Re: RRRChive
Hi Mark, Thank you for the input. You can also add parameters on the command line that completely overrides anything in the config: rrrchive --qual='2' = \Demo\ rrr.cfg (Note that this example is complicated, as it contains both spaces, single- and double-quotes that needs to be taken into account.) Also note that if you want to do an wild-card match, you need to double your %-signs: qual = ('8' LIKE %%twinkie%%) Another important thing is the transfertype, that will usually not be SYNCTOTARGET if you have complex, and especially date-based, qualifications. You would then probably use transfertype=COPY instead. Best Regards - Misi, RRR AB, http://www.rrr.se (ARSList MVP 2011) Products from RRR Scandinavia (Best R.O.I. Bitmap indexes vs Regular indexes
Good Morning List, I am a Remedy guy, not a DB guy,.. so I am looking for some help from the DBAs on the List. Recently, our DBA ran a performance analysis of our Remedy DB and came back with 9 fields that are recommended for indexing. 3 of those fields are recommended to have bitmap indexes. This cannot be created in Remedy. So we can either create these as standard indexes instead of bitmap, so that the Remedy system is aware of them, (this is what BMC is recommending). OR, we can have the DBA create them at the DB level as the recommended bitmap indexes, but then Remedy is not aware they exist. BMC is saying that bitmap indexes have a downfall in that they take a lot longer to write to. Our DBA is saying that we will not get the searching performance improvement we seek unless we use the bitmap indexes. Any thoughts from the pros? Do some research and test it in dev before turning on this option in production. Early this year we turned on this option hoping to do some usage statistics. However it seems there is a bug in that feature, it completely hosed our remedy system and no body could login. BMC support suggested removing this option after that our servers became useful again. Re: Other CMDB products
Hi Paul, Just to clarify, you are talking about the BMC ITSM products? The CMDB is included if you have any of the ITSM products installed (Service Desk, Change Management, Asset Management). The CMDB is considered a core piece of all of these (and becoming even more with each release). If you are talking about Asset Management, that is another story and would require licenses. Not sure I understand your comment. BMC Atrium CMDB comes for free with Remedy ITSM apps now (it's natively included in the same database). Re: Bitmap indexes vs Regular indexes
Hi Ron, My thoughts are these bitmap indexes should be created at the database level, so that Remedy is not aware of them, because all Remedy created indexes are standard (i.e. b-tree indexes). After these indexes are created, the DBA can profile the overall performance again, to see if the expected benefits are there. Otherwise, the bitmap indexes should be dropped and the indexes created as b-tree through Remedy. When you migrate the forms between environments, you need to remember to re-create these bitmap indexes at the database level. What BMC is saying that bitmap indexes are longer to write depends on the level of concurrency on the update of the bitmap index: it may or may not be an issue in your environment take a look at this article here: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/articles/sharma-indexes-093638.html Guillaume From: Action Request System discussion list(ARSList) [arslist@ARSLIST.ORG] on behalf of Ron Tavares [ron.tava...@gmail.com] Sent: Tuesday, October 04, 2011 9:10 AM To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Subject: Bitmap indexes vs Regular indexes ** Good Morning List, I am a Remedy guy, not a DB guy,.. so I am looking for some help from the DBAs on the List. Re: Bitmap indexes vs Regular indexes
Well, the immediate question is best answered by whether fast submits or fast searches are more important. That's a form-by-form argument, and you have to balance your users' needs and potential SLAs for performance in there as you see best. The longer-term question is about the viability of having your indexes maintained at the DB level. I think if I were having some there, I would want to have them all there - if that made sense from a performance standpoint, and if they could be maintained in sync with application customizations. That's a lot of work - is the potential gain worth it? Guillaume's advice is sound. Re: Bitmap indexes vs Regular indexes
Also keep in mind that certain form modifications will drop those indexes. If that happens you will need to recreate the indexes. It used to be that the alteration of the precision of a decimal field, or the modification of a currency field would trigger this. Not sure if this still holds true. Re: Drop Table AR0float
