his period movies havent worked well... he

The newspaper only says "shankar did 7 films with ARR but missed him in
anniyan. So Shankar is particular about ARR doin this project. Since
ARR is free from international commitments for the next 2 months, he is
likely to accept Shankar's movie"

Still nothing is confirmed. But having missed Chandramukhi n Anniyan (both were offered to him first)
i feel ARR should accept this... Vijay / Rano / Gopal... Plz confirm!!

I laud ur efforts in collecting info on the t-shirt delivery etc.
Ur points are totally valid. Here are a few suggestions.

1. For people within india, ask them to do an account transfer first. then u can courier those ppl who have transffered money.
2. For people staying abroad, we can ask them to give some contacts of
their relatives in india (who wudnt mind couriering it to the
respective country). Again transfer of money is mandatory.

such case. the surplus charges on us will be """costof the T-Shirt + Courier Changes + Bounce BackCharges.""" .And again we have to work on dispatchingthe material to some others if they need it.

I dont agree with u. I agree that Rahman has lost market value... but lest c why...
1. In 1990 - 2000 music piracy / mp3 was very less so the cds sold well
2. Past 2000 was the era of remixes where the public liked any song with some loud beats
3. as krishna said ppl like HJ made use of ARR's entry into Hindi n occupied the tamil music industry!

now the most important when rahman took over from IR... he brought
new music into tamil film industry. The fact that he could create
something like Roja wayback in 1992 itself is an acheivement
but then now after so many years u know what to expect from Rahman...
For example if i say a Rahman melody u can imagine some soft
percussions in that

But then even after 14 years he invents new sounds (with or without
tech) and keeps us guessing as to how his next album will be. Thats the
very reason that when IR went down after arrival of AR, AR's market is
still the same after the arrival of so many mds... AR can adapt to
peoples intrest In fact AR's stature has grown beyond limits
because of the period movies that hes done offlate

The
pair of S J Suryah and A R Rehman did not exactly create magic in New.
But the songs were chart-busters as they had what the in-crowd was
looking for --- plenty of rhythms sugar-coated with melody.
Anbe Aaruyire too falls into the category. As this
is Rehman's first Tamil film after a long gap, the expectations were
high. The master of modern melodies has not disappointed. But Rehman
seems to have played safe by giving what the director asked of him
rather than try and give his own style of music. The thing that appeals
to you the most is the splendid orchestration as opposed to the
essential tunes. The six songs, though not spectacular, are hum-worthy.
1) Anbe Aaruyire
It begins with weighted rhythms that Rehman is so
famous for. Just the kind of going to announce the master's comeback.
The vocals are also Rehman's. Considering the robust rhythms, his voice
comes across slightly muted. But he carries on manfully. The song has a
catchy ditty and an agreeable melody.
2) Mayilirage
The Tavil percussion lands soothingly on your ear.
It is deep and resonant. And quickly Naresh Iyer (he comes across as a
cross between Harish Raghavendra and Unni Krishnan) and Madhushiri
(sounds almost like Sadhana) take over. Their sweetness swathes
comfortably like a snug blanket on a wintry night. The word Mayilirage
(Peacock's plumes) are just apt --- you feel like being caressed by it
after listening to this number.
3) Varugiraai
With
Hariharan and Chitra in the front, the song promises a lot. The song
deals with the pangs of love. The high-pitched orbit of the tune makes
it a difficult composition. Again Rehman shows his originality in
mixing and instrumentation.
4) Thigu, Thigu
The heavy rhythms start almost blazingly. Sadhana
Sargam, of course, has the voice and versatility to match them. There
is more than a touch of Arabian lilt and Persian Ghazal in the
quintessence. The lyrics (Vaali) sound slightly bawdy.
5) Thazhuviudu
Shreya starts off in a husky manner. But by the time
SPB joins her, the song is well and truly into unique staccato pattern.
There is no song as we traditionally know it. Perhaps it is a
situational number. There is nothing redeeming, except the Rehman's
stunning instrumentation.
6) Maramkothiye
It may be the pick of the album. The rap beginning
(by Bilaze) may be on expected lines. But the take off is original and
acceptable. Shankar Mahadevan sings well within himself and does not go
for the jugular. The female voices of Shalini, Vasundaradass provide
the right covering for such a number. The sci-fi interludes add a
unique allure to the whole rendition.
On the whole, Rehman has shown that he has lost none
of his touch and feel. So pretenders had better move over. The master
is back.

Rahman is doin a commercial tamil flick after a year
Between new and ah aah, all his albums had the "growing" effect i.e u
may not like much after the first hearing but after 10 hearings u might
say "this is the best from Rahman"...
but ah aah will not have the growing effect... it will stick after the first hearing...
but very happy to hear tamil from arr after a year!!

