2007-09-13 Thread Jason Dillon
I'm converting all of the assemblies tonight, should be done in
another hour or so.

But, currently server/trunk is not building due to:

So, I can't verify that everything is super happy...

A little bit more insight into what I'm thinking of doing... since

I'd like to convert all of the assemblies to basically look like
what the assemblies/geronimo-jetty6-javaee5-gshell produces.

And then I'd like to start converting the other cli bits to gshell
command impls, like: deployer, client and shutdown.

And then (maybe around the same time or before the above), I'd
like to adapt the gshell of target jvm bits to load jars from the
repository, instead of using the lib/* bits.

A little background for those who haven't looked at assemblies/
geronimo-jetty6-javaee5-gshell and what it produces from a lib/*
perspective. Right now I've set up the assembly to produce:

   geronimo-jetty6-javaee5-gshell-2.1-SNAPSHOT/lib
   geronimo-jetty6-javaee5-gshell-2.1-SNAPSHOT/lib/boot
   geronimo-jetty6-javaee5-gshell-2.1-SNAPSHOT/lib/endorsed
   geronimo-jetty6-javaee5-gshell-2.1-SNAPSHOT/lib/gshell

Where the bits in lib/* and lib/endorsed/* are the same as they
were before. The bits in lib/boot/* and lib/gshell/* are specific
to gshell. And normally a gshell installation would have
everything I put into lib/gshell/* into lib/*, but I moved them to
a sub dir for now... since the bin/*.jar's load jars from the ../
lib/* dirs.

The lib/boot/* stuff is the very minimal gshell bootstrap classes,
which setup up the other happiness... and let you do things like:

   java -jar ./geronimo-jetty6-javaee5-gshell-2.1-SNAPSHOT/lib/
boot/gshell-bootstrap.jar

And that will give you a nice shell... or

   java -jar ./geronimo-jetty6-javaee5-gshell-2.1-SNAPSHOT/lib/
boot/gshell-bootstrap.jar start-server

That will launch the G server process using all of the right -
Djava.ext.dirs and whatever properties that we currently have
hacked into platform scripts.

Anyways, so the idea is to move all of the bits which are current
in the lib/* into the repository, and then configure the gshell
command impl to load put the correct dependency artifacts onto the
classpath of the target jvm that is booted up. This will augment
the existing kernel bootstrap from repo stuff, putting evertying
except what is needed from gshell into the repository...

And really, what I'd like to eventually get to is having the
bootstrap from the repository... so that everything except for
what is now it lib/boot/* and lib/endorsed/* can live in the
repository like happy little communistic jars should be :-P

* * *

And then there are longer term things for GShell...

Remote administration (via, telnet, ssh, or custom ssl protocol...
last is most likely to actually happen soonish)

Process management, which is great for clusters, or staging ->
production management. A full suite of command-line tools which
can manage the configuration of a server... easily. So, for
example, lets say you've got a configuration that is working
really well for you... but you want to play with something new...

So you might:

   ./bin/gsh backup-configuration before-mucking
   ./bin/gsh start-server

And then go and change a whole bunch of stuff... and it doesn't
work... yikes... so rollback...

   ./bin/gsh backup-configuration hosed-server
   ./bin/gsh restore-configuration before-mucking
   ./bin/gsh start-server

And then maybe you want to play with the "hosed-server"
configuration again...

   ./bin/gsh start-server --configuration hosed-server

Of course,

Hi Tim,

I'm pretty sure I asked about it (or was about to have asked, but
failed), but why is the plugin called g-eclipse-plugin? Wouldn't it be
better off if it called geronimo-eclipse-plugin? It doesn't say much
when I have g-eclipse-plugin in my eclipse plugin repository and in
discussions people tend to use geronimo-eclipse-plugin even though it
may seem to be easier to say g-eclipse-plugin and following the
plugin's name. It can be confusing.