I could comment on the drop table issue, but I think Misi or someone will probably be able to do so more intelligently than I, and I don't think that is causing your problem anyway. The thing that jumped out at me was your Entry IDs, which were in seven or eight non-zero digits (3 million+/18 million+). How many records do you still have in those tables? At high row counts, deleting a record, as was tracked in the /DELETE FROM H25 WHERE entryId = '8337604' or DELETE FROM H31 WHERE entryId = '00018333725' statements, is something that causes the indexes on those forms to be re-shuffled. That can take some time, especially if you have very high row counts. Get Entry + Set Fields from another form's Set Fields operation
ARS 7.5 P7 I have a form (formA) that sets a field on Get Entry. This works great when looking at records or running reports on FormA, even if the field is display only. Is there any reason why this filter wouldn't execute from another form (FormB) performing a Set Fields operation of its own and using FormA as its data source? Checking Filter logs, the GET event doesn't get triggered for FormA when FormB is doing its Set Fields operation, so I don't think this is a phasing or execution order problem. I cannot find in the documentation whether this is expected behavior. A little background, I want to pull in one piece of Customer data from an external DB (cell phone #) but make sure that it is fresh whenever it is displayed. So, I have a display only field on FormA that is set on Get Entry using a SQL command data source. This works great when viewing FormA. Now I want to make that visible on FormB. I can't. I could setup the same DB Set Fields call on FormB, but I would need the same key fields on that form to do the same SQL command. I could also bring in the external DB as a view form and join that to FormA and then go from there, but it seems more complex than it needs to be for just this one piece of data. Re: Bitmap indexes vs Regular indexes
Unfortunately, no. The ardb.conf takes values to append to the related DDL statement. The difference in the DDL to create an index, versus a bitmap index, does not fit this mold. For example: CREATE INDEX emp_bitmap_idx ON index_demo (gender); CREATE BITMAP INDEX emp_bitmap_idx ON index_demo (gender); The values in ardb.conf are appended to the end of the DDL, which let you do things like this: Form: index_demo Clause: clause Index { Id: gender Clause: clause } Which results in some pseudo DDL sql like this: CREATE INDEX emp_bitmap_idx ON index_demo (gender) *TABLESPACE users*; Axton Grams On Tue, Oct 4, 2011 at 12:45 PM, Garrison, Sean (Norcross) sean.garri...@fiserv.com wrote: ** Is there a way to accomplish what he is asking for by configuring the ardb.conf file? Re: Get Entry + Set Fields from another form's Set Fields operation
Hi, There are three types of operations that gets data I guess. 1. GetEntry in variouse ways, that triggers get-entry-fitlers 2. GetListEntryWithFields and some alternatives that do NOT trigger the get-entry-filters 3. Internal Filter Set Fields that do NOT trigger the get-entry-filters In you case, I would suggest that you create a service-call instead, that can leverage anything you want on FormA. Read the Workflo Guide if you are not sure how the Service-action works. It is really very simple to use. Re: Get Entry + Set Fields from another form's Set Fields operation
It is expected behaviour. A set fields filter action is NOT a get fields. So, to do what you want, you'll need to - do a GetFields and add the fields you need to your formB and to your push fields or - (better) add a condition on the get fields filter such as any of the fields you are setting are null and fire the filter on both get fields and modify. Listers; We're back... And the solution was what I expected, the path for the Java version, but I wasn't aware on how Microsoft uses the ENV variables. For the record and as a knowledge for everyone. 1. Do not set up automatic JAVA (JDK or JRE) upgrades, be sure that they're turned of and even any sysadmin policies does not include them, unless the ARS owner is aware of. 2. Using JAVA_HOME and JRE_HOME env is not usefull, since Remedy reads the java variables from Path if no jre or jdk env is defined on it, the JAVA_HOME and JRE_HOME will be the source. Sympthoms: 1.- Java VM reading errors on arerror.log. 2.- Slow performance for User tool 3.- Web Services and Authentication errors. What to do: 1.- Have at least one jdk identified as supported on the server. 2.- Modify Path variable to ONLY use this defined jdk Thanks everybody for the ideas and comments appreciate having this good fellowship :) Cheers Hugo Ruesga Software Development Advisor US 972.577.7000 x 332.3868 MX +52 (33) 3332.3868 P Please consider the environment before printing this email The information contained in and transferred with this electronic message is intended only for the recipient(s) designated above, it is protected by law and it may contain information which is privileged and confidential. Re: Drop Table AR0float
