states: On a page of neatly written entries and one illegible entry, yours
will be the illegible one.

Bottom right margin: Looks like they had a certificate issued on 22 Jan

Left margin 1st one: Looks like they had a certificate issued 2 July 1841
Left margin 2nd one: Looks like they had a certificate issued 4 Dec 1830.

Alexis de Medeiros is my 6th great grandfather. He married Antonia Oliveira
Carvalho in Bretanha on June 23, 1717. That record is in the marriages book of
that period, however, it is out of place.

Aleixo's parents are Manuel Alves or Alvares Calvo and Maria de Oliveira.

Antonia's parents are Manuel de Oliveira and Maria de Oliveira Carvalho

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Help filling in some blanks Bernardino, of Soares and Figueiredo

2016-12-10 Thread linda
Hi,

I have some of the same names (Souza de Figueredo, Meneses, Soares and
Curvelo/Corvelho) in one section of my tree (Villa do Porto, Santa Maria),
and I think we probably connect a generation or two back from this record.
Perhaps we already chatted about that a while back?

Anyway, this is how I read the record:

viuva moradores nesta
freguezia, que comigo aSignaram dia, mes, e anno Supra

Vigr.o Fran.co d[e] Miranda
[and two witness signatures]

This is how I interpret it (sections which you wrote "???" I've put into
red):

Bernardino son of Jose Soares, and of his wife Dona Isabel
de Figueiredo natives of this Parish of Glorious Santa Barbara
of this island of Santa Maria [and] living in the place [neighborhood] of
the North, born
on the 9th of the month of July of 1758
He was baptised on the 16th of the same month and year by me Fran-
cisco de Miranda vicar of this Parish in which his parents reside;
[the] Godfather was Ignacio de Souza de Figueiredo [a] single man [and the]
son of
Alfares Joao Soares, who God has [i.e., who is deceased] and [the]
Godmother [was] Dona
Francisca dos Reis daughter of the same Alfares [Joao Soares de Figueiredo] a
single woman;
[the] witnesses [were] the Captain Mauricio de Souza Meneses, Manoel
Joze [Corvelho], single son of Marianna [Corvelha] widow [who both] live in
this
village, who signed [this document] along with me [on the] above day month
and year

Vicar Francisco de Miranda

The first signature is probably Mauricio de Souza Meneses
Manoel Jose Corvelho

Coelho vs. Corvelho: In the body of the record, the name in question looks
like "Coelho" to me too, but I believe it's more likely to be Corvelho.
The witness signature looks more like Corvelho to me, and it's a name
that's very common in Santa Barbara parish.

hope this helps,

:)

According to the marriage record Victoria is from Agua Retorto as is her

look for her baptism after I found the parents' marriage in the same place.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Help reading two words...

2016-12-04 Thread linda

For the father's occupation, I see "siareiro", a grain grower-- most likely
wheat, I believe. Santa Maria has the driest climate of the islands, and
is the only one that had any significant amount of cereal production.

The paternal grandfather's first name looks like "Simplicio" to me, but
I've never seen that before and don't know if it could be right or not.

hope that helps,

Linda

 Yes, there
is a problem. Maria is not to be found on the prescribed
date of Nov 30- 1793. And her parents are not in the
expected period. Suggest you look in Povoacao, then
Nordestinho and Achada. Jose de Aguiar is from Achada and
married in Nordestinho. But frankly, I suspect error on part
 of priest.
 Manuel de
 Aguiar, bap 22
 May 1788 in
 Nordestinho, res Faial da Terra.
He was the son of 4. Jose de Aguiar and 5. Josefa
Pereira.  He married 3. Maria de Pimentel de

 1812 in Faial da
 Terra, NS da Graca.

 Maria de

She was the daughter of 6. Antonio de Pimentel and

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] NEED HELP WITH MARRIAGE TRANSLATION

2016-12-03 Thread JR
Yes, there is a problem. Maria is not to be found on the prescribed date of
Nov 30- 1793. And her parents are not in the expected period. Suggest you
look in Povoacao, then Nordestinho and Achada. Jose de Aguiar is from
Achada and married in Nordestinho. But frankly, I suspect error on part of
priest.