I think I should've noted it sooner and I do appologize to talk about
it now right before the plugin is to be released and am leaning
towards -1 because of the name (I don't want to be disruptive to the
process, so just a friendly reminder I should not do that do the trick
just fine ;-))

Re: New GShell-based Geronimo Server launcher now in server/trunk

2007-09-13 Thread Jason Dillon
Aighty, I've converted *all* of the assemblies to include the new
GShell-based server launcher goodness.

I'm still working on cleaning things up and adding more features to
the core GShell bits. And some things I'm going to change in direct
response to how we end up integrating it into Geronimo.

I've already hooked up a custom GShell branding instance which helps
change the default welcome text/help text/version muck to be Geronimo
specific (and not GShell specific). This is the first real usage of
GShell being used to support another application (um, the server) so
I imagine that I'll (we'll) learn a little bit about that and
refactor the branding bits as we go along.

 * * *

I did a few things... first, I've changed the boilerplate modules to
use the assembly module for most of the heavy lifting.

And then I've put in the same structure that was in my POC assembly
into everything.

So that means that everything now has these additional goodies:

*Scripts

bin/gsh
bin/gsh.bat
bin/start-server
bin/start-server.bat

* Boot Jars

lib/boot/gshell-bootstrap.jar
lib/boot/plexus-classworlds-1.2-alpha-10.jar

* Runtime Jars

lib/gshell/ant-1.7.0.jar
lib/gshell/ant-launcher-1.7.0.jar
lib/gshell/geronimo-commands-2.1-SNAPSHOT.jar
lib/gshell/groovy-all-1.1-beta-2.jar
lib/gshell/gshell-cli-1.0-alpha-1-SNAPSHOT.jar
lib/gshell/gshell-embeddable-1.0-alpha-1-SNAPSHOT.jar
lib/gshell/jcl104-over-slf4j-1.4.3.jar
lib/gshell/slf4j-log4j12-1.4.3.jar

* Configuration

etc/gsh-classworlds.conf
etc/gsh-log4j.properties
etc/layout.xml
etc/META-INF/plexus
etc/META-INF/plexus/plexus.xml

* Example RC bits

etc/rc.d/start-server,default.groovy

And if you run the shell once, then you'll also find this:

var/log/gshell.log

I've left all of the other goodies there for now too, so for example
these both should do very similar things:

bin/start-server
bin/geronimo run
bin/gsh -q start-server

 * * *

I'm not sure if I broke anything in the process, so I'd really
appreciate it others could look this stuff over and provide some
feedback. I probably did break something... (sorry)... but I can't
tell at the moment due to the tree not being buildable.

Remember I'm still whacking bits out... but if you think of something
you want/need that is related, please send mail (to the list should
do as long as the subject looks gshell-ish).

My goal is to get *all* of the command-line bits for the server to
run through GShell, and use that experience to tighten up the
framework and hopefully provide some simple documentation to allow
other projects to easily consume the GShell for their application
needs. And in the process of doing all that I'm going to get that
'remote-shell' command stuff working at least as a minimal
prototype. Might need to ping the network gurus for help after the
proto is working to finish up the design and make it truly kick ass :-)

Anyways... email for any reason. Aighty?

Cheers,

--jason

   geronimo-jetty6-javaee5-gshell-2.1-SNAPSHOT/lib/endorsed
   geronimo-jetty6-javaee5-gshell-2.1-SNAPSHOT/lib/gshell

Where the bits in lib/* and lib/endorsed/* are the same as they
were before. The bits in lib/boot/* and lib/gshell/* are specific

  Components: eclipse-plugin
Affects Versions: 2.1
Reporter: Shiva Kumar H R
Assignee: Shiva Kumar H R
 Fix For: 2.1

Start server as usual. Once server has started, right click on the server and
select "Debug". Server will now be stopped and restarted in Debug mode.
Although this succeeds, sometimes during the process it throws a confusing
error dialog saying "Problem Occurred ... Server Apache Geronimo v2.0 Server at
localhost failed to start."

