Re: [slim] SS Path for multiple external usb HDD
This is one way to do it. Creat a folder on your main drive (you could use the existing My Music folder in My Documents if you liked) and then place shortcuts in it to all the plcaes you music is held. If you have music on two other drives, put in two shortcuts dirctly to those drives. You can create shortcuts by right clicking in your new folder and selecting New/Shortcut from the resulting drop down menu. Point SlimCentre at your new folder (or My Music Folder, if you used the one that already existef)) Another way to do it is to create a shortcut directly in your first music drive to the second music drive. Point SlimCentre at the first music drive. I'm certain this must all be written in the Wiki. MC -- ModelCitizen Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known. [slim] Wiki migration help
We're getting ready to migrate the current wiki from the kwiki platform to mediawiki. We haven't set a date for this transition, but we'd like to do it fairly soon. We've done a preliminary test export of our current wiki into the mediawiki engine and the formatting/links/etc. are almost completely wrecked. It looks like it will take some volunteers to help us clean up the new wiki before we can "go live" with it. If you are interested in giving us a hand, please let me know and I will coordinate getting appropriate access for you, as well as provide you with the URL. The work will start sometime next week and we'll go live with it as soon as we have the major issues sorted out and a decent version ready for the public. Once we start the editing process, the current wiki will be locked for edits so that we don't have a version control issue. Contributions will be accepted, but you'll have to do them in the new wiki. Also, if anyone has experience in moving Kwiki to MediaWiki, we'd be eternally grateful for any advice you might have. The current export tool left behind bad formatting, broken links, and a general mess so any direction on preventing or reducing that would be much appreciated. -=> Jim -- JimC "well, she wasn't all of that, but she sure was some of that." -- BKlaas' college buddy JimC's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9428 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44765 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Hopefully he can get you up and running. I did some additional looking into the problem for my end, and found that the controller does all its communications with the server via port 9000. Only the players use 3483 right now. I'm starting to believe that there may simply be a fault in the hardware. I did consider one additional test we can try... it would isolate the AP from the mix. Can you try your set up completely wired? Put the server and the SBR on the same ethernet switch, and then use the "bridged installation" mode to have the SBC connect to the network via a bridged ad-hoc connection with the SBR. The User Guide covers this setup, if you need more information. This will simplifies the network and gives us a "known" wireless connection for the controller. If that still doesn't work, I'd recommend that we replace your Duet and bring your unit back in for more extensive testing. If that *does* work, then we have a pretty good idea that the problem is in the Controller / wireless access point connection. I really appreciate your patience and willingness to work with us on this. Hopefully your efforts will help us prevent this from happening to other users when we finally do figure out the root cause. -=> Jim -- JimC "well, she wasn't all of that, but she sure was some of that." -- BKlaas' college buddy JimC's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9428 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44418 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Wish it could filter just star-rated iTunes songs.
I have thousands of songs... But I don't like all of them so the random play feature on the Duet remote needs a way to filter good songs from bad. I star-rate the ones I like using iTunes. Hi Jim, Yes, I'm 100% sure there no firewall getting in the way of those ports, although I had the same suspicion that it has to be something related to that. I ran a packet sniffer today and noticed that there isn't much traffic on port 3483 between the controller and the server, but what is being sent is just broadcasting the name of the server, because the server name is visible in plain text, and the packets are being sent regardless of whether a connection is requested. This is equivalent to just 1-2 seconds of uncompressed audio (WAV) which is probably what the FLAC is being transcoded to. There is no room for additional buffering to be done. Hardware based on the Squeezebox v2 and higher will support native FLAC and also has a buffer almost 10x larger so periodic dropouts are much less common. To make matters worse for you, the SB1 supports 802.11b wireless networks only whereas the SB2 and higher support 802.11g. The truth is that the SB1 over wireless is not a good choice for uncompressed audio/FLAC. For MP3 it's OK because the SB1 can decode that natively and store a reasonable amount in the buffer too. Re: [slim] Tuning Squeezebox buffering parameters
Hi, I'm wondering how flow control and buffering work between the SlimServer & Squeezebox, and whether it can be tuned. For example, how many seconds (or kbytes) of audio does the Squeezebox buffer? I have about 30,000 flac files in my SlimServer's library and I stream them to a SB without any bitrate limiting. About once per hour I get a dropout in playback. I've enabled the buffer fullness display on the SB and have observed it rapidly drop from 100% to 0% (it only takes about 1 second) whenever these gaps occur. I also detect a spike of intense CPU activity on my server at these times... I haven't been able to identify the process but I suspect it might be the SlimServer. No doubt my server is the cause of the dropouts. But I was wondering if it's possible to increase the amount of audio buffered by the SB to make it more resilient to these temporary outtages? Is this a setting that can be changed? TIA, Nico PS: I've got a network packet trace of one of these dropout events if anyone at Slim is interested in taking a look... I haven't anaylyzed it in detail yet, but there is clearly a section where packet gaps between the server & SB exceed 1000ms (where typically it's < 10ms). This section corresponds to when the buffer underrun occured. PPS: My SlimServer runs on a 2.2GHz P4 w/ 1Gb RAM under Solaris 8 x86. Comms to SB is via 802.11b LAN. Wireless signal strength is excellent (wireless hub in the same room as SB). kdf;279700 Wrote: > http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=6591 Having just taken a look at this bug, I have to say it seems to me that what's being contemplated is a sop to satisfy users who are (a) dissatisfied with the default album sorting order, and (b) not prepared