Re: [slim] SS Path for multiple external usb HDD

2008-03-14 Thread ModelCitizen

This is one way to do it.

Creat a folder on your main drive (you could use the existing My Music
folder in My Documents if you liked) and then place shortcuts in it to
all the plcaes you music is held. If you have music on two other
drives, put in two shortcuts dirctly to those drives. You can create
shortcuts by right clicking in your new folder and selecting
New/Shortcut from the resulting drop down menu.
Point SlimCentre at your new folder (or My Music Folder, if you used
the one that already existef))

Another way to do it is to create a shortcut directly in your first
music drive to the second music drive. Point SlimCentre at the first
music drive.

I'm certain this must all be written in the Wiki.

[slim] Wiki migration help

2008-03-14 Thread JimC

We're getting ready to migrate the current wiki from the kwiki platform
to mediawiki. We haven't set a date for this transition, but we'd like
to do it fairly soon.

We've done a preliminary test export of our current wiki into the
mediawiki engine and the formatting/links/etc. are almost completely
wrecked. It looks like it will take some volunteers to help us clean
up the new wiki before we can "go live" with it.

If you are interested in giving us a hand, please let me know and I
will coordinate getting appropriate access for you, as well as provide
you with the URL. The work will start sometime next week and we'll go
live with it as soon as we have the major issues sorted out and a
decent version ready for the public.

Once we start the editing process, the current wiki will be locked for
edits so that we don't have a version control issue. Contributions
will be accepted, but you'll have to do them in the new wiki.

Also, if anyone has experience in moving Kwiki to MediaWiki, we'd be
eternally grateful for any advice you might have. The current export
tool left behind bad formatting, broken links, and a general mess so
any direction on preventing or reducing that would be much
appreciated.

I will look at those.

I just noticed that iTunes has a playlist called MyTopRated which is 4

Also, what about this:

It seems like you can program it to skip low ratings.

Glad you're in touch with Anoop. Hopefully he can get you up and
running.

I did some additional looking into the problem for my end, and found
that the controller does all its communications with the server via
port 9000. Only the players use 3483 right now. I'm starting to
believe that there may simply be a fault in the hardware. I did
consider one additional test we can try... it would isolate the AP from
the mix.

Can you try your set up completely wired? Put the server and the SBR
on the same ethernet switch, and then use the "bridged installation"
mode to have the SBC connect to the network via a bridged ad-hoc
connection with the SBR. The User Guide covers this setup, if you need
more information.

This will simplifies the network and gives us a "known" wireless
connection for the controller. If that still doesn't work, I'd
recommend that we replace your Duet and bring your unit back in for
more extensive testing.

If that *does* work, then we have a pretty good idea that the problem
is in the Controller / wireless access point connection.

I really appreciate your patience and willingness to work with us on
this. Hopefully your efforts will help us prevent this from happening
to other users when we finally do figure out the root cause.

2008-03-14 Thread rsilvers

I have thousands of songs... But I don't like all of them so the random
play feature on the Duet remote needs a way to filter good songs from
bad. I star-rate the ones I like using iTunes. Basically anything that
is 3 stars or above, I like well enough to listen to.

So I would love a feature where I could play at random songs which I
rated 3 stars or better. Also I want to be able to rate songs from the
remote and have it update my iTunes database (if that is possible).
iPods do this and later sync it with your computer.

Hi Jim,

Yes, I'm 100% sure there no firewall getting in the way of those ports,
although I had the same suspicion that it has to be something related to
that. I ran a packet sniffer today and noticed that there isn't much
traffic on port 3483 between the controller and the server, but what is
being sent is just broadcasting the name of the server, because the
server name is visible in plain text, and the packets are being sent
regardless of whether a connection is requested.

I talked to Anoop from tech support and he was very helpful in trying
to help me figure out what's going on, but we're still not there yet. I
send an extract from my packet sniffer to see if that might help, since
there are messages being sent on other ports that don't make sense to
me.

Thanks, and I'll keep updating this thread as I learn more.