Similarly scenario while switching back from Debug to Run modes.

Re: [VOTE] Release Geronimo Eclipse Plugin 2.0.0 (RC2)

+1

Tested using
http://cwiki.apache.org/geronimo/java-ee-50-app-development-on-geronimo-simplified-using-eclipse.htmland
everything worked fine, except for a minor error as reported in
GERONIMODEVTOOLS-203, but that is a non-blocker.

2007-09-13 Thread Shiva Kumar H R
Ted,
I see you have updated the version of Web Tools Platform (WTP) to 2.0.1 from
2.0. However on http://download.eclipse.org/webtools/downloads/ I see that
2.0.1 is not yet released (only RC1 is available). Was it a typo?

Thanks for capturing this Anita. Also
http://geronimo.apache.org/development-tools.htm currently mentions the
pre-requisite as "WebTools Platform Runtime 1.5.1 driver", version should be
updated to "2.0".

2.0.1 again! Am I missing something?? Shouldn't this be 2.0?

Agree with Jacek about changing the name from "g-eclipse-plugin-*" to
"geronimo-eclipse-plugin-*". There will then be consistency in what we have
and what we speak.

Jacek,
Will it be fine if we do this in the next release 2.1? We probably can have
a JIRA opened for this so that we don't loose track of this. Getting 2.0 out
will allow us to focus back on trunk, in which we want to propose some major
changes to Geronimo deployment plan editors.

Hi David,
This problem happened in car maven plugin v2.0.1, and I noticed there is big
difference from the plugin in trunk. I'll try the plugin in trunk after trunk
server build is successful.

Re: [DISCUSS] Move J2G from sandbox to devtools

2007-09-13 Thread Shiva Kumar H R
Let's do both "move the current J2G files from sandbox/j2g to
devtools/trunk/j2g" and "update the Development Tools section of the
Geronimo site" at the earliest.

In http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg07349.html a user
was still using some old wiki docs (
http://cwiki.apache.org/GMOxDOC10/jboss-to-geronimo-jca-migration.html) for
migrating from JBoss to Geronimo. I think it would be a good idea to update
all related wiki docs (like the one above) with a highlighted link at the
top pointing to the availability of J2G toolkit.

Need to be more specific on the Eclipse package that users need, now that
there are 5 different distros -

> 1 -- Europa (also known as Eclipse 3.3), which is platform specific
1 -- Eclipse IDE for Java EE Developers (Europa v3.3 or later)

Also, by prereqing WTP 2.0.1, I think it requires newer levels of the all the
packages, based on the current prereq levels listed for WTP 2.0.1 RC1 at the
top of the following download page -

http://download.eclipse.org/webtools/downloads/drops/R2.0/M-2.0.1RC1-20070907070540/

Which means its targeted to Eclipse 3.3.1 which is supposed to ship by end of
Sept.

[jira] Updated: (GERONIMO-3413) factor the console portlets into separate plugins

 [

Viet Hung Nguyen updated GERONIMO-3413:
---

Attachment: geronimo-3413.patch

this patch fixes the Server Logs portlet. The "Web Access Log Viewer" does not
do any querying because the parameters are not being passed correctly.

additionally, the patch fixes the Shutdown portlet too. The shutdown option was
not working properly before.

There are other known issues:
1. Apache HTTP --> step through the process --> attempt to step through it
again (an error will occur)
2. Plugins --> Export Plugin --> I get one of two errors a) "Index=1, Size=0"
or b) RequestURI=/console/car-export not found
3. When installing the plugin for the first time I get 2 different types of
complaints a) no meta-data file found and b) unable to delete temporary
directory
4. I have to log in through ://:/console. If i was
previously on a page and stop/started the server and attempted to log in
through the redirected log in page, I will get an error. In the previous
console I had this ability.

This information is only valid for jetty. I have not yet tested them on tomcat.

ServiceMix 3.1.2 does not depend on camel afaik, only trunk does. And for
the
branch, you should try using https instead of http
(could you fix the release instructions if they are misleading?)