ForgottenHero. "It's become Bose: The Forgotten Music," jokes Rehman. "I 
hadworked really hard on the music. But it all totaled to zero finally. 
But after Zubeida and Bose I'm doing another film with Shyam 
Benegal.It's a full-on musical. But please, no more period films for the 
timebeing." Having had his fill of blasts from the past, Rahman is now 
looking at a more contemporary kind of music. "All my 
Hindiassignments at the moment including Rakesh Mehra's Rang De 
Basantiand Abbas Tyrewala's romantic film are contemporary subjects. 
I'mquite done with period films for now. I think Mangal Pandey would be 
last film of that ilk." Righfully proud of his compositions in 
thejust-released Mangal Pandey, Rahman reveals how he had been

Urges A R Rahman, currently unhappy with his treatment in BollywoodSubhash K JhaNot that A R Rahman sounds bitter. And not that he can afford to,given his status of one of the leading Asian composers of his times.
But Rahman is rather uncertain about his future in Hindi films.Reason? "Too many period films in Hindi. Take the case of 1947:Earth, Zubeida, Lagaan, The Legend Of Bhagat Singh, Water, Bose: TheForgotten Hero, Kisna among the many. I've worked hard on each of
these themes. But the end-result hasn't been worth it. The songs wereeither pushed into the background or not used at all…or worse still,used badly. I feel very frustrated by this. But what can I do?Composing tunes is my job. How they are used isn't up to me." Rahman
seems unhappy with the way Subhash Ghai used his track 'Hum hain isspal yahan' in Kisna. "Though it was a love ballad it wasn't sung bythe lead pair at all. It was placed in the background. That killed
the song's impact." But the worst experience was Bose: The ForgottenHero. "It's become Bose: The Forgotten Music," jokes Rehman. "I hadworked really hard on the music. But it all totaled to zero finally.
But after Zubeida and Bose I'm doing another film with Shyam Benegal.It's a full-on musical. But please, no more period films for the timebeing." Having had his fill of blasts from the past, Rahman is now
looking at a more contemporary kind of music. "All my Hindiassignments at the moment including Rakesh Mehra's Rang De Basantiand Abbas Tyrewala's romantic film are contemporary subjects. I'mquite done with period films for now. I think Mangal Pandey would be
last film of that ilk." Righfully proud of his compositions in thejust-released Mangal Pandey, Rahman reveals how he had been offeredthree film about freedom fighters/warriors including Roland Joffe's
The Invaders. "But I finally chose Mangal Pandey. Yeah, the fact thatAamir Khan was in it did influence my decision. Aamir and I reallygelled well during Lagaan. In fact I'm really proud of my work inLagaan and 1947-Earth which also starred Aamir." Going on to speak
about the second part of Deepa Mehta's trilogy, the third part Wateris ready. It's the first project where Rahman has done the songs andnot the background music. "I moved away because of the controversies
surrounding the film. What's the point of creating music for aproject that makes some people unhappy? But I saw Water recently. Andit took my breath away." Has there been anything in Hindi music thatRahman has liked lately? "Yeah I like M M Kreem's music. His `Jadoo
hai nasha hai' in Jism was a surprise. And I like a couple ofPakistani songs which have been used in Hindi films like Murderrecently."* What's the point of creating music for a project that makes some

Hi Ashok...
Ive listened to rising thrice now... and so far the only songs that i liked are Mangal n Maula...
The songs may not be good hearing... but along with the visuals will make an impact i guess...
These are songs for specific situations... 
But whether or not rising is a hit... take my word any other MD cudnt have even come close to this

honest review.  At first I also just couldnt like the songs but on
2-3 listenings i think it is awesome. The instrumentation of the songs
are fabulous. Holire is the only song which i think is not very good.
but it is indeed good song.
 
Just hear Takey Takey That is a very new approach to the song.

person...I am too small for that...I am only talking in neutral sensetaking the things as they are and not the fantasy of my mind.We have not seen the movie, and may be the song will perfectly blend with the film, but only the songs doesnt stand alone, like his earlier

The most consistent aspect of A R Rahman's music is its gradual appreciation. 
There
is a smug assuredness to his composition, the maestro requiring
familiarity from his listeners. One needs to be used to his music.Ketan Mehta's highly awaited Mangal Pandey: The Rising
 demands a level of concentration and discipline from its listener. Woven in the rustic fabric of Javed Akhtar's eloquent 
metaphors, Kailash Kher's bouncy singing and Rahman's inspiring notes, Mangal mangal is the album's lead track
. It has three versions: Mangal, Aatma and Agni.These three pieces expound on the three states of a 
revolutionary's mind, drawing a parallel between the rising sun and Mangal Pandey. The first articulates the simplicity, beauty and purity of daybreak, 
when the revolutionary is born. Then comes the aggressive Agni, where he emerges forth. In Aatma, he graduates 
to a martyr, and is met by approval and applause.Rahman says the 'mujra song' was his most difficult 
composition. But the effort pays off richly. Main vari vari, with its splendid orchestra boasts of overwhelming classical character. Kavita 
Krishnamurthy's curvy crooning is suitably seductive and ably supported by Reena Bharadwaj's subdued refrains.
Heavy on arrangement, the playfulness of Holi re's verse does not tread on catchy grounds. In the end, it's just a boisterous piece of music, which expresses 
symphonic chaos, but lacks the rhythm of mischief. Secrets of the heart are passionately revealed in Rasiya re
. Uniquely, this is intense, not dark and flirtatious, not flippant. Be warned though, Rasiya is not easy listening. It will try your patience. Give it some 
space to grow on you.Life is a bustling market with a price tag for everything. So goes Javed Akhtar's simile in 
Takey takey. Sardonic and scoffing, Takey takes on the dishonest society. It is more of a visual song that tries to make a point 
without really being entertaining.Emotions run high in Rahman's penetrating rendition of the magnificently staged 
Al maddath maula. Once the album gets over, there is a lingering feeling of disappointment. There are times when the soundtrack 
rises to escalating heights only to limp awkwardly later. Though the score is monumental, it is not Rahman at his best.