*Manuel de Aguiar,* bap 22 May 1788 in Nordestinho, res Faial da Terra. He
was the son of *4. Jose de Aguiar* and *5. Josefa Pereira*. He married *3.
Maria de Pimentel de Resendes* 02 Dec 1812 in Faial da Terra, NS da Graca.

M*aria de Pimentel de Resendes,* bap 30 Nov 1793 in Faial da Terra, NS da
Graca. She was the daughter of *6. Antonio de Pimentel* and *7. Antonia
Marquia ? [probably Margarida or Marques*.]

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Help with Obito - Sebastiao Mendonca, of Sao Mateus, Pico

2016-11-30 Thread Sue Q
This priest's handwriting is very difficult to read so I can't be of much
help, but I do believe the name is Sebastiao de Mendoca, married man,
although I can see where it named his wife. I think at the end of the 3rd
line, extending into the 4th, it says he received the sacraments probabaly
of the inferm, but I can't make it out clearly. It also says in the 4th
line that he left a will but I can't make out what all the names are and
what they mean. I believe what follows below may be listing what he left. I
see 120 somethings for his soul, thousand reis He was interred in the
church of the Apostolo de São Mateus, where he was a parishioner. Very
difficult to read. So sorry I can't be of more help but I'm sure someone
else can add a lot more. Good luck!

2016-11-22 Thread linda
Hi Sue,

I see "...os Divinos Sacrament.os Ig.r ser quase repentina sua morte..."
and with google translate's help, I interpret that as "the Divine
Sacraments of the Church [because] her death was nearly sudden". I can't
transliterate the second section that you asked about, but my impression is
it says something along the lines of: "she was accompanied by
[someone/representative] from the town, from the Reverendo Collegio of the
Matriz"--that is,someone from one of the lay brotherhoods whose members
participated in religious ceremonies went with her body as it was carried
to her grave. Perhaps someone with a better eye can confirm or correct
this.

hope that helps,

Linda

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Need help reading this one.

2016-11-20 Thread Tish M
Parents and child's name are correct
The mother is from Santa Barbara
Paternal grandmother: Maria de Jesus
born on 21 Dec 1805
Hint:
Look at the book you are working from if you are having trouble reading the
year. You will see it only goes to 1810 so the birth can't be 1850.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Need help reading this one.

2016-11-19 Thread JR
Well done. The year, however, is 1805 not 1850. If ever in doubt just look
at records before or after to confirm the correct month or year. Note also
you are the book of 1797-1810.

Paternal grandma is Maria de Jesus. The rest is right. I don't know why he
calls the church Glorious Santa Barbara. Maybe he had too much vinho. :)

 Yes,
that's her baptism and obit record.  The 1816 is a
certification.  It means her birth record was requested and
certified in 1816.  It could be for many reasons.  a)
inheritance b) a child or husband needed proof of birth.
Should you find this certification on her husband's
birth record or one of their children, you will know it was
an inheritance or other legal matters. If they owned a home
together and he remarried, there would be a need to set the
 records straight...etc.
Nothing in the obit refers to
his remarriage.  It does say her age was 38 years old. If
you suspect he did marry again, you can start searching
shortly after her death date, especially if there were
children, a man would usually remarry shortly after.  It
may not be in the same town though, which makes it hard to
 find.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Help with residence on record 1861

2016-11-14 Thread IslandRoutes
JR,
Thanks! I figured it was more of a descriptive of a neighborhood, but I
wanted to be sure.

I am trying to figure out what happened to my gr gr grandparents, Jacintho
Pacheco and Anna Jacinta de Mello, between 1856 (married in FVC) and 1863
(2nd son born in Achada). The people in the baptismal are the Jacintho's
relatives. I've been hoping to find a clue as to where they might have
gone for those 7 years...and knowing there were relatives in another
village or island might have been something to look into.

Another dead end...on to the next record :)

Thanks for your help!

