Re: Validation errors for PHP tags
What I do is just render the page in the browser, view the (resultant) source HTML, select all, copy, paste into new BBedit doc, check syntax. (Or I use http://validator.w3.org/ instead of BBedit). I did not answer your question directly... but just thought I would mention how I work anyway... in case it helps in any way. -- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the BBEdit Talk discussion group on Google Groups. end of (semi-, but not incredibly-, long) line(s) not visible
Mac 10.7.5 BBedit 10.5.3 (3280) I though this was an issue that we had previously (several public releases ago) experienced and which was fixed ... but I am seeing it again tonight: Editing an HTML doc and I hit command-right-arrow to bring me to the end of the line and my cursor is no where to be seen, because the end of the line is not visible. The horizontal scroll bar does not accurately reflect the width of the doc, as defined by the longest code line. I have to turn on soft warp in order to see the end of the line. You guys have any insight or thoughts to help me out here? ... or should I start a support ticket? Re: Remote file path mapped to local
You know, I really would like to know why it is that people insist on posting incredibly detailed bug reports to this forum, rather than sending them to Bare Bones technical support. [snip] Anyway. Just wondering, really. Hi Mike, I suppose you would have to hear from many such separate individuals who have done that (or do that), to know. ...and I don't recall ever posting my (one or two in my life) BBedit bug report(s) on this list/group, BUT I can imagine I can identify with some of the BBedit group members' individual/collective consciousness.. when I say: Maybe the feeling is kind of like this: Darn it; I have a problem.. and I don't know if the cause is: - my own idiocy - my own lack of homework - my own custom/broken environment - BBedit's fault - other / act of God ...and I don't like to be a fool in front of the amazing wizards who make software like BBedit, especially since they might scold me, or worse, then they might not feel motivated to really do their part if they have to deal with too many people like me... and I want them to do their part, whatever that looks like. But here on the list, we are all idiots and compassionate people and skilled people - together in one big understanding happy family. PLUS maybe someone already has had the same problem as me, and they would like to tell me the solution, whatever the cause of the problem, ... and I am allowed to ask for that here on the list, ... but in official support channels I am only allowed to (properly) ask when the problem is likely to be BBedit's fault, and I have not reached the conclusion that that is the case... and meanwhile I just need help with this, now; I need to get back to work; I have no time to research to find out if I can 'legitimately' be bothering support. when launching, BBedit thinks my shift key is stuck down
Hi Everyone I'll contact support if need be, but I thought I'd start here.. For no apparent reason, this morning upon my traditional daily bootup and BBedit launch, as soon as BBedit launches I get a Growl message saying that the shift key was held down while launching Bbedit and so the startup items will not run, and open docs will not auto-open, etc. (Or close to that). (and sure enough my previously-open docs do not re-open.) So I think, oops, really?; I did that?, quit BBedit, re-launch, ...same message/behavior. So then I re-launch BBedit, open all my 67+ docs, re-place all my pallettes, check the OS's keyboard viewer to be sure my shift key is not stuck (It is NOT), quit BBedit, and relaunch Bbedit (w/out the shift key)... but same issue (..the shift key was held down while launching Bbedit...). Arg! Does anyone know what got corrupted, what I need to trash, or... ? Thanks, -Govinda -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the BBEdit Talk discussion group on Google Groups. help un-corrupting whatever BBedit internal file I just goofed up?
Hi Everyone I'll post to support if need be.. but maybe this is quick, here: Yesterday I was foolishly rummaging through old files without thinking, and doubleclicked a (harmless, in its day) disk image (and I am not sure what else I did), that was named like so: WebDNA_Glossary.img ...which I think was meant for installing (many years ago, on an old version of BBedit (v.7 ?)) a clipping set, back when they were called glossaries (or am I remembering correctly?). Anyway, I thought I backed out of actually doing anything.. BUT, the problem is that now every time I go to use this command: File Open Recent Then immediately/automatically a (modal to BBedit) dialogue pops up, with a title bar of WebDNA Glossary.1 17-31-50.img.. which is apparently an end-user agreement dialogue.. like you get just before software installs. .. and I have to click one of the buttons (print, save, disagree, or agree).. and I always choose disagree, to dismiss the dialogue. But it comes right back a second time.. and after the second disagree, only then do I get control of BBedit back. If anyone has a clue what file I effectively corrupted, could you please guide me to remedy whatever i did! Re: where (in prefs?) is the toggle to open files with/without the show files pane?
