RE: [Chevelle-list] A/C for your 72 Chevelle
The best way to transfer freon is with a reclaimer pump. Put the tank that you'll be putting all the freon in ice. It will take the freon faster than trying to pump against higher pressures. A freon recycling, recovery machine is needed. Len

[Chevelle-list] A/C for your 72 Chevelle,my retort
Bill; I can understand that train of thought. Personally I warranty all my work, and have had no complaints. Everyone loves the new stuff. I'm sure the cars manufacturers and makers of 134-A are in bed together. It makes no sense to have to replace components in a car, and change the oil to retrofit away from R-12. We in this industry have a responsibility to retrofit leaky R-12 systems. It only makes sense not to dump more R-12 in a leaky old system. But, then charge people an astronomical amount to replace all those components to change to 134A?. It only makes sense to use a freon compatible with R-12 oil when retrofitting. I don't care what GM or Ford prefer, I'm talking from a practical stand point. Someone mentioned the flammable component, that's from "hot shot", another replacement for R-12. Bill you don't have much choice in what you use, I have plenty of reclaimer tanks, and even mentioning mixing freons makes me wonder how much hands on you do Bill. Its no problem keeping them separate, and the EPA requires labeling the tanks anyway. And besides that Bill, we both know the EPA requires you to recycle that old freon. I don't worry about "agents" Bill. I'm certified for all refrigerants and have worked for many refrigeration companies. I know the rules, and follow them. If you knew freons like you say you do, you'd be agreeing with me instead of defending 134A as a good choice for retrofitting. I haven't met one other tech who enjoys all the parts changing over pulling a deep vacuum and recharging. All my retrofits include a factory label informing shops which freon is in the system. If you've only got one bottle Bill that explains your opinions. We both also know most leaky systems come in the shop empty. Now personally I then nitrogen charge, find and fix the leak, and charge with fresh FR-12. no parts change Bill, no mixed freons, no big charge to the customer. they pay $60. Is that what your objecting to bill? Of course when your dealing with a factory warranty vehicle you use what they say. Most new cars have 134A.You do what your told, and I don't blame you. I'm a realist. I like to do what makes sense and works. On old muscle cars there is no factory warranty anymore Bill. Why change all those factory parts to retrofit to 134A? pull a vacuum and recharge it with FR-12. be done with it. Bill,I am a professional tech, and a shop owner myself. I own and operate Federation refrigeration here in Kansas city. I'm licensed and insured. I do have to answer for what I do Bill, and I do not advocate "mixing freons". I bet I have 13 different tanks on my truck right now. along with 4 sets of manifold gauges, one especially made for 134A alone. Another replacement for R-12 "in commercial systems" is MP-39. It requires an oil change from mineral to polyolester oil. Again only 80 percent of the original R-12 charge is needed. Its no fun converting leaking R-12 commercial units when removing the compressor oil and replacing it. The compressor has to be cut loose and physically dumped upside down to get the oil out. (I'm talking about the smaller units, the larger ones have oil ports)Replacing it with the same amount of polyolester oil. Just like 134A the dryers get changed, and any accumulator or other oil holding device. On my next retrofit I plan on using FR-12 instead of all that work. It keeps my customers costs down, that's what they want. Any questions? call the people who make the stuff. 1-800-555-1442. want to talk shop with me? 816-921-6984. Len Snow
RE: [Chevelle-list] A/C for your 72 Chevelle
Clint; That doesn't make any sense. All freons are separate and can be handled as such. I do this for a living. R-134A is the stuff the EPA insists you don't mix with other freons insofar as to make a law requiring us to use separate gauges for 134A. R-12, FR-12, R-22, R-502, all can be handled with the same equipment. Somebody's not giving you the facts Clint. And most probably its because they don't normally order that freon. And like I said before, its referred to with only two names. FR-12, and FRGC 12, Its not called Freeze-12. Hey let me go out to the van and get you some information...IGC InterCool Energy Corp.1-800-555-1442, very nice people in Latham NY. give them a call, they make the FR-12, and they may even remember me because I've called and told them what a great product it is. check it out for yourself. They may even have a number of a technician in your area to convert you, although they too were happy to hear it worked in cars. they made it for stationary refrigeration equipment. I can only speak from my experience. Its worked in cars for me with no oil or gasket change since the summer of 1997. just pull a vacuum in an r-12 system and recharge to 80 percent of the factory charge. I find an ounce or two more usually does it. I bet I alone have converted a hundred cars and trucks. Let me know what you find out. Len
RE: [Chevelle-list] A/C for your 72 Chevelle
Clint; actually it is also called Frigic 12. great stuff. got 20 lbs on the truck now.
[Chevelle-list] A/C for your 72 Chevelle
Stanley; and others on the list; I'm a refrigeration specialist. Since 1997 I have been using FR-12 to replace R-12 in the old cars. No oil change, no gasket change, "NO OIL" change. big difference to having some place chop out all your old components telling you they have to to change the oil. R-134A uses a "polyoester" oil. R-12 (and FR-12) use mineral oil. Most freons use mineral oil. I can assure you all that R-134A is junk in retrofitting your old R-12 systems. Why go through the hassle? I pull a deep vacuum and charge the system with the recommended 80 percent of the original R-12 charge. Yeah, I know no one carries FR-12 (the stores) actually you can find it if you look. Check with a refrigeration company, not a heating and cooling company. Its also cheaper than the other freons. If your in the Kansas city area bring your Chevelle by the house. I can convert you to FR-12 in 30 minutes while you watch and learn. Usual charge? $60. I use it in my service van too. This works on all Chevelles pre 90. Ever see what happens to a 134-A system that gets moisture in it? turns everything inside it to a white peanut butter substance that can't be cleaned. Gotta condemn it. (something I see allot with small commercial units that run the liquid line through the water pan to evaporate water from the evaporator). I suppose the new cars already with R-134A are okay because they were built that way. Don't forget to wash your radiator and the condenser in front of it every 6 months. a dirty condenser raises the pressure of the freon, and on a hot day it will raise quite high(250-350 lbs per square inch), thereby finding or making a leak. Thanks Brad. I was hoping for 400hp, maybe all I need is a cam and a Demon carb. Maybe I'll just settle for monster torque across the rpm band. Can you tell me anything about these 441 heads? i.e.maybe the cc's? They kept the press in studs. Len