Re: [DISCUSS] Release Geronimo Eclipse Plugin 2.0.0 (RC2)

2007-09-13 Thread Ted Kirby
Tim and I have been working hard on getting the "Download and Install"
function to work to download a server for the eclipse update site and
install it your machine. The stablest level on which we have found
this to work is WTP2.0.1RC1. Other minor issues/problems occur at
lower WTP levels. Running and debugging the plugin in eclipse has
been tedious and buggy. I would vote -99 for releasing the plugin on
any level less than WTP2.0.1RC1. I have been frustrated to not be
able to work on other things because of these issues. You may well
judge that I am unduly focused on these issues. I am glad that you
and others have success with the plugin and various enhancements. I
am certainly disappointed in WTP2.0.x at this point. What level of
WTP are you using? The WTP 2.0.1 release schedule is here:
http://wiki.eclipse.org/WTP_Release_2.0.1_Schedule, and calls for a
9/28 GA. I am good with an Apache Geronimo Eclipse plugin GA running
with WTP2.0.1RC1. Assuming WTP2.0.1 GA works as well as this one,
when it comes out, I think we should upgrade our levels and Tim's
build.xml to move to that level. It unfortunately seems prudent for
us to dig into the eclipse WTP community to make sure the parts we use
work.

2007-09-13 Thread Anita Kulshreshtha
FWIW, I followed the "Use Staging Site" instructions and used update
manager's staging_site to download tomcat version on windows. The
server and the admin console started fine. I got download urls for
various parts from ant build file at
http://people.apache.org/~mcconne/releases/RC2/build.xml

Thanks

I think we could mention this tool and include some links to the main website

In http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg07349.html a
user was still using some old wiki docs

I am all for this, especially so we can progress it onto the

noticeable and easily accessible to people interested in migrating
applications, as right now the only way to download it or even be
aware of it is by digging through our wiki.

Does this require a Vote first or does the CTR process apply

Re: [DISCUSS] Release Geronimo Eclipse Plugin 2.0.0 (RC2)

2007-09-13 Thread Donald Woods
Understand your frustrations, but the Eclipse levels in build.xml have nothing
to do with the user runtime levels and don't need to be updated unless we want
to use newer features/APIs in future Eclipse 3.3.x or WTP 2.0.x releases

I think we all have learned now not to depend on the major train releases of
Eclipse, but to wait for the first maintenance release for any expected plugin
releases

We also need to continue supporting the prior Eclipse level in future plugin
updates, for any of our ISV and production users, who can't always upgrade to
the latest Eclipse levels due to other project requirements or tool
dependencies

Oh! there seems to be a confusion here. Please see
http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/moreinfo/compare.php

1) So "Eclipse IDE for Java EE Developers" (125MB) is actually Eclipse
Platform + WTP & it's pre-reqs. Ideally this should have been 'the only'
pre-requisite for Geronimo Eclipse Plug-in (GEP). However we are currently
running into a problem using this (Geronimo v1.0 & v1.2 servers are not
appearing in the list of available servers). Hence we have deferred using
this until next GEP release i.e. 2.1. Please see GERONIMODEVTOOLS-180. I
guess not having another JIRA opened for this problem, is the source of
confusion. I will open a JIRA soon after this.

2) "Eclipse Classic" (140MB) is the one to be listed as the correct
pre-requisite here for GEP 2.0.