When in doubt consult the expert preference section of the help. :) By default, an editing window opens with the file list hidden, and automatically makes it visible when you open a second document into the same window. If you would prefer for the file list to always stay hidden: defaults write com.barebones.bbedit AutoShowFileList -bool NO Thanks for that Chris! Now I know where that list of expert prefs. 'live'. So I just tried this: [Govindas-iMac-2:~] Govind% defaults write com.barebones.bbedit AutoShowFileList -bool NO [Govindas-iMac-2:~] Govind% ..quit BBedit, relaunched.. opened an existing file, as well as created a brand new file.. and both open with the 'show files' pane open. (I repeated that several times with various files.) Not sure what is going on here.. but on intuition, my next step is to ask, Is there a command I can issue that will show me what an expert pref. is set to? Or maybe it is more useful to ask - perhaps BBedit is reading the pref. from one place, but writing it to another? Thoughts? Re: Move File List to right side
Is there a way to move the File List / Project / the thing you get with Command-0 in a project to the right side of the editor window? I can't be 100% sure what you guys are talking about ^^^. I mean I do not see a keystroke assigned to command-0 anywhere in my BBedit 10.1.1 menus.. but it seems like you are just talking about the Project File List - the list of files and folders in the project which is the sub- window on the left of the doc editor. I like the tool, I just hate it on the left. You and everyone else. Hate is a strong word. So is everyone. I am perfectly happy with it on the left. I don't remember that well the pros/cons (on-the-left vs. on-the-right) discussion there was in this BBedit Group some months ago.. but apparently the pros of having the File List on the right (if it were possible) did not stick in my memory... because now I cannot think of any reason why on-the-right would be preferable. Anyway all I meant to say here now is that everyone clearly does not apply. -Govinda -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the BBEdit Talk discussion group on Google Groups. Well, in a sense. It's one of the hazards that show up after you've reached Level III in BBEdit. The first hint is glimpsing ponies around the edges of your field of vision when you pause typing... Now I am really laughing (and blushing)... I get so literal, coding for weeks on end, that I actually thought it probably was a technical term referring to something about the way the app periodically scans the HD for some info related to pertinent files, and thought that maybe I was just behind the curve (again;-). LOL. (I think I was up way too late coding last night.) Sorry for the noise everyone. Re: Extensive Horizontal Scroll?
On a similar note, I've been having problems with very long lines of text (1,559 characters) - when command right arrow to the end of the line I don't see the actual characters, even though the cursor is correctly positioned. I have to soft wrap the text to get to that data, and then turn off soft wrapping to continue with my work. I can get the job done, but it's annoying to have to turn soft wrapping on and off just to get to the end of a line. phil I totally agree with Phil, here. I want to be able to command-right arrow to see/get the end of the long lines. I re-read this whole thread looking for an expert pref. or something to re-instate what (IIRC) used to be different BBedit behavior. Right? I remember I used to be able to see the ends of long lines, and now have to use soft-wrap to see them. Anyone know another way, other than soft-wrap? BBedit 10 project - git merge chokes on my bbprojectsettings file
Hi Everyone I am using BBedit since many years, but not expert in the expert features.. fairly new to using git.. (but enjoying, albeit over my head a bit).. and I only last week starting using projects. I love it because I see all the files in the (sub)directory(ies) and also have that handy list of just the open files.. etc. :-) Now my issue is that when I checkout a branch in git, do some work, commit, and then try to merge that dev branch back onto the master branch, I get this error in git: error: Your local changes to the following files would be overwritten by checkout: myDir1/myDir2.bbprojectd/Govind.bbprojectsettings Please, commit your changes or stash them before you can switch branches. Aborting I was about to simply tell git to ignore that file, using the .gitignore file.. BUT I suddenly realize I am perhaps in over my head. If I merge code/files, but do not allow BBedit to play with the state of things.. then am I asking for trouble.. with regards to how the project is going to behave in Bbedit? Please advise. I am not sure I even know what questions I should be asking, other than, am I on the right track to just tell git to ignore the 'myDir1/myDir2.bbprojectd/Govind.bbprojectsettings' file? Re: BBedit 10 project - git merge chokes on my bbprojectsettings file
IOW, what should I expect BBedit to do if I effectively (via a git merge) merge code *files* from a more-developed state of my project, with a less-developed state of the *bbprojectsettings file*? Will BBedit just do the right thing/gracefully recover, or else potentially botch/mung data, in my project? I could just test and see what happens.. but i don't trust that I would know what I would see; I know better than to assume anything, given my level of understanding. I hope someone here knows better what the bbprojectsettings file even does. -Govinda -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the BBEdit Talk discussion group on Google Groups. Re: image width/height markup missing after image button from HTML Tools palette. (?)