Hey Brad Can you come up with anything for this combo? a 2 bolt main 1974 400 small block bored .030 over. TRW diamond top 9.5 to 1 compression pistons. The cam is a Comp cams 270H magnum cam(lift .470"). The 1974 441 casting heads were fitted with 2.02 intake and 1.90 TRW stainless valves, polished and ported. there is a set of 1.6 magnum roller rockers, eagle 1 5/8 headers hooked up to 2.5 inch exhaust through a set of Dynomax super turbos. Top this off with a edelbrock performer with a quadrajet. The ignition is an accel power coil HEI. Did I miss anything? This is pushing on a 350 turbo tranny and a 2.73 rear end. Thanks for your help! Len Merry Christmas to "the list" from Len Snow & Diane Peppin.

John I'm a native of Ithaca, NY. though I've been out here in Missouri a long time now(20yrs). I'm very sure you could find someplace away from the city to store your Elky. I can understand the city troubles; but in reality you don't want to drive it, or keep it around the city . Store it cheaply in an old mans finished barn, about 30-50 miles out of NYNY, then you'll find yourself making trips out of the city, and driving it if and when you get the chance. Its the best place in the world to go cruising, and in each small town people look up and give you the high five when they see a hot looking ride. RE: [Chevelle-list] Business Recommendations
Okay folks; just my two cents worth. If you start a website naming bad people and places you might open yourself for a lawsuit from those same unscrupulous dirt bags. You would be better off listing those places as places you weren't quite happy with. Be careful how you word what you say. Slander and deformation of character probably apply on a website too. Although for instance posting something like... I used *** restorations and wasn't happy with the work they did. They blah blah blah my car and I wouldn't go there again. That would be okay, but something like: The guy who runs *** restorations is a thief who stole my money! the S.O.B. couldn't find a spark plug to save his life...and can't read! might get you in trouble, and it might not. I'm just saying to be careful how you approach this idea. The website of good places can't get you ion trouble.