to add ALBUMSORT tags to achieve what they want. As soon as you start offering some options, other users will start requesting different options. For example, suppose you add an option that sorts albums initially on ARTIST. I might say that's all very well, but I'd rather you also offer the option to sort on ARTISTSORT rather than ARTIST. Others might ask for the first sort key to be DATE. Where will it ever end? Surely the bottom line here is that the ALBUMSORT tag is there to provide a means for any user to get their albums sorted however they want. No need to rely on the Slim Devices folks to implement album sorting the way you want it: just set up your tags and you have total control. If you already have a music library without such tags, it's not that difficult to use a tagging program to set them up in a batch operation. I happen to use Foorbar's Masstagger function, but I'm sure there are equivalent facilities in things like MP3tag. -- cliveb Transporter -> ATC SCM100A cliveb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=348 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44743 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] jive album sorting
excuse my non-exacting use of language, a sin i am often guilty of here. i actually can't say if the tag is "standard" or not, tag standards in general seem to be a mess and there is seemingly no ultimate authority on them. however, what i meant was that most people, and most rips via lame or whatever, don't include the tag by default. i see "albumsort" like "compilation" or other various 'extra' tags... they may be standard via some standards body, but they aren't commonly enacted by default on rips. i'm not sure if one can enable them by default on a rip, maybe you can configure EAC to do so... but mine doesn't do it. anyway, my point is i don't want to use tags that aren't automatic via the rip. and i surely don't want to add tags to thousands on albums. i don't want to go thru my whole collection adding tags that SC7 (more or less) doesn't need. if its just a matter of patience, np, i can wait for jive to do what SC7 does. but adding tags to make jive do what SC7 does? no thanks. -- MrSinatra www.LION-Radio.org Using: Squeezebox2 (primary) / SBR (secondary) / Jive - w/SC 7.0.1beta - Win XP Pro SP2 - 3.2ghz / 2gig ram - D-Link DIR-655 MrSinatra's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2336 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44743 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Maybe you should consider Jive as a WIP? It was developed quite quickly and there are still a few things outstanding. SlimServer/Squeezecenter took quite a few years to reach the state it has. Most of the navigational things I think are pretty crucial are due to be addressed in 7.0.1: * All Albums lisrings (from say, a Genre) * Remember where you were last at when you return (i.e. back track) * Reach the correct track in a Various Artists album when you've navigated from an artist that has one track in that album * Another one, which I've forgotten. There is a known issue where the text is reporting the presence of lame, when it isn't there (playback falls back to the normal output if it can't transcode to lower bitrate). Due to licensing issues, lame is not installed by default, so unless you've installed it yourself, it's not likely to be there. Yes i understand that, I deleted the log file first so it is not an old entry. Let me explain what i also tried: i opened the stream from winamp/mediamonkey and other apps. I set the buffer to 1MB which by the way should be sufficiant to buffer the entire song if it was 64kbps... but yet the buffer gets empty several times during a 3-4 minutes song. So there is definitly something wrong and the stream is not 64kbps. Also it is quite easy to hear if it is downsampled to 64... I don't know the answers but I certainly hope so as a consumer. And from Logitech's point of view, I also hope so. I mean, I hope that Logitech doesn't just look at Slim Devices the way England looked at the original American colonies pre-Revolutionary war, just to be milked. I assume that Logitech saw the vision for a stronger Slim Devices by helping it expand beyond its relatively humble beginnings. Isn't that so? As an analogy, if you are familiar with the pro audio world, a smallish company known as M-Audio (originally known as MidiMan) grew quickly, caught the eye of Digidesign, which bought it. For stream that are transcoded - the display will the original format of the stream and not the transcoded (e.g. an RTSP stream will be shown as RTSP and not as FLAC which is actually sent to SB). I suspect it might the same for files. The only way to be sure is to check the network statistics. You could also set your SqueezeCenter service to "depend" on the MySql service (so, whenever the SqueezeCenter service was started, the SCM would start SqueezeMySQL first, -then- SqueezeMySQL. If it doesn't exist - create it as a -MULTI_SZ- - the data is -SqueezeMySQL- If it does exist (maybe you already did this for MusicIP?) - edit it - add an additional line to the data - -SqueezeMySQL- I'm actually a bit surprised that the SqueezeCenter install process doesn't just -do- this - I guess it's a matter of being able to support already-installed generic MySQL installations. -- bobkoure bobkoure's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14646 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44656 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Hi, first of all I want to say I just love your product! :) To my problem: I want to listen to my music from outside my LAN, and since my bandwith is somewath limited, i need to lower the bitrate on the stream. So far no success on that. Ive tries to set to the lowest bitrate (64kbps) on the player, but the stream is unchanged and my player reports 320 kbps if it is a 320 CBR mp3 file or whatever the source file bitrate is... Ive used Softsqueeze and other players, Ive tried to open: http://SERVERIP:9000/stream.mp3?bitrate=64 No effect at all, the stream is still at normal rate.. Any ideas? -- rayslim rayslim's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16049 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44729 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I've been a follow of SlimDevices since before the first hardware was released back in 2001. I used to subscribe to the mailing list but moved across to the forums back in November 2005. I guess there is a lot of information a few of us just know, without realising where it comes from :) DanielTheGreat;279099 Wrote: > [lots of stuff about a poorly Windows box] I'll second Robin on this one. Nuke windows and re-install, I'd put a small wager on it being a lot slicker after that :) -- funkstar funkstar's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2335 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44457 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