can you please articulate why one might prefer using inline styling for image height and width, rather than old school height and width attritbutes? Bruce, I had not even got that far as to which method (styling -vs.- attributes) I would use in the end. I was just aiming to get BBedit to type *either* method for me. I have not read enough articles on the topic to know which method will eventually be my preferred method. Meanwhile I tend to style images inline just out of convenience.. and so like Kerri says, why have extra attributes? But I am hardly prepared to make any argument about it. My OP was just to see if I could get my brand new BBedit10 install to perform as per the docs - auto-type width and height values, anywhere, somehow. While we are here, what is your argument (seemingly) for old-school attributes? image width/height markup missing after image button from HTML Tools palette. (?)
HI Everyone I just upgraded to BBedit 10, and I have a feeling this has been covered.. but when I read (and follow) the relavent parts of the manual, I do not seem to be getting the expected behavior. Also I just discovered the youtube videos put up by barebones... like this one, on my topic: http://www.youtube.com/user/BareBonesSoftware#p/u/8/rGuKPCgjkXU You just click the image button in the HTML Tools palette.. navigate to the the image.. and hit enter and it apparently is supposed to (in an HTML doc) drop in the markup for the image, *including* the width and height attributes.. or alternatively, with a particular expert pref. set, then you can have the width and height put in the style attribute instead. Never having set an expert pref before.. I just followed instruction as per the above video and (seemingly successfully) from Terminal, ran these two commands: [Govindas-iMac-2:~] Govind% defaults write com.barebones.bbedit HTMLImageMarkupCreatesSizeAttributes -bool YES [Govindas-iMac-2:~] Govind% defaults write com.barebones.bbedit HTMLImageMarkupUseInlineStyleForImageSize -bool YES ...and yet, still, when I use the image button from the HTML tools palette, it is not generating any markup related to width or height. Not sure what I am missing. Thanks for any pointers, -Govinda -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the BBEdit Talk discussion group on Google Groups. Are you using the current prerelease version, BBEdit 10.0.2? The video says that's a 10.0.2...it was first announced in one of the recent prerelease builds mentioned here on the list. Thanks Kerri, That must be the answer then. So I'll just wait for 10.0.2 to become final and see what happens when i update to that. Re: FTP/SFTP Browser shows two folders in every directory
Unix will only execute files that are either in the predefined path or are specified by a full path name. This is a security measure. For example, if you have the command ‘ls’ to list a directory and someone writes an executable named ‘ls’ than instead deletes the current directory the could be bad. So, you define a list of folders (called the PATH) that contain all the programs that you generally want to run. For example, my PATH differs from the default in that I added $HOME/bin to the end of it so that the scripts that I write are run-able without my typing ~/bin/myscript, I can just type myscript instead. Since I added it at the END, nothing in my ~/bin/ will override a ‘real’ command in on of the default directories. I would still have to type ~/bin/myscript (or ./myscript if I was already in ~/bin/) to execute my own ls command. Thank you LuKreme! Yours (and Doug's) were the most comprehensive explanation for me.. in the sense that now I know (even without further study) just what I wanted to know to be able to set myself up to execute commands just by typing only the command. You see the mind of the poster as well as the thing you are explaining. :-) And I appreciate the book recommendation, as I will read it during one of my future 'study vacations'. -Govinda -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the BBEdit Talk discussion group on Google Groups. John, Robert, Doug, Thank you guys so much for your replies. I just started reading the manual about worksheets for the first time.. and .. wow! Great. So much for me to learn, I am easy to impress here.. I'll have to dig my way as/when i am able.. lots of real work deadlines here that are much more superficial than our cool tools. Re: FTP/SFTP Browser shows two folders in every directory