[jira] Created: (GERONIMODEVTOOLS-204) Change pre-requisite from current "wtp-all-in-one-sdk-* (266MB)" to "Eclipse IDE for Java EE Developers (125MB)"

2007-09-13 Thread Shiva Kumar H R (JIRA)
Change pre-requisite from current "wtp-all-in-one-sdk-* (266MB)" to "Eclipse
IDE for Java EE Developers (125MB)"

 Key: GERONIMODEVTOOLS-204
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/GERONIMODEVTOOLS-204
 Project: Geronimo-Devtools
  Issue Type: New Feature
  Components: eclipse-plugin
Affects Versions: 2.1
Reporter: Shiva Kumar H R
 Fix For: 2.1

Geronimo Eclipse Plug-in (GEP) v2.0 currently has following pre-requisites:
1 -- Eclipse Classic 3.3
2 -- Web Tools Platform (WTP) 2.0
3 -- Data Tools Platform (DTP) 1.5
4 -- Eclipse Modeling Framework (EMF) 2.3
5 -- Graphical Editing Framework (GEF) 3.3

A wtp-all-in-one-sdk-* bundle that includes all the above 5 pre-requisites can
be downloaded from
http://download.eclipse.org/webtools/downloads/drops/R2.0/R-2.0-200706260303/
and it has a size of around 260MB.

eclipse.org starting with Europa release (http://www.eclipse.org/europa/) have
a new package by name "Eclipse IDE for Java EE Developers" with a size of just
"125MB" (no source bundles included) and has all the pre-requistes for GEP.

GEP should be updated to utilize this new package of smaller download size.

(This was attempted in GERONIMODEVTOOLS-180 and due to some problems faced,
this has been deferred to GEP 2.1).

2007-09-13 Thread Donald Woods
Thanks for the clarification. Guess if users only wanted Geronimo 2.0 server
support, then they could use the intended "for Java EE Developers" package, as
that has been working for me, but I've only been testing against a 2.0.1
server

Oh! there seems to be a confusion here. Please see
http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/moreinfo/compare.php

1) So "Eclipse IDE for Java EE Developers" (125MB) is actually Eclipse
Platform + WTP & it's pre-reqs. Ideally this should have been 'the only'
pre-requisite for Geronimo Eclipse Plug-in (GEP). However we are
currently running into a problem using this (Geronimo v1.0 & v1.2

have deferred using this until next GEP release i.e. 2.1. Please see
GERONIMODEVTOOLS-180. I guess not having another JIRA opened for this
problem, is the source of confusion. I will open a JIRA soon after this.

2) "Eclipse Classic" (140MB) is the one to be listed as the correct
pre-requisite here for GEP 2.0.

- Shiva

Also, by prereqing WTP 2.0.1, I think it requires newer levels of
the all the
packages, based on the current prereq levels listed for WTP 2.0.1
RC1 at the
top of the following download page -

http://download.eclipse.org/webtools/downloads/drops/R2.0/M-2.0.1RC1-20070907070540/

Or use the WTP 2.0.1 All-in-one bundle when its released, as it should include

2007-09-13 Thread Shiva Kumar H R
Oh! wasn't aware of those problems. Hadn't tried "Download and Install",
rather was directly unzipping the *deployable.zip. And everything worked
fine even with WTP 2.0 (wtp-all-in-one-sdk-win32).

Good that we have discovered "Download and Install" doesn't work with WTP
2.0 and only works with WTP 2.0.1RC1.

Thanks Donald for hinting that we don't need to update build.xml and rebuild
GEP.

I will re-test
http://people.apache.org/~mcconne/releases/RC2/g-eclipse-plugin-2.0.0-deployable-RC2.zipusing
WTP
2.0.1RC1 and post my results.

===  Step #1 -- Install prerequisites
   ===

The Geronimo Eclipse Plugin 2.0.0 has a number of prerequisites that
must be
installed prior to the installation of the plugin itself. These are
necessary
to establish the proper Eclipse installation. They are:

1 -- Europa (also known as Eclipse 3.3), which is platform specific
2 -- Web Tools Platform (WTP) 2.0.1
3 -- Data Tools Platform (DTP) 1.5
4 -- Eclipse Modeling Framework (EMF) 2.3
5 -- Graphical Editing Framework (GEF) 3.3

You can manually download the latest versions of these artifacts but
it is
somewhat cumbersome. Instead I've created an ant script (that is
based on
the one used to build the plugin) that you can use that will download
and unzip
everything for you. You can get it from here:

http://people.apache.org/~mcconne/releases/RC2/build.xml

After you download it somewhere (preferably in a temp subdirectory)
you can just
invoke it for your specific platform using one of these three

commands:

ant win32
ant linux
ant macos
It will create an /org/EUROPA/eclipse/3.3 subdirectory with all the
downloaded artifacts and an /EUROPA/eclipse subdirectory where
everything has
been unzipped. This is now the Eclipse installation directly you
should use to
test the Geronimo Eclipse 2.0.0 plugin.