I would check all the searches that happen through workflow (set field if and push field if conditions) and otherwise (table field qualifications on tables that load on window open when the home page is opened). I’ll lay a bet some of the searches on these are using fields that are not indexed in the where clause.. This may have happened with the customizations done to the product as I think the out of the box version of the apps have refined their searches for good performance on ITSM 6.. I have seen this problem with the out of the box ITSP product that had a number of searches that were not using indexed fields in the where clause... It worked great for a while until their record counts in the customer database started increasing.. Another problem that could be a possible problem is if the searches are on join forms that have millions of records in them.. Remedy join form view descriptions in some cases is not the optimal, from the performance standpoint. This is because union joins are not supported. If you can rewrite these join form views as union joins, it will improve searches on that. Mind you, this is not recommended by BMC Support. So if the join form underlying view definition is one of the problem, understand that trying to fix it is not a recommended BMC solution. You would need to do it at your own risk. The good news is that there is not much of a risk trying to do this. The only risk is that every time the join form view definition changes because of changes in the underlying primary and secondary table definition, your union view you create will be deleted, and replaced by the AR System generated view. So you would need to save a copy of the script/sql that generates that customized view to regenerate it on demand. Also it would be a good idea to save a copy of the original view, to replace the customized with the original at the time of patching the application – just in case – although technically this is not necessary.. The advantage of using a union view is that when you are talking about millions of records in either or both the primary and secondary form, a query to a union view would fetch the results probably 10 or 20 or more times faster than a query to the view that is generated OTB by an AR System join. Re: Get Entry + Set Fields from another form's Set Fields operation
Thank you both for the responses. I've always skipped over the service action docs thinking it was web services-- I'm trying the service action first since I don't want to have to modify any records or do any push fields operations, if I can avoid it. I can't get it to work so far, though. FormA: Display only FieldA, Set Fields Filter triggers on Get Entry and (now) Service. The data is retrieved from SQL command. (this part works when you are looking at FormA) FormB: Display only FieldB. Service Action Filter triggers on Get Entry. Service Action is setup to use FormA as the source. Input mapping is my join on UserID to retrieve FieldA. Output mapping is the data returned, FieldA to FieldB. I've tried Request ID: blank and Request Id: Request ID on the Service Action as well. No difference. I'm sure I'm missing something because it doesn't seem to do anything at all. I've tried adding a Set Fields after the Service Action that sets the field from Current Transaction to be FieldB=FieldB (grasping at straws). I keep finding references to using Service Action in Active Links. I'm using Filters only, but the documentation seems to suggest it doesn't matter. Thanks for any advice. I will keep looking for some examples too. Brien On 10/4/2011 11:30 AM, Misi Mladoniczky wrote: Hi, There are three types of operations that gets data I guess. 1. Re: Get Entry + Set Fields from another form's Set Fields operation
Hi, I have mostly used services without loading the request, but to be able to perform the normal filters of the get-entry, you would be required to pass the Request ID of FormA. In other words, you may need a Set-Fields prior to the Service-call to retrieve that Request ID. This should make sure that the FormA-fields are loaded from the database before your Service-/GetEntry-filter is run. Finally use the output-mapping to get the results back. Re: Separation of DB and Application server
Good move.. Never host the DB Server on the same box as the Application Server... Apart from maintaining the same database name, database user name and password, all you need to do is point to the remote DB once you set it up on a remote machine by editing the ar.cfg file.. Obviously in order to do this you would need to restart the AR System server so it has to be done when the least users are connected to it, after informing them of a expected short outage. The outage should last no more than an hour or so, depending on the size of the DB that you would need to backup and restore to a remote instance.. If the DB is using windows authentication, make sure you replicate that correctly on the remote instance, else authentication to the DB will fail..
