[libreoffice-design] Re: [libo-marketing-priv] Blog post to involve esyhackers

2016-06-15 Thread Mike Saunders

Hi Heiko,

That's a great idea. I've gone through the blog post and cleaned up a
bit of the English. As Cor notes, it's a good idea to present the easy
hacks as fun, and highlight from the start that they don't take up much
time. Lots of people would like to get involved in open source but only
have an hour or so each week.

Similarly, I've found that you can get people interested by talking
about the experience they'll gain. Think of computer science students
who will be in the job market soon and want to have some impressive
stuff on their CVs. Anyone can set up their own SourceForge or GitHub
project -- but if you've had your work included in a major FOSS project
like LibreOffice, Firefox or the Linux kernel, potential employees will
take more note!

Once the blog post is up, I'll promote it via our usual channels.

Mike

Also, is there any particular significance to the different colours of

[libreoffice-design] Social media and website banners

Hi everyone,

I'm working as the new Marketing Assistant for The Document Foundation
(https://blog.documentfoundation.org/blog/2016/02/18/marketing-project-new-marketing-assistant/)
and I've just put together some banners that developers, supporters and
translators can use on their websites and in social media:

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/Branding/Social_Media_Banners

If anyone from the design team has any input or suggestions, please give
me a shout! I'm thinking of adding an icon to each one, like in the bug
fixing banner. Eg a smiley face for donations, or a speech bubble for
translations.

Thanks

This campaign runs through May, and it would be awesome to have a bunch

[libreoffice-design] Position of Impress slide management buttons on toolbar

2017-01-31 Thread Mike Saunders
Hi everyone,

I just saw this comment on a Slashdot article, talking about the Impress UI:

"In Powerpoint there's a big button marked "New Slide", on the left hand
side of the ribbon. On Impress it's buried in the toolbar somewhere on
the right and not given any particular importance. One of the most basic
actions is less usable in one tool over the other. A succession of
little things like this compound the hassle of using the tool."

Looking at it in LO 5.3, in the top toolbar, there are 26 buttons before
the trio of slide operations (new, duplicate, remove) appear. Would it
make sense to move these closer to the left, given their importance?
Another option would be to have a big "New slide" button under the slide
thumbnails on the left.

Of course, I'm not a UX guy so there may well be a reason for those
icons being where they are. Just some thoughts, in any case :-)

[libreoffice-design] LibreOffice infobar - text inconsistencies

2017-07-28 Thread Mike Saunders
Hi,

Regarding: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DF0TT5cXsAAh7hx.jpg

A couple of inconsistencies:

* The red line has "This Document" whereas the blue one has "This
document" (I think both should "document")

* The yellow line has "ok" and the green one "Okay". For consistency
with the rest of the app, both should be "OK"

Minor nit-picking, but if someone has a pointer where these strings are,
I can try to fix them myself (and learn more about LO dev in the process)

[libreoffice-design] Notebookbar status for LibreOffice 6.1

2018-05-30 Thread Mike Saunders
Hello!

So the release of LibreOffice 6.1 is still a couple of months away, but
we in the marketing community are starting to plan the release
announcement, videos and other materials.

How is the Notebookbar looking? I assume it'll still be experimental in
6.1? I recall someone (Andreas?) saying that one of the Notebookbar
variants is getting close to completion, however, so we could mention
that in the press release / video.

Indeed, I could make a separate video showing how to try it. The two
things to bear in mind are:

1) It must be easy to revert to the "normal" layout
2) If there are many different Notebookbar variants in the experimental
mode, we need to be careful that users don't accidentally enable the
wrong one, and complain...

Cheers,
Mike

[libreoffice-design] Design ideas wanted! Open Badges for LibreOffice contributions

2019-02-12 Thread Mike Saunders
Hello,

I'm working with Sophie Gautier on implementing the Open Badges system
in our community: https://openbadges.org

In short, it lets us recognise achievements of community members, by
issuing badges when certain targets are reached (eg after a certain
number of code commits, or updates to the wiki). We're working with the
infra team to see what's possible, but in the meantime, we'd like to get
some design ideas for badges!

I've gone through the process of issuing a badge, but the standard
design isn't very exciting:

https://newdesign.libreoffice.org/rookie-badge-issuer.png

We'd like to have something with much more LibreOffice identify, based
on the branding and colour guidelines here:

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/Branding

If anyone wants to try a few concepts or mockups, that'd be great :-)
The main design requirement is that they fit into a square, and have a
transparent background, like the example above.

Thanks :-)

Thanks Franklin! Although indeed, the design list filters attachments,
so I've uploaded it to the wiki:

(We can also use the wiki for future ideas.) I like the design, although
the text around the edge may be hard to read when the badge is shown at
a smaller size... What do others think?