If you don't wish to use the ant script it's very important to ensure
you have
the latest versions of each -- otherwise the plugin will not function
correctly.
For example, the WTP 2.0.0 release is fairly old and buggy, and our

plugin will
not function correctly. That is why this ant script downloads and
installs the
WTP 2.0.1 RC1 artifacts.

Now that you have all the prerequisites you can do either of the two
scenarios
below since each must work and both should emulate how it will be
installed and
used in the real world. Scenarios #1 and #2 are mutually exclusive
though --
do one or the other but not both unless you first delete and recreate

your
Eclipse installation directory (preferably with the ant script
above).

===  Scenario #1 -- Upzip everything
   ===

You can just download the plugin itself and unzip it into the same
directory
where all the prereqs were installed (e.g., EUROPA/eclipse). If you
choose
this option you must have an installed version of the Geronimo 2.0.1
server
somewhere on your system so that you can define an Geronimo Server
configuration. If you've never done this before the steps are fairly
straightforward:

1 -- Download the plugin and unzip into your EUROPA/eclipse
directory.
You can download the plugin from here:

http://people.apache.org/~mcconne/releases/RC2/g-eclipse-plugin-2.0.0-deployable-RC2.zip

2 -- Invoke the eclipse executable from your EUROPA/eclipse
directory. Select or
 accept the default workspace.

3 -- Open the Java EE perspective. From within Eclipse:

 a. Close the Welcome tab

 b. Select Window --> Open Perspective --> Other --> Java EE
You should now be in the Java EE perspective. You can see the
open
perspective tabs in the upper right-hand corner of your
Eclipse
workspace.

4 -- Define a new server. From Eclipse select:

 a. File --> New --> Other --> Server --> Server --> Next -->
Apache.
At this point you must see the Apache Geronimo v2.0 Server

selection
or the plugin was not installed/unzipped correctly.

 b. Select "Apache Geronimo v2.0 Server" --> Next --> then enter
the root
directory of your Geronimo server installation --> Next -->
Next -->
Next --> Finish

 c. Now in the Java EE perspective you should see the Apache
Geronimo v2.0
server (bottom pane, middle tab usually) that you can now
start in

2007-09-13 Thread Ted Kirby
As to my frustrations, I was asked! :-)

Yes, that is a good point you raise about the distinction between
build level and user run level. I view it, however, as a beneficial
short-term tactic, until WTP.2.0.1 GAs, but not a beneficial long term
strategy or approach.

I think Tim provided great service and innovation by giving us
build.xml to download all the required eclipse bits. I think it makes
great sense to allow the user to use it to download eclipse at the
same level as the build, so users could easily get the supported
level. This is also well documented in the instructions at
http://people.apache.org/~mcconne/releases/RC2/Geronimo_Eclipse_Plugin_2.0.0_Instructions-RC2.txt.

All things considered, I think it's a good thing to build and have
users run with the same level of eclipse.

You may need to delete old versions of OpenEJB snapshots from your

Viet Hung Nguyen updated GERONIMO-3472:
---

Attachment: geronimo-3472.patch

this fixes the HTTP connector fully. However, the SSL and AJP connectors (or
maybe it's just the portlets) are having trouble saving/retrieving the
"bufferSizeBytes" attribute. On any instance of a restart (connector or the
server) the bufferSizeBytes gets reset. The config.xml shows the correct values
though.