RE: [Chevelle-list] 72 Chevelle 307 emblems
CARL! What a thought! I have a fiberglass Harwood hood that I can put the Cowl induction emblems on, and directly behind them I can add the "400" Emblems. Thereby not ruining the fenders for a possible eventual change to factory! Your a genius! That's what I call inspiration! And.. Oh wow! the 307 Emblems fit the same holes as the 400 emblems! SO if I ever changed the motor and kept the hood...wella! no problems. Thanks for the idea Carl! :-Diane
RE: [Chevelle-list] 72 Chevelle 307 emblems
Dale; hmm Well, I thought my original fenders had the MALIBU on them, there were other holes also which I thought held the 350. I have seen 72's with MALIBU 350 on each fender. I have a set of 307 emblems which now I imagine must have gone to an earlier model. Thanks for the pictures too. Seems I'm still a little confused. I suppose Just Malibu would be fine. I was hoping to badge the beast one way or another. Back to do it "my way" huh. Maybe since I'm shooting to clone it I could put the SS on the fenders and the 400 Emblems right below it. Ed; Your post is old. This subject has been over for a while now. Glad you could finally join the "masses" though. heh heh Hey, anybody know where the 307 emblems go on a 72 Chevelle Malibu? I was thinking on the fender behind Malibu(like the Malibu 350's) and if I choose to "Do it my way" where might the 400 emblems go? same place? I remember my 71 Kingswood had them at the lower rear part of the fender on or near the trim. And the winner is71 Dark forest green metallic(today :-Diane)
RE: [Chevelle-list] to paint original color or not?
You know what~ I thought I was going to confuse myself even more by asking everyone's opinion, and.. The majority did sway me. I should do it the way I want. Thank you "ALL" for your opinions. They were all very good points to consider. And the winner isI still can't decide...(sigh)
[Chevelle-list] original color or not?
Thank you all for your responses. The interior is green. The transmission is the original 350 until I get a 200R model. I haven't been too concerned about the drive train as it's easy to put that all back together as it came from the factory. The paint is the issue of the decade. I have pondered it for years. Albeit I did sandblast the sea green off it a few years back, and it sits in primer now. All these responses are wonderful. If I had my way I would still paint it an Air Force gray with appropriate markings!. Talk about unique :-) I'm starting to lean toward my first cars color(a 71 Chevy Kingswood in dark green metallic) or the 72 Spring green metallic looks nice. I wish I could stand the sea green, but I really hate it. Of course I got it as a repo in 91 for $250 because I knew someone who owned the bank. I couldn't have cared less if it was barf green with stripes at that price. The biggest downfall is someone went way overboard with rustproofing and even got it on the hood hinges. The sandblaster didn't put much effort to removing it, (said it was impossible) Funny thing is it still flakes off in places. I'll still listen to opinions. You people are all great. I haven't seen Sarge online lately. I'm going back east for a month soon. I'll dwell more on it till I get back. Nice to see there are other women on board here. :-Diane Chevelle's- not just boy toys ;-)
[Chevelle-list] to paint original color or not?
Okay folks; I'm looking for opinions. My Chevelle is a 72 Malibu 307 from the factory. I have already changed the drums to rotors but other than that its like it was built. I have the numbers matching 307, but right now it has a 400sb built to go fast. That can be replaced with the original. THE QUESTION IS, should I paint it the original Gulf Green Metallic?(which I do not like) or paint it a color I can stomach. I know I answered my own question just now, but I want opinions. I'd like to show it some day, do you lose a lot of points for changing the color? Should I care what others think? ,build it the way I want it?, or try to keep it perfectly kosher with the build sheet?. I'd like allot of opinions, THANKS!:-Diane

Ken' Thanks for confirming that. I had also heard that the coil voltage could regulate spark plug gap. I.E. Accel or better means you can go from .035 to .060, is that true? I've been changing the gap on my 44RT's and have been pretty happy with .055 using an accel coil. :-Diane Diane, Yes, you are correct in what you say about spark plugs. It is not the motor size that dictates the plug that you should use but the heads that you are using. For instance, between a World Products (Dart) head and a Brodix or factory head, they can all use different plugs. It is indeed the depth of the threads in the head that dictate what plug reach you should use. Ken

I mean, I guess I need a floor shift "column" duhhh Well, Yes, I have the wiring harness still connected to the dash. I'm sure I have the console wiring harness too. SO, I guess I need a floor shift console to proceed. Do I need to drill holes in the tunnel, and where would that be? :-Diane ___ Chevelle-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://chevelles.net/mailman/listinfo/chevelle-list_chevelles.net

[Chevelle-list] Column to floor conversion
My 72 Chevelle Malibu has a column shift, I have the console, and a shifter, and the cable for the shifter. I really want to do this conversion. I am planning on changing the 350 turbo to a 200R4 maybe next year with the economy the way it is. Can anyone give me a steps needed to pull this off? I also have the gauges dash I plan to install...you gotta love these cars to want to do all this...anyway, thanks up front for your ideas. :-Diane ___ Chevelle-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://chevelles.net/mailman/listinfo/chevelle-list_chevelles.net