[libreoffice-design] Sticker designs and merchandise ideas for FOSDEM

2019-11-04 Thread Mike Saunders
Hello everyone,

At events such as FOSDEM, we give out LibreOffice stickers, such as the
ones on the wiki here:

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/Material#Stickers_.28designs_for.29

For the upcoming FOSDEM event in February, we'd like to print some more
stickers, but with a new design -- so we'd appreciate some ideas and
input! Like, it'd be good to have stickers with a different shape,
although we still need to adhere to the branding guidelines:

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/Branding#Guidelines_and_Best_Practices

If anyone has ideas or mockups, we'd love to see them :-)

Also, we're thinking of other merchandise ideas for our booth at FOSDEM.
What else could we give away? Balloons is one idea, and I think the
Gnome booth had socks this year! Of course, we have to think about
budget too -- stickers are cheap enough that we can give them to every
visitor, but for some things, we may only be able to give to a handful
of people...

Thanks in advance for any ideas!

[libreoffice-design] LibreOffice Branding Colour Palette for Inkscape and GIMP

2019-10-04 Thread Mike Saunders
Hello,

@meetdilip1 on Twitter has created this colour palette, based on our
branding guidelines:

https://github.com/meetdilip/Libre-Office-Colours

It could be especially useful for participants in the 10/20 logo contest:

[libreoffice-design] LibreOffice Impress Template Contest by the Indonesian Community

2020-10-12 Thread Mike Saunders
Hi everyone,

Check this out:

https://blog.documentfoundation.org/blog/2020/10/12/libreoffice-impress-template-contest-by-the-indonesian-community/

https://lumbung.libreoffice.id

IMO it'd be great to have some of them included in LO by default. What
do you think?

[libreoffice-design] openSUSE + LibreOffice Conference 2020 Will Take Place Online

2020-06-03 Thread Mike Saunders
Hello everyone,

You may have already seen it, but we've announced that the joint
openSUSE + LibreOffice Conference 2020 will now take place online.

The uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic and its effect on
travel, conference planning, logistics and possibility for attendees to
come to the event were reasons for shifting the event from a physical
event to an online event.

Nonetheless, moving the conference online is good news and the
organisers intend to provide a great conference that is filled with
insightful talks, technical presentations and sessions dedicated for
those who want to socialise during the event.

Learn more on the blog, and check out the Call for Papers and
Mini-summit opportunities:

Attachments aren't allowed on these mailing lists, but thanks for
sharing the link. Note that we have guidelines and best practices for
logos here:

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/Branding#Guidelines_and_Best_Practices

So putting things inside the document symbol is generally frowned upon.
Also, and this is just my personal taste: the icon you shared is perhaps
more interesting than the plain white document, but on a small
taskbar/dock, I think the "The Document Foundation" text would be too
hard to read.

But that's just my take -- what do others think?

[libreoffice-design] Small and creative design job: "Proud contributor" stickers

2020-11-19 Thread Mike Saunders
Hi everyone,

A while back, we created some "Proud contributor" stickers like on the
right-hand side here:

https://blog.documentfoundation.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/month_of_libreoffice_may2018_posting.jpg

We'd like to make some new ones, especially for the current Month of
LibreOffice. So design mockups and suggestions would be very welcome!

The stickers are 11x3 cm in size. Branding elements can be found here:

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/Branding#Resources

It would be cool to use the LO 7.0 branding in some way:

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/Branding#LibreOffice_7.0_series

In any case, thanks in advance for any help/mockups :-)

Mike here from The Document Foundation, the non-profit entity behind
LibreOffice. That's great! We have a flyer specifically for schools and
universities:

https://blog.documentfoundation.org/blog/2021/03/09/new-generation-flyer-for-schools-and-universities/

Currently we don't have a Chinese translation, but if you'd like to
contribute one, we could then get some flyers printed. And now to your
questions:

> (1)Do you know there are how many users using the Libreoffice?

We estimate around 200 million users, based on downloads, market share
and other statistics/factors.

> (2)How is the developing situation of Libreoffice? Are you lack of labour or
> money?

LibreOffice is developed by a worldwide community. Many features are
implemented by volunteers, and the localisation and documentation
projects especially have lots of volunteers.

A large portion of code commits is from certified developers and
companies in the LibreOffice ecosystem:

https://www.documentfoundation.org/gethelp/developers/

https://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/professional-support/

The community is healthy and lots is going on, but we certainly
appreciate more contributions from volunteers!

> (3)Do you think the Libreoffice will be better than the commercial software
> like Microsoft Office?

Well, maybe I'm biased, but I think it's already better in many ways.
You can see a detailed comparison here:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Feature_Comparison:_LibreOffice_-_Microsoft_Office

> (4)What do you think is the biggest advantage of Libreoffice?

It's free and open source software, available on many platforms, and
supports a huge range of file formats:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGkKq3f9aps

> (5)Can you earn profits? If you can,how do you get the profit?