I agree. The password protection, while only providing minimal
protection, allows me to access my music from any place with an

Frank:

First, call tech support again and reopen the ticket. That's not a
problem for them, but if it is please let me know. I'll make sure that
gets done.

Second, are you 100% certain that there's no firewall or other
application that might possibly be blocking the two ports we need (3483
for TCP and UDP, 9000 for TCP)? The only time I've seen a situation
where the Controller can't find SC is when there's something blocking
the communication ports. That doesn't mean that there isn't something
else wrong.

Do you have a Squeezebox (non-Duet, like an SB2 or SB3)? Can it
connect to SqueezeCenter using the same network attach method? If you
don't have an SB2/3, you could use a second computer running
SoftSqueeze to try the connection. I'm just trying to verify that we
can get connected with a player.

Finally, if you can post your tcpdump session it might help our
engineers isolate the problem.

Based on the information in your thread, you are using a Squeezebox v1 which
has 1.8mb of buffer space. This is equivalent to just 1-2 seconds of
uncompressed audio (WAV) which is probably what the FLAC is being transcoded
to. There is no room for additional buffering to be done. Hardware based on
the Squeezebox v2 and higher will support native FLAC and also has a buffer
almost 10x larger so periodic dropouts are much less common. To make
matters worse for you, the SB1 supports 802.11b wireless networks only
whereas the SB2 and higher support 802.11g. The truth is that the SB1 over
wireless is not a good choice for uncompressed audio/FLAC. For MP3 it's OK
because the SB1 can decode that natively and store a reasonable amount in
the buffer too.

Here's a comprehensive hardware comparison:

[slim] Getting album artwork from iTunes

2008-03-14 Thread Faucette

I was having some trouble getting SqueezeCenter to display album artwork
from my iTunes library. It had no problem with artwork that I had
downloaded from Amazon or scanned myself, but it would not display
artwork iTunes found when the cd was ripped.

I was able to solve this with a fairly low-tech step--in iTunes, go to
the first song of an album and "get info" for the track. On the
artwork tab, ctrl. x to cut the artwork and then ctrl. v to paste it
back. Doing this somehow allows squeezecenter to find the artwork when
it rescans the library.

I hope this is helpful.

Re: [slim] Tuning Squeezebox buffering parameters

2008-03-14 Thread lcahil

Hi,

I'm wondering how flow control and buffering work between the
SlimServer & Squeezebox, and whether it can be tuned. For example, how
many seconds (or kbytes) of audio does the Squeezebox buffer?

I have about 30,000 flac files in my SlimServer's library and I stream
them to a SB without any bitrate limiting. About once per hour I get a
dropout in playback. I've enabled the buffer fullness display on the
SB and have observed it rapidly drop from 100% to 0% (it only takes
about 1 second) whenever these gaps occur. I also detect a spike of
intense CPU activity on my server at these times... I haven't been
able to identify the process but I suspect it might be the SlimServer.

No doubt my server is the cause of the dropouts. But I was wondering
if it's possible to increase the amount of audio buffered by the SB to
make it more resilient to these temporary outtages? Is this a setting
that can be changed?

TIA,
Nico

PS: I've got a network packet trace of one of these dropout events if
anyone at Slim is interested in taking a look... I haven't anaylyzed
it in detail yet, but there is clearly a section where packet gaps
between the server & SB exceed 1000ms (where typically it's < 10ms).
This section corresponds to when the buffer underrun occured.

PPS: My SlimServer runs on a 2.2GHz P4 w/ 1Gb RAM under Solaris 8 x86.
Comms to SB is via 802.11b LAN. Wireless signal strength is excellent
(wireless hub in the same room as SB). SlimServer is v5.3.1.

Re: [slim] Completely stuck after 7.0 upgrade

2008-03-14 Thread Zaragon

It may not be relevant but I just had some similar and funny effects
after I installed SC7 on a new PC that I had configured with Windows
Home Server.

After some messing around it came down to the internet settings on IE7
that was running on the server. It wouldn't run javascript. Initially I
was getting page not loading errors before I started getting SC warning
pages.