In addition, there is no harm in using ./something in lieu of just something. In fact, there are cases where you HAVE TO use the ./something form because the plain something will not work. I find it is simpler to always use ./ to avoid these cases. Herb and Robert, I really appreciate your replies.. because it answered some questions I had while I am learning some more of the command line these days.. (just as I need something.. to further stumble my way through to the next step in what I am *really* trying to do ;-) I really want to ask more questions here .. but perhaps BBedit users will (rightly) feel I am going too OT. (Like WHY does it not work to just be in the right directory and type the name of a command?; why does the command have to have the './' first? Re: BBEdit 10 cost
Not sure how I missed even the announcement of BBedit 10 being released. (?) Several weeks ago, I helped BBedit tech/support identify a bug .. and in the process got a pre-release version of BBedit (which was not ready for final public release.. but nevertheless was stable and had fixed the bug I found). I thought I was still running that pre- release version of BBedit, but when I checked just now, it says I have version 9.6.4. So anyway just now I checked for updates and it says I have the latest version. (But you guys all seem to be playing with version 10. (??) Doesn't BBedit offer full-point-version upgrades when we check for updates? And anyway isn't checking for updates still automatic? Re: Possible, worthwhile to port Solarized for use with BBEdit?
I came in to just finally give you some feedback Steve.. but anyway here is my shortened notes on color-theme experiments: I tried all the color schemes at the 3 places posted in this thread (4 or 5 dark themes and 4 or 5 light themes).. and my favorite so far is Steve's solarized-light. (I guess I am not fond of dark themes at all.) I just made one change to Steve's solarized-light: I lightened the highlight colors to make selected text easier to read. In case anyone wants to mimic that change: I changed these: from: Color:PrimaryHighlight = rgb(18135,23374,25099); to: Color:PrimaryHighlight = rgb(35453,45709,49522); (or just drag the 'highlight color' brightness slider up a bit in the BBedit pref. dialog.) It looks better when making selections so I can still read the text that is selected. One drawback to this change though is the high-lit text when finding differences is harder to read... but as anyone who has played with this will notice.. it is hard to find perfect colors that satisfy all conditions/ criteria! I also changed Color:SecondaryHighlight equivalently, but honestly I am not sure even how to see in a doc what is SecondaryHighlight. Re: Possible, worthwhile to port Solarized for use with BBEdit?
Note the #? That tells me you are running it from root, not your user account. The normal bash user prompt should end in a $, like this: MacPro:~ rodb$ I assume other shells (csh in particular) work the same, i.e. use # for root. I know ksh does. Log out and back in and try again. -- Rod Thanks to Rod - that was the issue. (Though on MacOS 10.6.7 the (default) user acct.-demarcation char apparently is %.) BBcolors works fine now, as per your suggestion. Thanks Steve (and others) for creating the loadable bbcolors files. I have Steve's Solarized-Light.bbcolors loaded now, and will try each other one in turn for a few days each. Note to any newbies (like me) that to get the load command to work (at least for me), I had to drop the extension ... i.e. this did not work: bbcolors -load Solarized-Light.bbcolors but this does: bbcolors -load Solarized-Light -Govinda -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the BBEdit Talk discussion group on Google Groups. Re: Possible, worthwhile to port Solarized for use with BBEdit?