[Chevelle-list] Chevelle talk
Joe wrote "Simply tired of the chat room. Thought this was a serious information link" Joe; Yeah, I remember when I remarked "I thought this place was here to talk about Chevelles"...I got dibbed the rest of the day for it. I think its a good place to get information on our beloved cars, and meet fellow Chevelle lovers. Sometimes the subject seems to stray...like keg drinking, and hooters pictures, but that's okay by me. interacting with other Chevy lovers is allot of fun. I'm pretty serious about my Chevelle. I posted a question tonight that I haven't heard back on, but maybe the 350 turbo change out is kicking a dead horse in here. I'm sure it isn't a new subject. I've still got lots of questions to ask... like, Do I have to get new upper A arms to use the 17 inch rims? Stuff like that. There does seem to be allot of smart people in here. Someone once told me that www.teamchevelle.com is set up for the serious questions. They do have allot of info there. Well Joe, glad it wasn't something I said. Is your Chevelle painted? any pictures you want to share? mine is still covered in primer...soon though...I hope... [Chevelle-list] 700R4 or 200R on a 400SB?
John; Forgive me my pun, your starter sounds up to the task. I know heat is a destroyer, From starters, to radiators, to trannys and engines Seems we've got oil coolers, tranny coolers, and I'm thinking we need an air intake cooler(but that's just the scientific mechanic in my head talking). Gas is at $1.79 today here in KC(reg unlead) with the holiday weekend coming up, I'll bet we see $1.99 by Saturday. Just a guess, seeing how it went up .20cents a gallon since last night; when the news made a big deal about the prices in New York, and California. It looks like I'm going to convert the 350 turbo to a 700R4, or the 200R. I think it's time to think about gas mileage. Right now its a 4 bbl Quadrajet Carb, a 2.73 rear end. I have an extra crossmember allegedly for a 400 turbo, and a spare driveshaft. I need the tranny, and I'd like to move the shift from the column to the floor. Is there a known procedure for this? What other parts am I going to need? I have the console with shifter, and a new cable that connects it to the trans. Any suggestions? :-Diane ___ Chevelle-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://chevelles.net/mailman/listinfo/chevelle-list_chevelles.net

RE: [Chevelle-list] Paint you own car vs maco, earl?
Ooops, Well lets see, I had it sandblasted(the main body) and it looks like they were real gentle on the metal. The man told me he had done quite a few, and would go easy. In fact he even left some paint in some places where he got nervous. I have a brand new front clip so I'm not sure if I should primer the black factory coat on the fenders. The hood is a Harmon fiberglass one that looks beautiful, I'll probably have to treat that special. I already epoxied painted the frame, but I'm afraid the primer on the body is not etching primer, and its thin enough to where surface rust has started. I'm guessing I get to sand it down again right? And start with metal etching primer. I notice the sandblaster took off some factory bondo near seams and that should be refloated right? I know I can do this. I just wish I hadn't started with the wrong primer. :-]iane ___ Chevelle-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://chevelles.net/mailman/listinfo/chevelle-list_chevelles.net
[Chevelle-list] Paint you own car vs maco, earl?
So I imagine I should sand down the surface rust then apply it, sand again and primer? I wish I was a car painter. I have almost all of the equipment needed to do it, (painted houses) and with a little guidance I hope to paint it myself. ___ Chevelle-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://chevelles.net/mailman/listinfo/chevelle-list_chevelles.net

[Chevelle-list] 70-72 Chevelle front speakers(two)
Hey Guys, A few years back I changed my worn out speakers to some aftermarket stuff that had to be rigged in. Now I have OEM speakers, and can't remember what goes where. Can anyone get me a photo of the Left and right speakers mounted in the dash with the brackets? It requires removing the top dash pad. RE: [Chevelle-list] plastic media blasting
Matt; Yes, I sandblasted my chevelle. I begged the man to "go light and easy" I've never noticed a ripple in the panels, but it hasn't been painted yet. I am still cleaning sand out of it. I had it done for $150. of course there was no front clip or engine in it then. personally media blasting is supposed to be gentler on the car. Dale; Okay, thank you. I bet your correct. There are indentations on it leading me to believe it was mounted on the center bar. I can't understand why it didn't show up in troopers Chevrolet parts numbers book. Is anyone here interested in it? I paid $25 for it. Its new. I'm sure it would cost $3-4 to ship also.