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Help with residence on record 1861

2016-11-14 Thread JR
I should say, Pico in this case, is in all likelihood a neighbourhood in,
or just outside Fenais da Ajuda. There is a mountain south of Fenais called
"Senhora do Pico." And there is a very small village called "Pico de
Pedro", located far west near Rabo de Peixe.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Need help with the date of death please

Need help reading some of this Obit. It’s the first whole one on the left
side: Antonio. I read that he is the son of Jose Francisco de Faria and
Theresa Francisca. Born in Pedro Miguel, etc., etc. He is one year old, more
or less. Died the 2nd day ?? of the month of May 185?.

So, I’m not sure of the day he died nor the exact year. Also, if anyone can
translate the sentence after the date, that would be great.

Thank you in advance for your help,

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] NEED HELP WITH TRANSLATIONS

2016-11-03 Thread Margaret Vicente
Hi Carmen,

According to these records, none of these children were adopted or
"perfilhadas" because if they were it would be annotated on the record with
the parents names or point to another book with that information.

The word after Inacia (Ignacia) Maria is "Joaquina" the full name is Inacia
Maria Joaquina

You're welcome,

Margaret

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Translation help? Baptism Francisco Arruda

2016-11-01 Thread Cheri Mello
Chelly, I don't know how "whaler" was spelled (or misspelled) back then,
but today it's "baleeiro." He was a whaler.

As to Maria, it says they are from the parish Senhora da Graça, "logar" of
Faial...If she was from the island of Faial, they would have said "ilha de
Faial". Lugar (modern spelling) is the place. So technically, they are from
the parish of Nossa Senhora da Graça, in the freguesia (village) of Faial
da Terra. The priest was saving space and ink by dropping certain words, I
guess.

A listing of Sao Miguel churches and their towns is here:
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~azrwgw/maps-churches-and-villages/sao-miguel.html

Francisco's baptismthe word you are looking for when the parents are
married is "recebidos." The literal translation is "received." Line 11 from
the BOTTOM says, "natives, received, parishioners, and living in the
something of this freguesia. So they are from Porto Formoso. You're going
to have to look for a Jose Anybody (and look real hard at the Joao too so
you aren't misreading) married to a Roza Anybody. If that doesn't work,
start collecting Francisco's siblings working back in time. When you go
about 4 years with no kids, go back to kid 1 and start looking for the
marriage the day before. Unless you see that the first couple of kids were
born out of wedlock, then you'll find the marriage sandwiched between a
couple of kids.

You're doing quite well if you are getting the names and dates already!
You'll be able to help others soon!

2016-11-01 Thread Chelly
Thank you! That's good to know!
Specifically looking into Francisco's marriage record. His occupation looks
like, balieiro. I've tried several different spellings and nothing
translates. The same phrase also appears next to their first witness.

The first line at top of the second page of their marriage record, does
that state the wife, Maria, and wife's family were from the island of Faial?

On Francisco's baptism record, does it state where his parents are living
or marriage location specifically? I am looking for the place his parents
where married so I can locate their marriage record. I know he was baptized
in Ribeira Grande Porto Formoso but I have looked through years of marriage
records with no sign of the names of his parents.

I'm very green at this, I greatly apologize. I'm sure these are
really silly and annoying questions!
Many thanks!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: help finding marriage record rabo de peixe

2016-10-26 Thread JR
I found in Rabo de Peixe a second Manuel Pereira Bicho cc Maria da Costa,
Feb 4- 1692; He is filho de Francisco Pereira and Isabel Vieira nats de
Fenais de Luz; She is filha de Pai Nao Sabido and Vitoria Furtado nat de
Rabo de Peixe.

I think it is reasonable to assume this Manuel Pereira Bicho is in the same
family and most likely is the brother of your Antonio Pereira Bicho. This
makes Francisco Pereira and Isabel Vieira the parents of said Antonio
Pereira. If you really want to firm it up more, look for some children, and
that should help solidify the relationships.

Amy, you have the correct obit record for it states her husband's full name.

You will find as you continue searches that the obits' records give
approximate ages. Watch for the words (more or less).

Also found Anna de Benevides death in 1749, which gives an age of around

States he was 50 years old, so born around 1688.

I looked for his baptism but could not find it, fenais da luz seems to be
missing the dates I need. I think it jumped from 1686 to 1693?