Hello to everyone following this thread. I was rather looking forward to seeing solarized in BBedit.. as I do think the experience on the eyes coding all day in BBedit (w/black text on white whitespace) could be gentler.. somehow.. and maybe this would help quite alot. Worth trying anyway! :-) Now I got stuck trying to run my first bbcolors command to backup my current colors before trying to load the solarized offering. (Thanks guys! :-). Here I am surely showing my lack of skill (and confidence) driving from the command line.. and perhaps this list is not the best place for this.. but in case I am on topic enough.. I would love a little help! (In case this is too OT, then honestly feel free to say, and I'll bow out.) Here is where I am stuck: sh-3.2# bbcolors -save GovindaBBeditDefaultColors 2011-04-10 09:22:31.073 defaults[233:903] Domain com.barebones.bbedit does not exist I do not know what to think of that ^^^ response... let alone what to do about it. Re: grep to strip out double hyphens from HTML comment?
If I understand this right, you are looking for extra hyphens in the opening and closing tags (I don't think these extra hyphens are illegitimate specificationwise but I'm not quite sure about that). Anyway, you could capture these by extending the pattern like this: Hi Roland, I am not sure either, but one article I read recently made me guess that double hyphens will always be a problem.. even if immediately concatenated onto the opening or closing comment tags. It would be easy for me to check, but anyway, for now moving on (below)... search (?s)!-{2,}([^-]*?)-+([^-]*?)-{2,} replace with !--\1\2-- this works really great, and covers the bulk of the badly formed comments i have in the files I am working with now. Thank you for the tweak! Comments nested completely in other comments (as seen in one of your examples) are a totally different beast. Please be aware that nested comments will break the above search pattern as it would break the second comment opening in something like !-- bla !-- nested blabla -- more bla -- well I get the idea that it is too much to try and do everything with one grep in my case.. because the ways the comments were written are bad in more than a few (tricky) ways. Thank you for your time. Let us here work with what you two have already offered, rather than you spend more time here. Your help is much appreciated. -Govinda -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the BBEdit Talk discussion group on Google Groups. Re: grep to strip out double hyphens from HTML comment?
Hi guys thanks so much for your replies; I appreciate that you offered me some more depth of grep. I'll have to really play with it before responding fully.. but I did notice this so far: (?s)(!--(?(?:(?!--).)*))--(?!)((?(?:(?!--).)*)--) seems to work good, but there are (unfortunately) all kinds of wonky code blocks in the files I am aiming to clean.. including some comments like: !-- hello world ---, and !-- !-- stuff -- hello world --, and !--- stuff --- (maybe ^^ this last type is OK? I forget just now.) (?s)(!--(?(?:(?!--).)*))--(?!)(.*?--) spans across multiple comments if they are like so (which many are): !--- some notes here --- more stuff !--- begin : some notes here --- (?s)(!--[^-]*?)-+([^-]*?--) works great except that comments where the number of extra hyphens, like so: !--- some notes here ---, or ! some notes here are not found. I am hardly complaining with your guys' offerings.. ;-) You are teaching me, and the bad HTML is not your fault, and is what it is (certainly not anything real interesting to you who are trying to help).. I am just saying what I am finding (as I try the greps across many dozen sloppy/legacy files), in case you get any more inspiration. grep to strip out double hyphens from HTML comment?
Hi everyone Amidst all the excitement for the new v.9.6, I hope there is time for my grep Q: I am trying to make a grep search string which finds any HTML comment that has a double hyphen inside itself. It should find any HTML comment which: - starts with !--, - ends with --, - spans any number of lines, - contains two consecutive hyphen chars which are not part of the opening !-- or closing --. It should NOT match across multiple HTML comments. The find string must preserve anything it finds inside the HTML comment which is not the double hyphen.. so that I can replace in a way to just effectively strip out the double hyphen. I have been successful to create a grep for each of these criteria separately, and also some greps which include several of the criteria.. but so far I have not been able to come up with one which meets all my criteria. After making sincere effort, it will be very rewarding to see how one of you grep wizards does it. Re: alphabetically arranage a project window's content's?