What was apparent is that IE7 internet settings consider 127.0.0.1:9000
SqueezeCentre:9000 and SqueezeCentre.mynetwork.com:9000 as three
different sites so needed trust setting up or zones security relaxing.

[slim] CONTROLLER has gone Nuts

2008-03-14 Thread brdbointx

I have had my Duet package since the first day they shipped overnight
and it installed and played on my network with no issue. I have 3 SB3's
throughout the house (Kitchen, Bedroom and Basement) and the new Duet
Receiver (SunRoom).

Last night the controller said it had a software update. I let it
download and install. All seemed fine. But all day today I have been
having an issue with the controller -- It is on the HOME page and asks
me to choose a player - it just hangs on "CONNECTING TO.."

The controller shows all 4 devices. I can click on any one and it does
the same thing -- just hangs on that. I can arrow back and choose
another.

Here's the really odd parts:

1. Go to advanced _music source and both Squeeze network and SC7
appears but if I click on either one I just get a click sound. The
arrow doesn't change or accept it.

2. All 3 squeeze boxes work fine with their regular infrared control.
They can go back and forth and play on SN and SC.

I have tried starting and restarting. I tried disconnecting from the
wireless network and re-setting it up. I even did the reset and went
through it again. This worked -- and then about 20 minutes later the
screen froze and it was back to doing the same thing.

Still haven't heard a peep from anyone in tech support. 7 days and

[slim] SqueezeCenter "cannot connect to Web"

2008-03-14 Thread justrick

So I've just installed SqueezeCenter for use with my Squeezebox Duet. On
the very second page of the setup, it says it "wasn't able to connect to
the Web." On the following page, it says it can't find my account (even
though I'm already logged into it!).

Tried uninstalling, reinstalling, etc...same result. This is an XP
machine; I also tried installing it on a Vista system and it seemed to
work fine... but that's not where I want to run it from.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

Did this:
- reinstalled 6.5.4 works flawless
- removed all sorts of blocking
- reinstalled SC7.0 WITHOUT any active firewall or virus protection
- does not work at all. 'page cannot be loaded' whenever I start
Squeezecenter.

Giving up. Guess I'll be stuck to 6.5.4

Radish is correct.

Sean was referring to the digital outputs ONLY.

The analog side of the Squeezebox Duet has a slightly lower S/N ratio
as compared to the Squeezebox Classic. Take a look at the specs on the

That's correct. But in Slimserver 6.5.4 access was allowed for
127.0.0.1 as well as 192.168.0.* (which is the local network range).
And please note that 6.5.4 was removed prior to installing. it was no
'settings migration'. Shouldn't these settings have been removed too?

higher than the bitrate set for the player.

http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=3695

Another clue would be whether or not you're getting breakups in the
audio stream. If you have 320kbps Mp3's and your upstream connection
can't sustain streaming at that rate, then the audio will break up. If
you get no breakups then it's a good bet that the files are being
transcoded to a lower bitrate.

er, did you see the description of the included patch...?
granted, looking at it now that patch looks incomplete, but it is what I
use at home so I'll get around to a corrected patch eventually.

My stance at this point is, it's open source so you can have it any way

Having just taken a look at this bug, I have to say it seems to me that
what's being contemplated is a sop to satisfy users who are (a)
dissatisfied with the default album sorting order, and (b) not prepared
to add ALBUMSORT tags to achieve what they want. As soon as you start
offering some options, other users will start requesting different
options. For example, suppose you add an option that sorts albums
initially on ARTIST. I might say that's all very well, but I'd rather
you also offer the option to sort on ARTISTSORT rather than ARTIST.
Others might ask for the first sort key to be DATE. Where will it ever
end?

Surely the bottom line here is that the ALBUMSORT tag is there to
provide a means for any user to get their albums sorted however they
want. No need to rely on the Slim Devices folks to implement album
sorting the way you want it: just set up your tags and you have total
control.

If you already have a music library without such tags, it's not that
difficult to use a tagging program to set them up in a batch operation.
I happen to use Foorbar's Masstagger function, but I'm sure there are
equivalent facilities in things like MP3tag.