The Document Foundation is a non-profit entity, and most of its income
comes from donations by individual users. You can find details about
where the money goes in the ledgers:

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/TDF/Ledgers

> (6)Are you trying new ways about advertising or developing?

For advertising, specifically marketing, we are trying to tell the world
that LibreOffice is more than just an office suite -- it's a community
with many projects, and a place to build up skills and meet new people.
Having 200 million users is nice, but it's also important to have a
strong community behind the software, to ensure it has a healthy future.

Re: developing, from the side of The Document Foundation, we have a new
Developer Community Architect who's helping to bring on board more code
contributors:

https://blog.documentfoundation.org/blog/2021/06/16/hossein-nourikhah-joins-the-tdf-team-as-developer-community-architect/

Then there is the ecosystem of companies that I mentioned before, that
contribute many new features. You can see the company names in brackets
next to the features here:

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleaseNotes/7.2

We're implementing an updated Marketing Plan to better credit the work
of these ecosystem members, and encourage enterprise users of
LibreOffice to get the software from them. This benefits all users, as
the features that are added by the ecosystem make their way into the
codebase too.

I hope that helps!

Cheers,
Mike Saunders

[libreoffice-design] LibreOffice community members: Have your say in our survey!

2021-08-25 Thread Mike Saunders
LibreOffice community members: Have your say in our survey!

Hello everyone! At The Document Foundation, we try to grow and
strengthen our community in many ways. We’d like to improve our support
for existing community members who’re working on LibreOffice, but also
increase the number of contributors (and TDF members).

To achieve this, we’ve created a survey for active members inside the
LibreOffice community, to identify areas where focused activity is
needed, and address the needs of local projects around the world.

There are 17 questions in the survey, and it runs from today until
September 8. So, if you’re active in the LibreOffice or Document
Liberation projects, let us know what you think! We appreciate all feedback:

[libreoffice-design] Let's do awesome things! Get support for your projects and ideas from our budget

2021-10-15 Thread Mike Saunders
Want to organise a local (or online) LibreOffice event? Need some
merchandise to boost your project or community? Then we can help you!
The Document Foundation, the non-profit behind LibreOffice, is backed by
contributions from ecosystem members and volunteers, as well as
donations from end-users. This helps us to maintain TDF, but we can do a
lot more too. And next year, we want to do a lot of projects again!

Each year, we set a budget that LibreOffice projects and communities can
use for financial support. Some examples:

* Booking a location, and travel refunds for a local event (eg a
translation sprint)

* Merchandise for community members, to use at events and conferences
* Infrastructure to start a new project (or help an existing one)

So if you have some ideas for a meetup, project or activity that could
benefit from financial help, let us know! We can also assist you in
other ways: our team members are there to help you, and enable you to do
exciting and interesting things.

You don't need to work out all the technical details right now - the
main thing is that we have an overview. To help us with planning, we
kindly ask you to send your ideas by the end of November, as we try to
prepare the 2022 annual budget during December.

You can send your proposal (with estimated costs) to
budg...@documentfoundation.org and we'll take a look. Of course, can't
guarantee that everything will be approved, but we'd love to hear your
ideas!

Re: [libreoffice-marketing] Re: [libreoffice-design] Moving to LibreOffice 8?

2023-04-07 Thread Mike Saunders

Hello,

On 06.04.23 22:12, Eyal Rozenberg wrote:

Great, what's the problem? Why should we be in a rush to get existing
users to upgrade from 7.5 to 7.6?

Well, one argument is that we have very limited resources to support two
branches. LibreOffice 7.5 won't be around forever, so at some point
we'll need to push people to update to 7.6/8.0, as the previous version
won't be maintained and could potentially have security issues.

On Reddit, social media etc. we see lots of posts from people using
ancient versions of LibreOffice, and have no idea that there are newer
major releases. There are various reasons for that, but IMO we need to
keep people up-to-date. Not for quarterly sales targets as a
CompuGlobalHyperMegaCorp, as you say, but because it's better for us all
in the project when people are using maintained and supported versions.

So,
we should be at least skeptical about copying MS behavior regarding MSO
in which their marketing wing is calling the shots.

Agreed that we shouldn't copy problematic behaviour, but if our goal is
to raise awareness of LibreOffice as much as possible, and get it into
as many hands as possible (and I know not everyone agrees with that),
then we have to be aware of the market in which we're operating, and
competing.

IMO, it's a lot like the whole "using proprietary services to reach
users" debate. Arguably, as a FOSS project, we should avoid closed
platforms like Twitter and Facebook. But we make a compromise and are
active on those platforms, because they are very effective for reaching
new users and communicating with them.

So I think our marketing has to balance these things. If we only care
about the technical side, we could use XTerm-style numbering (just keep
bumping a single number with every release). But as if we want to reach
Microsoft Office users and make a compelling argument to them, our
marketing has to fit.

And I know that Italo has a ton of experience and knowledge in this
field, so his perspective on this is very valuable IMO.

Cheers,
Mike