Re: [DISCUSS] Release Geronimo Eclipse Plugin 2.0.0 (RC2)

2007-09-13 Thread Lin Sun
Tim, thanks for your nice instruction. I am able to do scenario 2 fine
without any prob!

I have noticed 2 things:

1) one other recommended scenario (may be the most recommended scenario)
used to be not download anything, but start at define a server then
choose the link called "download additional server adapters" when a user
doesn't see the adapter he wants there. From the resulting page, he
can just download the geronimo eclipse plugin. I don't know if you or
anyone has worked with WTP team to get our geronimo server to be on the
list?

2) I tried to deploy a hello war project and able to deploy fine. But
right click the project and do a run as, run on server doesn't bring up
the eclipse internal web browser automatically. I wonder if someone
else has noticed this?

Cool! I just tried this. It looks like it interrogates known sites
for supported servers. It appears that once we add our plugins/server
adapters to our "production" site, they will be picked up.
Interestingly, when clicking this button, I was offered one Apache
Geronimo server: 1.2.0! (from
http://www.apache.org/dist/geronimo/eclipse/updates/.) So yeah, I
think we need to fix this.

Re: [DISCUSS] Release Geronimo Eclipse Plugin 2.0.0 (RC2)

Hi Lin,

1) yes that is actually the last step in our "Release Eclipse Plugin Process"
(i.e., to ensure that the server and/or plugin can be downloaded from Eclipse
without having to add a new "Remote Site" from the Eclipse Help panels).
Unfortunately, this is not a scenario that can be emulated with our "Staging
site" so I didn't bother to list it.

2) I haven't noticed this but I don't know that I've actually deployed and run a
"Hello World" project. I'll investigate though.

Thanks

Re: [Discuss] What next?

2007-09-13 Thread Kevan Miller
Apologies for such a late response. This thread came out while I was
on vacation and got buried by a lot of other things...

This is a good list. Comments, below.

On Aug 30, 2007, at 8:12 PM, David Jencks wrote:

Getting 2.0.1 out the door was a great step and now might be a good
time to start discussing where we want geronimo to head next. Here
are some ideas I've had or think are important. If I were to try
to write actual sentences about all of this I'd probably never send
the email so this is way too fragmentary but maybe can spark more
discussion. I'm hoping everyone will chime in with their interests
and viewpoints, this is just what I've been thinking about lately.

Modularity.

For a long time we've been on the brink of having an actually
modular server, not just a conceptually modular server. As
reflected in a lot of recent discussion on the dev list, I think we
are so close we should really work hard to make this a pleasant
reality. Some of the steps I see:
- enhance the plugin framework so bits of more config files can be
added, in particular artifact_aliases.properties and
config_substitutions.properties. IIUC Paul has some schema changes
and xml handling rewrites in the wings as well
- finish up the pluggable admin console work and actually split the
admin console into appropriate bits for the plugins

- rearrange the build so it is organized by plugin
- actually assemble the servers we ship using plugins, perhaps
using gshell scripts
- have more server-building tools. For instance, a "button" to
push that spits out a server with just what is needed for a set of
apps and nothing else.

I wouldn't go so far as saying G is a "conceptually modular server",
but would agree that the modularity can be a lot more user-friendly.
And would like to see us building our server assemblies from plugin
parts. Sounds like you've been making some good progress on this path.

One caveat -- I would not want our Java EE servers (or other assembly
flavors) to become harder to use. One concern I have is ending up
with a bunch of differently versioned server plugins that we have a
hard time managing... I'd really like us to keep a critical eye on
ease-of-use...

Clustering

IIUC we have a lot of partial clustering solutions. For instance
there's WADI, native tomcat clustering, a terracotta integration,
and IIUC Jeff has been working on a clustering solution (my
apologies if I left any out). I'd like to know where these efforts
are in terms of actual functionality and reliability and what they
can be extended to do. We also need some kind of cluster admin tools.