2016-10-25 Thread JR
Try Capelas or Ribeira Grande. Ana de Benevides is from Calhetas which was
then part of the freguesia of Rabo de Peixe. And I notice the godparents
are from Pico de Pedra, which is a very small village just north of, and in
between Rabo de Peixe and Calhetas.

His name is Bixo, which is indeed Bicho from Fenais da Luz.

If you can't find marriage, I think you should look for the baptism of the
parents. There are not that many Pereira's or Benevides that would make
this search that difficult. They married just before 1715, so look about 25
years before this date and go forward. Then back from this date if not
found.

I have only heard of one other case of 2 living boys with the same name. I

Jose, bottom right.  Is the baptismal date 28 Mar 1887 and birth date 20 Mar
1887?  I also have his obit 4 May 1890, 3 yrs. old.
It is curious because there is another Jose, my grandfather born 11 May 1883,
same parents and grandparents. (I have his birth record.)  Why would they name
a son born after a still living son with the same name?  I know many girls are
named Maria and then go by their second name but; I wasn’t aware that it
happened with sons as well.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] NEED HELP

2016-10-20 Thread 'Philippe GARNIER' via Azores Genealogy
Hi Carmen,
"why is his last name soares when his father's is da costa".
His parents are Antonio da Costa and Umbelina Francisca. The parents of
Umbelina Francisca are Francisco Soares e Maria de Matos. O "Soares" is from
his maternal grandfather. The composed surname of the portugues people is, the
more frequently, an association of a paternal surname and a maternal surname.
It's very frequent that a child have not the same surname of the father. The
complete surname of Jacinto is "Soares Oliveira". Then, probably, there is an
"Oliveira" in the ascendants of Antonio da Costa.
The godfather of Maria and the "procurador" of the madrinha are children of
Antonio Soares Rebelo. Probably from the Francisco Soares family. The godfather
of Teresa is Francisco Soares son fo Francisca Soares. Probably the brother of
Umbelina Francisca. And the "procurador" of the godmother is José Soares.
Probably from the Francisco Soares family. The dois  "procuradores" of the
godparents of Antonio are"Francisco Soares de Oliveira priest", probably a
parent of Jacinto Soares Oliveira, and João Francisco Soares, Probably from the
Francisco Soares family. Philippe Garnier Paris - France

 marriage of jacinto
soares to jacinta rosa in 1821 guerabina?

YOU GOT THE NAMES CORRECT, BUT
 I READ THE DATE AS OCT 29 1823 N0T 1821

his parents are António da Costa and Umbelina
 Francis - she is deceased?
 her parents are
José Monis and Maria da Estrella

YES, AND AT LEAST ONE OF THE GRROMS PARENTS IS
DECEASED.  DEPENDING ON HOW YOU LOOK AT IT I THINK IT MIGHT
 ACTUALLY BE DEFUNCTAS.

 here
 is jacinta's baptism in 1804?

YEP! I WOULD READ IT AS NOVEMBER 5th 1804

 could this be António da
Costa and Umbelina Francis' marriage - what is the year?

 YES, I THINK YOU HAVE
IT.  I READ THAT DATE AS THE 8th OF DECEMBER 1781.  NOT
100% SURE ON THE 8th, BUT I READ THE ONE BEFORE IT AS THE
7th, AND THE ONE AFTER IT AS THE 10th.

 Hope this is
 of some help!

soares to jacinta rosa in 1821 guerabina?

 Not quite. He is of

already found and posted the link in one of your earlier

It reads: Jose de Rezende (filho

 in

  Faial da Terra.

  Here's your Jose Leandro.  His

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] NEED HELP WITH DEATH TRANSLATION

2016-10-17 Thread Margaret Vicente
You're welcome.

Not quite. He is of unknown (incognito) father as per his birth record
which you already found and posted the link in one of your earlier emails
on this subject.

It reads: Jose de Rezende (filho ilegitimo de Francisca de Medeiros
Rezende).

Translating to: Jose de Rezendes illegitimate son of Francisca de Medeiros
Rezende (Resendes).

best,