It appears that there is no automatic sorting capability. However, if you open a document drawer, its contents will be sorted. KP Thanks KP, but I do not understand for sure what you mean. Are you suggesting I open one of the docs in my project and open it's drawer, and then open/ add all the other items in the project into that drawer? If so, then I am already working like that, except that I have many more items in my project than I need/want open at a time. As I work, as the need for a currently-closed doc arises, I want to be able to quickly find that doc by looking for it in the project window. -Govinda -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the BBEdit Talk discussion group on Google Groups. Re: alphabetically arranage a project window's content's?
Click the green plus sign in the top left of the project window. Select the parent folder of your project. Toggle the arrow to open the folder. Items will be sorted alphabetically in that folder. It may be redundant, but it does provide another perspective. --steve Hi Steve, thanks for the suggestion, but if I understand your suggestion correctly, then you are simply suggesting a way for me to see a folder's contents in the Finder, rIght? Well in my case the project's contents are docs that are located in lots of different folders.. so I cannot see all the items sorted in one list like that. Re: alphabetically arranage a project window's content's?
I'm not sure how to do it with built-in commands, but it can probably be done with AppleScript. The following will get all the project items, then follow that with a sort on the 'name' element and then add them again to a new project document. tell application BBEdit get every project item of first project document --get name of every project item of first project document end tell I know that's not really a solution, but hopefully it's enough info to create a solution. Charlie Thanks for the suggestion Charlie, I often read here about people using AppleScript to custom-script all kinds of solutions to their issues.. and I would like to add AppleScript to my arsenal of skills so i can make my custom scripts too, when I need them.. But at the moment I still have not written a single AppleScript.. not even googled the topic to start to learn which would then qualify me to ask for help with any particular script. I don't even know where to begin with your suggestion. Since my issue is not critical, then for now, let me just say to everyone - thanks for your attention. In conclusion, I take it that I am desiring a feature of BBEdit that does not exist (yet?). No problem.. the work will all get done one way or another. Re: Files Not Always Saving
Aha!! Thank you Bucky! Finally an answer. That has plagued me too.. many many times. I thought I was nuts, then I thought BBedit was nuts.. and now I just advise everyone to make one of those 2 commands use a more unique keystroke so there is far less chance we keep doing this! -Govinda On Mar 31, 6:48 am, Bucky Junior buckyjunior...@googlemail.com wrote: Jack, I have a similar work flow of working locally and then saving to off-site. Re: BBedit and spaces
Greg, If I am thinking properly, understanding properly (I just woke up ;-) - this is not a BBedit question but a MacOSX question. Just go into the system preferences, go into prefs for spaces, and tell it which space you want to park BBedit stuff. Then when you launch bbedit it will launch there and new docs will open there too. If you move docs to another space to work then fine, but note that when you make a new doc it will still make it in the space that you told spaces prefs to keep bbedit in... If you need help with this or something ask again. If others might be annoyed by off topic, then email me privately. -Govinda On Dec 13, 5:01 pm, Greg Shenaut gkshen...@ucdavis.edu wrote: Is there some way to get BBedit to keep all of the various fragments of its user interface in the same Space? Re: Change request: don't jump view after redoing replace and find
I agree. I also want the redo to happen upon my keystroke and for BBedit to not scroll the window but instead leave me there at the site of the redo so I can just watch the actual I have just told it to do. As it is now, redo is not just what the name implies, but more like 'redo/find next'. -G --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups BBEdit Talk group. Re: Bug: find/replace wrap sometimes doesn't
Yeah, me too... and I also don't remember how to replicate it reliably, though I remember that I could always get the proper behavior back by doing something that I'll remember next time it comes up. I think it is not a bug but just the way we are relating to it. Just now I tried to refresh my memory of what the pattern is and I don't remember if what I just found is was I was remembering from before, but: while document has focus and I am using keystroke to navigate my find next/previous, it remembers the state of the 'wrap' checkbox in the find-dialog from the last time I *used a button IN THE DIALOG*. I.e. you can't change the state of the wrap checkbox in the dialog box, then click over to your document to give it focus and expect that wrap preference to stick in the doc/keystroke method. You have to first make the preference change sticky by using it once from the dialog before switching over to doc focus. I hope this made sense; I checked email straight outta bed, before meditation (like most need their coffee to start making sense, I need my meditation ;-) -Govinda --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups BBEdit Talk group. Re: Why doesn't this work?: Markup Utilities Translate...
