Re: Stus-List Folding/feathering Props
Hi Wally. I am interested. I have a CC 30-1 with an Atomic 4. Currently I am using a Gori 2 blade 11.5 x 8 but would consider getting a second one as a spare. If you get the right wave direction at the mouth of the Niagara River it can produce some huge standing waves. I am not sure what physics would cause the folding prop to close in air if it was rotating, my thoughts up to now would have been that the centrifugal force would open it or keep it open. Re: Stus-List Folding/feathering Props
Let me guess: When you went over the wave and the prop broke the surface, the engine started to race and kept racing after the prop went back down? That is exactly what happens with an outboard in waves (separate recent discussion on the list) and the situation is the result of cavitation. The engine races because the prop has no bite on the air, and the prop just makes bubbles and spins when it goes back into the water. When you throttle back, the water flow over the prop can reattach and stop the cavitation. Your Gori prop is geared, so it will stay with blades extended out as long as the prop shaft is spinning. It didn't fold when it came out of the water. And the advantage of the geared prop is that the blade going over the top does not close due to the effect of gravity. When traveling at higher boat speed, for example when coasting down as you approach the dock, with the engine near idle, the prop may fold slightly due to the water flow over the prop having more force on the blades than the thrust being generated by the prop spinning. But when you are going forward at idle speed with the transmission engaged at idle, the thrust on the blade will keep the blades folded out. That said, any folding prop does take a bit of getting used to. They all have idiosyncrasies compared to a fixed prop setup. I have not heard of any of them not opening, unless they have been sitting around so long that they are encrusted with junk/barnacles so bad that they wouldn't work even if they were fixed. Re: Stus-List Folding/feathering Props
Where I race, it is not a penalty to have a folder/featherer, the base rating assumes that you have this. A credit is granted from 3-12 seconds for a solid prop based on type of prop and mounting. Having raced with both a solid prop and a folder on the same boat, I can tell you that the penalty is well worth it. You provide the HP of your engine (and maybe the model and max torque information), the gear reduction (output RPM) and max engine speed, and information on the size/model/weight of the boat. They tell you which prop options would be optimal. For my 15,000 pound 38, with 36 hp diesel @3000 max RPM, and a 1.76:1 reduction Gori recommended a 16x10, Martec a 16x 10.5, and Flex-o-fold a 15x11 (each in 2-blade, I'd need to look for the 3-blade recommendations). On the face of it, 14x12 looks like a lot of prop. State of the art electric drives (using AC controllers or DC Pulse Width Modulation) used in industrial vehicles can be designed to produce max torque at under 10 RPM, but the torque produced generally declines as RPM increases. My 16x10.5 Martec is roughly equivalent to a 14x14, I'm told. It is handling about 300 ft-lbs of max torque at about 1300 prop RPM. (Torque load falls off above that point as you approach 3000 engine/1700 prop RPM). Don't know what the torque curve is for your electric drive, but I wonder if it might be unable to reach a high enough RPM before the torque load maxes out the RPM. Re: Stus-List Folding/feathering Props
Vibration can be the result of the clearance between the tip of the prop and the bottom of the boat. The rule of thumb, as I understand it, is that the clearance should be at least 10-15% of the prop diameter. More is better. So if you have a 16 diameter prop you should have a minimum of 2 clearance between prop and hull. More is better for vibration dur to pressure wave and for efficient flow. The old 17 prop on my boat caused vibration. The 16' prop doesn't seem to. Of course, that might be caused by different blade shapes, or balance, or whatever. YMMV. I switched from a fixed 2 blade prop to a used 3 blade feathering prop (CDI - no longer in business) on my 29 mark 2 last spring and I am very happy with the results. Motoring speed is the same in forward / reverse but with a huge increase in power / thrust. Prop walk is less than with the 2 blade fixed. Improved speed under sail. Best regards, Bob Hickson, P. Sam, The original prop was a Michigan Wheel fixed 2 blade, and there was no remarkable change in vibration either way when the Gori was installed. It might have been better, prop mass is more central to the shaft, but it would take some sort of measurement instrument to tell for certain. I have read, and it makes perfect sense, that all else being equal a 3 blade is less prone to vibration, so that is why I was looking. I don't think that I get appreciable vibration from the prop anyway, and whatever there may be is totally swamped out by the one cylinder diesel. (Yanmar YSB12) I did do a careful engine to prop shaft alignment once, which when wrong will cause vibration problems, and I should do it again sometime in mid to late season when the various hull bending stresses have settled down. It is a task best done on a cool day and when in a very patient frame of mind. I am sure that there must be someone who has done it, but I know of no one who actually has a 3 blade feathering or folding prop on a boat as small as ours. Makes it hard to weigh the advantage of such a costly upgrade. Re: Stus-List Folding/feathering Props