Re: [slim] jive album sorting

2008-03-14 Thread MrSinatra

kdf, how do you see the final implementation in practice?

i think artists is fine as is (by default) which is a simple
alphabetical list without artwork.

but albums should be the way dean suggests by default, artist, year,
album with little album artwork icons

right? is that how you see it too?

and i would think that various albums would also come up with the track
by that artist in such a list.

meaning, if i have 3 willie nelson ablums, and one various artist one
he has one track on, i would see all four albums, but only his one
track from the various album. yes?

Re: [slim] jive album sorting

2008-03-14 Thread MrSinatra

excuse my non-exacting use of language, a sin i am often guilty of
here.

i actually can't say if the tag is "standard" or not, tag standards in
general seem to be a mess and there is seemingly no ultimate authority
on them.

however, what i meant was that most people, and most rips via lame or
whatever, don't include the tag by default.

i see "albumsort" like "compilation" or other various 'extra' tags...
they may be standard via some standards body, but they aren't commonly
enacted by default on rips.

i'm not sure if one can enable them by default on a rip, maybe you can
configure EAC to do so... but mine doesn't do it.

anyway, my point is i don't want to use tags that aren't automatic via
the rip. and i surely don't want to add tags to thousands on albums.
i don't want to go thru my whole collection adding tags that SC7 (more
or less) doesn't need.

if its just a matter of patience, np, i can wait for jive to do what
SC7 does. but adding tags to make jive do what SC7 does? no thanks.

That's because it's optional and based on user preference. How you want
albumsort is certainly different than how I want it, so there's no
"standard" value, unlike something such as track title.

I'm pretty sure iTunes adds TCMP/COMPILATION to rips, so that one at
least is standard for a lot of people.

You sure can, EAC lets you add whatever tags you like as the whole FLAC
command line is configurable. What's more, you have the tokens you
probably need (artist name, album name, year) right there too.

What puzzles me is what you did before SC7? My understanding is that
the only way to affect sort order on SS6 was via albumsort tags, so
most people who care about such things already have them in their
collections. Personally I'm happy with alphabetical.

Maybe you should consider Jive as a WIP? It was developed quite quickly
and there are still a few things outstanding.
SlimServer/Squeezecenter took quite a few years to reach the state it
has.

Most of the navigational things I think are pretty crucial are due to
be addressed in 7.0.1:

* All Albums lisrings (from say, a Genre)
* Remember where you were last at when you return (i.e. back track)
* Reach the correct track in a Various Artists album when you've
navigated from an artist that has one track in that album
* Another one, which I've forgotten.

It simply hasn't been implemented yet. The Jive interface is more like the
player interface in terms of customizability at the moment -- not the web
interface. My opinion anyway... Of course, some things you can do in the
player interface (remove unused items, etc) can't be done in Jive yet
either.

[slim] Two-pane display to one-pane, and back

2008-03-14 Thread david515

I just installed Squeezecenter 7, and have a small problem. The default
display shows two pane. On the left is "home", with Music Library,
Internet Radio, etc., listed. On the right is the playback window.

When I click "information browser" the right pane expands to fill the
entire active area, and I can't find a button that will restore the
two-pane mode. Refreshing the browser reloads the two-pane display.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Just set the ALBUMSORT tags suitably and they'll be sorted in whatever
order you want.

I personally like my albums listed in artist order, then in
chronological release date order, so my ALBUMSORT tags have the format
 (where is used to order
albums that were released in the same year). For example, "The Kick
Inside" has ALBUMSORT tag "Bush, Kate 1978A", and "Lionheart" has
ALBUMSORT tag "Bush, Kate 1978B".

sorry if this has been asked / addressed b4...

but the jive lists all your albums in alphabetical order.

thats useless to me, and i would guess most people.

can albums be listed in artist, year, album order? (yes, with the

if so, how do you tell jive to do it?

I've got to add a "me too" here. For me, it was an MP101, Twonky

like night and day. I will always remember the huge grin on my face

glorious lossless quality, perfectly gapless and really, really loud
;-)

An absolutely superb piece of kit that has 100% changed how I listen to

well obviously i disagree. u can keep the server / client model, you
just put them in the same small as u can get quiet as you can get,
cheap as you can get box.

so you don't want to buy it, so what? obviously others would.