Security
jaspi
triplesec
administration
beyond javaee security for jetspeed and roller
There are some good things about javaee security such as the idea
of using Permissions and evaluating them in a policy but there are
also a lot of limitations and problems such as no support for
restricting access to user generated content that didn't exist when
the security was originally configured. At least roller and
jetspeed have run into this problem. I think triplesec may provide
a fairly generic solution and it might be interesting to see if
other projects are interested in this.

Other apps
roller
jetspeed
proximity etc
It would be great to get "all popular apps" available as geronimo
plugins.

Management and troubleshooting
ARM
"trace on error" facility. Have a list of info that each component
can add to as the request moves through the system. If there's an
error, we can show the entire path taken with all data. Otherwise
we discared it.

server farm management (gshell?)

As Jason D has mentioned (and I really, really agree with him), we
need to address logging. We need to create a logging policy and need
to start addressing this in a consistent and rigorous manner...

Transaction manager
implement a "do work in a new tx" interface, hook it up to
openjpa. IIUC IBM has proposed an interface that lets server
pieces submit work to be done in a new transaction, thus
eliminating the need to deal with suspend etc yourself. There's
been some discussion on the openjpa lists, and we should definitely
do this. There may be more commonj work to do also, but I've more
or less lost track of that project.

make sure recovery actually works

Core
Better Spring application management

I think our basic issues have been resolved... But there are some
follow on improvements that should be implemented
for children, a separate Spring module, etc.

Investigate OSGI and figure out how it is different from what we
are doing, what it can do better, and what is missing from it.
Figure out an integration strategy whether it be "run OSGI as an

Re: Problem with referencing to beans from other ejb-jars

2007-09-13 Thread Kevan Miller
I thought I'd take the opportunity to send some love David B's way...
I think it's great the way he's been addressing these user questions
and documenting in the Wiki.

I hope we can get this stuff organized so that users can find this
information in a reasonable manner...

Hi Tomasz,

I created a doc for you that describes the missing parts.

  http://cwiki.apache.org/OPENEJB/ejb-refs.html

Keep what you have with the openejb-jar and add the parts described
in this to your ejb-jar.xml.

Unfortunately, while looking into this I discovered that our code
for overriding an @EJB annotation with an in the xml is
not implemented, thus if you have @EJB and the corresponding ref> as described in the first section of the document, you'll end
up with two refs and not one as you should.

We'll get this fixed asap, but until then follow the technique
described in the second part of the doc and in the next version of
Geronimo you'll be able to delete some of that xml and readd the
@EJB annotation.

Hello

I got deployed module A (JAR) and application B (EAR).

ejb-jar.xml does'nt contain interesting content,
openejb-jar.xml contains module description

B) Application contains two ejb-jars with beans

geronimo-application.xml contains

Bean in B-module references to bean from A (EJB) using code below:

YunFeng Ma updated GERONIMO-3466:
-

Attachment: calculator-stateless-ear.zip

I attached a sample which can show the same error in the car maven plugin trunk
version.

1. Unzip calculator-stateless-ear.zip to %Geronimo_Source%\configs
2. cd %Geronimo_Source%\configs\calculator-stateless-ear
3. mvn install

Then car maven plugin will failed to start openejb configuration.

[DISCUSS] G 2.0.2 Release plan

2007-09-13 Thread Kevan Miller

All,
I think it's time to start rolling out a 2.0.2 release. There have
been a number of fixes in response to user issues, since 2.0.1. Time,
I think, to make these available in a release. We'd also be able to
make use of released versions of OpenJPA, Axis2, and hopefully
OpenEjb, whittling away at our local builds...

I think we have one must-fix problem that is outstanding -- the MEJB
security issue. Assuming we resolve this problem, are there any other
issues which must be resolved prior to a 2.0.2 release?

Assuming we're in general agreement, I'd set a goal of creating a
release candidate by next Friday (Sept 21). I'm volunteering to be
the release manager.

Thoughts?