Ø … has a 3 blade feathering or folding prop on a boat as small… I had a 3 blade MAX Prop on a Ericson 30+ (2 cylinder diesel) back in the early 80’s. The boat was in a timeshare lease program here in the PNW. For me the three blade extra expense paid off in two ways. My timeshare customers often needed great brakes (i.e. backing power) and the ability to reverse in a straight line. The second advantage has to do with the many hours PNW cruisers will find themselves motoring in summer. A typical timeshare customer will attempt to cover many miles in their one week trip often pushing against the current. For our current CC 43, the three blade MAX Prop is all about traction. The heavy displacement can be a handful to stop if the skipper F’s up a landing. I have also pitched the prop to allow our Perkins 4-108 to develop full power/RPMs in case I need to power into big seas or out of a tide rip/whirlpool. (Long story short, I miss-calculated slack water at the BC narrows named “Hole in the wall”. Afterward the Mrs mumbled something about “never do that again with me onboard”. My young son just looked up and said “I’m glad I’m not driving”.) … According to rumor, PYI told someone that the 2-blade MaxProp can cause some vibration issues between the tip of the prop blade and the flat on the bottom of the bustle on some CC's. I have also experience with the effect of not enough distance between the prop blade and the hull. The rumor is accurate but comes with great variation based on prop diameter and hull shape. Here is another place where a three blade prop may have an advantage. With three blades a smaller prop diameter can be used to allow more space between the prop tip and the hull preventing water from “balling up” (my term not scientific) between the hull and prop. Re: Stus-List Folding/feathering Props
Sam - I was all set to rave about my Autostream feathering prop, then noticed from other posts that we're talking about a 26 foot boat. My Autostream looks big and clunky on my 38 foot boat, and I don't know if they make a smaller sized unit for smaller shafts. It would be worth a call, if you're into it. I definitely like it over the Maxprop, because it's stainless steel, and the zincs for it have a SS sheath over the single bolt, and thus the zincs don't fall off. You can also adjust the pitch under water, if you can hold your breath that long G. It has an external grease nipple, so you don't have to disassemble it when you haul out to repack it -- just put a grease gun on and a hunk of plastic or cardboard on the ground and pump away until new grease gooshes out all over the place. Before that I had a Campbell prop and really liked it. If I owned a smaller boat I'd probably go that route. In fact, if I have to replace the Autostream I'd probably put another Campbell on. I only replaced it because I was in a hot marina and it was turning red, despite zinc changes every three months. (Yes, it was a hot marina. Since I've been cruising my zincs last two years.) Re: Stus-List Folding/feathering Props
Do not find any vibration with our two blade MaxProp. The vibration rumor about two blade props used to be common when the prop was behind a keel or inside a rudder aperture. Typical boats with attached rudders; Luders, older Sparkman and Stevens, 1970's Pearsons, etc. Supposedly the blades would lose thrust whenever they got behind the keel or aperture, and bite into clear water when in the stream. A three blade prop supposedly always has one blade in the stream. I never believed the theory. I like my two blade cause it feathers. We align the drive shaft when racing to orient the blades vertically. A three blade prop would feather but would always have more drag. Just look at them in the boatyard. Shaft angle causes at least two blades to be dragging. A three blade on a saildrive makes better sense, but I'd probably choose the two blade again. Re: Stus-List Folding/feathering Props
I second Rich’s comments regarding MAX prop maintenance and how contacting PYI Inc plus reading the info on their web site as being helpful in the prop type decision. We did modify Calypso’s prop shaft slightly to install our MAX prop. We did this back in 1999 but IIRC we cut ½” off the threaded end to match the MAX Prop installation specs. Follow the guidelines for insuring the taper and key allow complete seating of the prop to avoid extra vibration and wear. Calypso is in salt water all year. I use Pettit’s Barnacle Barrier zinc paint to protect from cold water growth. I use the MAX prop zinc plus 2 shaft zincs (sacrificial anodes). I dive to check the prop and zincs twice a year and haul out every two years on average. Being in fresh water for the sailing season and out for winter, your maintenance should be significantly easier. If your boat yard has issues with theft consider removing the MAX prop for the winter to avoid it being stolen for the scrap value. The prop is easily removed and re-installed, blades only even easier. Re: Stus-List Folding/feathering Props
Have the Max Prop two blade feathering prop. Great forward and reverse and braking. The prop is pricey but reliable. I looked at many other designs before settling on MaxProp. You set the pitch during installation, so you can increase or decrease on the next haul if necessary to tweak it. Maintenance is simple; grease at haulout (to push out any water prevent freeze damage) and before launch to be sure prop is fully lubed. Not too big a deal. The prop has two set screws which you remove and replace with zercs. Then replace zercs with set screws before launch. I think greasing extends the life a great deal. I might consider a Flex-O-Fold. They seem beefy and well designed and a lot less money. Sam, I have a two blade folding Martec prop that goes 7 kts forward and four kts directly sideways in reverse. Going with a Gori this winter. Sam I also have the 2 blade Martec and a 26. I have not found poor performance in reverse but I don't do it a bunch either. Can push just fine going forward. Sam, I have a two blade Flex I Fold, which goes nicely forwards and backwards and replaced a 2 blade non-geared Martec that went sideways in reverse and sometimes went forward if the blades opened together (even after rebuilding). The two do not compare. Tim Mojito CC 35-3 Branford, CT On Oct 20, 2013, at 7:10 PM, David Donnelly da...@gnuattitude.ca wrote: Sam I also have the 2 blade Martec and a 26. Re: Stus-List Folding/feathering Props
I have used MAX feathering props on three different boats, the smallest was 30'. On a CC 26, a MAX prop may be a little overkill unless you plan to motor into wind, sea, and or current much of the time. For smaller short distance racing and cruising a geared folding may be the cost vs. performance sweet spot. For Calypso, at 24,000 lbs displacement with yearly trips that expose us to offshore type conditions our 3 blade MAX prop has been great. If we were to drop the cruiser from cruiser/racer we would switch to a two blade MAX prop. The MAX props do cost more and require maintenance but for me the performance has been worth it.