Thanks, for this suggestion.
I tried your usggestion .
Of the messages displayed, this may give a clue to some of you:

[08-03-14 17:29:56.6789] Slim::Web::HTTP::acceptHTTP (265) Did not
accept HTTP connection from 192.168.0.100, unauthorized source

192.168.0.100 is the correct local IP of the PC running the server, but
squeezecenter does not accept it.
Does this mean that there is a problem with the safety settings being
too strict? (The "block" settings)?
I used to block all except 192.168.0.* in the 6.5.4. version (but then
again: I completely de-installed the 6.5.4 before installing 7.0)
If so, can I change those from the command line?
It's NOT the firewall: I disabled ZoneAlarm but that did not help.

Thanks again for all support

Oh, I am sure that is true: look at the Duet beta: they gave out a ton
of SBC's to get testing done. The Old SlimDevices probably didn't have
that kind of money; Logitech no doubt opened their wallets some and

interestingly, that's not really necessary (well, interesting to me,
I'm weird that way). Jive/SBC uses an overlay filesystem, which means
that you can't really do harm to the underlying base code. If you ever
screw things up in what seems like an irreparable way, just power it on
while holding the + key during the boot process. This will wipe the
overlay filesystem and start fresh--in other words, the same as
Settings->Advanced->Factory Reset. Obviously, you'll lose all your
custom settings at this point, but nothing is bricked. Cool!

There is a known issue where the text is reporting the presence of
lame, when it isn't there (playback falls back to the normal output if
it can't transcode to lower bitrate). Due to licensing issues, lame
is not installed by default, so unless you've installed it yourself,
it's not likely to be there. You can check manually, or try to enable
flac->mp3 transcoding in the server settings->file types. If lame is
not found, that will fail.

I do notice that the epoch adjustments for 00:04:20:05:a3:8a seem to be

that the packet latency is somewhat irregular whcih it should not be

I am not sure that it is as simple as our recollection being incorrect.
There is clearly a subtlety here that is missed by some, including
myself.

Re: [slim] The bandwith limitation doesnt seem to work

2008-03-14 Thread rayslim

Yes i understand that, I deleted the log file first so it is not an old
entry.

Let me explain what i also tried: i opened the stream from
winamp/mediamonkey and other apps. I set the buffer to 1MB which by the
way should be sufficiant to buffer the entire song if it was 64kbps...
but yet the buffer gets empty several times during a 3-4 minutes song.
So there is definitly something wrong and the stream is not 64kbps.
Also it is quite easy to hear if it is downsampled to 64...

Im not sure where to look, i have tried reinstall the software, but no
luck.

That says input file is 320kbps and output should be 64kbps

Re: [slim] Thanks Slim Devices / Logitech!

2008-03-14 Thread mortslim

Marc Sherman;279599 Wrote:

That actually brings up an interesting point.

When Slim Devices was Slim Devices, that may have been the case as a
smallish company trying to break out and efficiently focus.

However as a part of Logitech now, is that still true?

Which begs the question and the point for this post: Didn't Slim
Devices BENEFIT from melding with Logitech? Didn't it get a bigger
budget, bigger R&D, more engineers?

I don't know the answers but I certainly hope so as a consumer.

And from Logitech's point of view, I also hope so. I mean, I hope that
Logitech doesn't just look at Slim Devices the way England looked at the
original American colonies pre-Revolutionary war, just to be milked.

I assume that Logitech saw the vision for a stronger Slim Devices by
helping it expand beyond its relatively humble beginnings.

Isn't that so?

As an analogy, if you are familiar with the pro audio world, a smallish
company known as M-Audio (originally known as MidiMan) grew quickly,
caught the eye of Digidesign, which bought it. Now M-Audio is bigger
and better than ever, releasing ever more products every year. (And
Digidesign had previously been purchased by Avid, that accelerated its
own growth).