As a workaround you could use a Perl script to convert the current selection to entities and save it as a Unix Filter in BBEdit. For example, Thank you guys both for your replies and time. Jim I must have stumbled on one of those bug cases since I get input name=test type=text size=20 / with the input button on the html tool pallette. But don't mind this on my account; this was not a huge hangup for me, just one of those many things that it takes more time to fix (i.e. finally figure how to get it into a keystroke) than to do the slow way yet one more time. I thought I'd try and push this one through. ;-) Dennis your reply opened up a whole new field for me where I have yet to play at all (I've never written perl, and Unix Filters in BBEdit?!) (what you Jim made possible with BBedit some time ago ;-). I will try doing these very things you suggest soon, thanks! -G --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups BBEdit Talk group. Markup Utilities Translate... not doing what I think I am telling it to do
I am sure this is bone simple, but apparently I am missing something.. I used to use something that worked here (but the last time I used it was several versions/years ago so I don't remember what it was). Re: how do we grep find NOT such-and-such literal *sequence* of chars
Oh I see now. Thank you for stepping through that for me Ronald. I didn't think it about that way, as I obviously needed to. I was just visualizing one whole line at a time, regardless. Good coders are not as easy to come by as one might assume. ;-) Thanks! -G The current behavior does make sense, actually, when you think about how BBEdit does the search. Pattern: (td.*?)(.+)(/td) Text: tabletrtdfoo/tdtdbar/td/tr/table First, consider searching forward, starting from the beginning of the line. The regex engine steps forward one character at a time, until it gets to the first td, which is matched by td.*?. The next part of the pattern is .+, which should match as many characters as possible. The regex engine starts by matching .+ all the way to the end of the line, then backtracks one character at a time until it gets to the second /td, which is matched by (/td). Then consider searching backward, starting from the end of the line. The regex engine steps backward one character at a time, until it gets to the second td, which is matched by td.*?. Once again, the regex engine matches .+ all the way to the end of the line, then, as before, backtracks one character at a time until it gets to the second /td, which is matched by (/td). The .+ allows the pattern to match across /tdtd to the last /td on the line, so you get a different result if you start at the beginning of the line versus at the end. Re: how do we grep find NOT such-and-such literal *sequence* of chars
Also I want to ask - is this BBEdit Talk group OK territory for these kinds of grep Q's? Of course if it is specific to BBedit then that is obvious, but is there some more appropriate list/group to discuss regex behavior (assuming the engine they discuss matches the behavior of BBedit's)? -G --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups BBEdit Talk group. multifile search hanging
this (grep on) search string: [^\t]\[header30\][^\t] hangs on multifile search. Maybe it is just a *relly* slow search (BBedit 9.01, OS 10.5.5). I need to find the literal [headerNN] while *not* surrounded by tabs (so it doesn't find it in my database header files. Maybe I input the correct search string, maybe not, but BBedit should do better than just hang on this, no? BBedit's auto-generation of img tags from finder drag broken in 9.0?
Hi all, quick Q: in BBedit 8.7 I could drag a selection of several jpgs from a finder window into my open html doc and it would generate the appropriate img tags . In BBedit 9.0 that is not working. Is there a default pref. that changed? Or did we drop that feature in BBedit9? ...or a bug? Meanwhile is there any harm running 8.7 and 9.0 at the same time?