If you hear the music, then the above command is being executed and will

Unless run from a command prompt you will not see Lame diagnostic

[slim] Multiple albums with same name not displaying correctly

2008-03-14 Thread Bay City

Hi All
I am having a problem with squeeze center 7.0

I have multiple albums in my collection that have the name but are
unrelated to each other.

example I have 3 albums with the title Nine Lives
one by Reo Speedwagon, one by Bonnie Rait, and one by Aerosmith
they are displayed very strange in my library.
under albums they show up as nine lives artist reo speedwagon, aerosith
and the bonnie rait shows up only under artist and not albums.
I have two albums titled XXX one by Chicago one by ZZ top
these show up under albums as XXX chicago,ZZ Top and under artist
Chicago shows album XXX but under artist ZZ top does not show any
Albums titled XXX.

Is there a bug with squeeze center not being able to sort out multiple
albums with the same title?

any help would be welcome
thanks

They are, when you consider that SD has a very serialized product dev

The problem is that the assumption of track breaks when synced is
embedded in a 100 different places (I exaggerate only a little)
throughout the code. I hope to add gapless sync as part of a
rearchitecture of the complete play-control part of the server but this
is a major piece of work and some way off.

Re: [slim] The bandwith limitation doesnt seem to work

2008-03-14 Thread rayslim

Well i know the bitrate is not reduced, i am pretty able to hear the
difference between 320kbps mp3 and 64kbps for example, and the audio i
hear (when i use 3.party player and set buffer size very big) is high
quality, i.e. the stream is not downsampled. in adition the buffer runs
out just as fast when i choose no limit as to when i choose 64, also my
connection isnt _that_ bad...

could you maybe give me more details on the player.source=debug thingy?
i looked around a bit, but couldnt find out where i set that, maybe ill
have to read some manuals :)

It is pretty obvious to me that choosing a bitrate limit has absolutely
no effect on the stream on my system.

Re: [slim] The bandwith limitation doesnt seem to work

2008-03-14 Thread bpa

For stream that are transcoded - the display will the original format of
the stream and not the transcoded (e.g. an RTSP stream will be shown as
RTSP and not as FLAC which is actually sent to SB).

I suspect it might the same for files. The only way to be sure is to
check the network statistics.

An alternative would be to look at the logs with player.source set to
DEBUG - you should see the command options on Lame being used to encode
the file.

Re: [slim] Error: Couldn't install MySQL as a service!

2008-03-14 Thread bobkoure

You could also set your SqueezeCenter service to "depend" on the MySql
service (so, whenever the SqueezeCenter service was started, the SCM
would start SqueezeMySQL first, -then- SqueezeMySQL.
In windows versions prior to Vista (and almost certainly in Vista) you
do this in the registry, not the services control manager.
Open your registry editor - go to key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\squeezesvc
Look for a sub-key called -DependOnService-.
If it doesn't exist
- create it as a -MULTI_SZ-
- the data is -SqueezeMySQL-

If it does exist (maybe you already did this for MusicIP?)
- edit it
- add an additional line to the data - -SqueezeMySQL-

I'm actually a bit surprised that the SqueezeCenter install process
doesn't just -do- this - I guess it's a matter of being able to support
already-installed generic MySQL installations.

You need to go into the setting menu for that player you're using (in
this case, SoftSqueeze). Go to the audio section and select "Bitrate
Limiting", then select the highest bitrate that doesn't overwhelm your

[slim] The bandwith limitation doesnt seem to work

2008-03-14 Thread rayslim

Hi, first of all I want to say I just love your product! :)

To my problem:
I want to listen to my music from outside my LAN, and since my bandwith
is somewath limited, i need to lower the bitrate on the stream. So far
no success on that.

Ive tries to set to the lowest bitrate (64kbps) on the player, but the
stream is unchanged and my player reports 320 kbps if it is a 320 CBR
mp3 file or whatever the source file bitrate is...
Ive used Softsqueeze and other players, Ive tried to open:
http://SERVERIP:9000/stream.mp3?bitrate=64 No effect at all, the
stream is still at normal rate..

Any ideas?
