RE: [Elecraft] Current requirements for KPA100?

2004-08-15 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Your idea of hum coming from higher current sounds plausible here, Bill.

You didn't say what your K2/100 is actually drawing but, yes, mine draw more
current on 160 and 80 than on most other bands.

I plugged in a dummy load and here's what mine requires at 100 watts on each
band:

160m = 17.5 amps

 80m = 17 amps

 40m = 14 amps

 30m = 15 amps

 20m = 14.5 amps

 17m = 17 amps

 15m = 17.5 amps

 10m = 15 amps

That's total current reported by my Astron power supply.

-Original Message-
During a recent contest, I received a report of poor signal quality on
my CW signal on 80m.

I've run some tests and find that on 80m and 160m, there's a distinct
hum on the signal when running over about 80 watts. I've also noticed
that the current used seems to jump in discrete steps as I increase the
power level. It could be that this hum is present on the power supply
at higher current levels. On 160m, the rig pegs the scale on my power
supply ammeter when running full power.

Do the current requirements of the KPA100 increase on these bands? And
what would cause the discrete steps in current consumption at the
higher power levels? We're talking a jump in current about every 10
watts or so.

Prior to the contest, I performed the KPA100 modifications for high SWR
operation and installed the new firmware. I've noticed that the heat
sink is running noticeably hotter than before. This while transmitting
into a 50 ohm dummy load.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. The rig appears to operate just
fine, I'm just a little concerned about the signal quality and the
extra heat.

Hello all:

I've just purchased a used K2, #3269. I find that the audio output to the
internal speaker, while clear has limited volume, especially when I want to
use the rig with full AF gain, turn off the AGC and manually adjust the RF
gain control. Is this situation unique to my rig, or have other people also
noticed this? If so, is anyone aware of a mod to increase the AF output

BillAbout 20 yrs. ago, my family lived in a rural subdivision & all of
the neighbors had amplifiers on their TV antennas as some reception came
from about 100 miles away.

We lived on about 3/4 acre lots but I still caused TVI on my neighbor's TV
with my 100 watt HF rig. I understand your problem but I don't know of an
easy solution since the problem can't be corrected at the rig except with
the on-off switch. Cable TV has been a real help to minimize TVI. I
assume that satellite TV is fairly TVI immune, too.

[Elecraft] WA3WSJ: Covered Bridges of Berks County Tour Prep.

2004-08-15 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello all,

Well, today I had some spare time so I put the maps in the trunk and
tried to find the five covered bridges in Berks County here in
Pennsylvania. I left at noon and returned home around 4:30pm. I found
all the bridges and took some great pictures of the bridges and hex
signs on them.

This was a scouting mission so I know where all the bridges are to
activate them September 4-5. Look for me to activate three covered
bridges on Saturday, 4th and two on Sunday the 5th of September. You
don't want to miss this certificate that will have all the bridges on
it! If you work me at all the bridges, the certificate is yours.

Most of the covered bridges are out in the countryside so it will be
nice to activate them. Check my web site for more details. Hope to work
you soon!

Re: [Elecraft] K2#4155 speaker/audio

2004-08-15 Thread G3VVT
Used to get this problem with speaker distortion on occasion when repairing
TVs in the early 1960's, usually at a remote farmhouse three days camel ride
from base. Found the easiest method was to remove the speaker and stand it on
the magnet with the cone facing you. Carefully work the cone with both hands
to equalise the pressure, backwards and forwards towards the magnet feeling
for the voice coil rubbing. If there was a problem it was sometimes possible
to warp the speaker frame to re-center the voice coil as a temporary fix. As a
matter of procedure the speaker was replaced at a later date when a spare
became available as the problem could re-occur.

Unlike the problem with the Elecraft speakers where it looks like the damage
may be caused by rough handling in transit, these speakers failed after a
period in service possibly due to excessive temperature or humidity. Elecraft
could have to review the packing of these speakers for transit if the amount
of damaged units becomes a problem.

RE: [Elecraft] KX-1, Picnic Table Portable and TVI

2004-08-15 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Broadband TV amplifiers are darn near impossible to deal with. Your rig may
be clean as a whistle, but when the RF from your signal down in the HF range
hits that amplifier it overloads the first stage producing garbage across
the spectrum, including all the TV channels up through UHF. Even TV's not
connected to it may get TVI from the junk re-radiated by the amplifier
through the antenna.

The right solution is a high-pass filter at the broadband amplifier input to
block the HF signal from your rig, and perhaps proper shielding if it isn't
already. That's not a practical solution in cases like yours in the RV park.

The only other solution is to reduce the amount of RF it picks up. You do
that by moving your transmit antenna away from the TV antenna and/or
reducing power.

Ron AC7AC

-Original Message-
Is anyone experiencing TVI. Recently I went camping in an
RV park where most of the TV reception was via the Winguard amplified TV
antenna, not Satellite. This is a broadband receiver amp for TVs and is
built into the antenna.

When operating 40 and 30 meters CW from a nearby picnic
table into a Buddipole with close to 1:1 SWR I could see my
own TV inside the motor home 15 feet away lightly flashing
as I keyed.

The problem was somewhat less with internal batteries indicating 1.5 watts
but the dim flash was still there.

Park folks not happy, me not happy, what is your
experience?? Bill K6ACJ

Re: [Elecraft] Transmit power control problem

2004-08-15 Thread Don Wilhelm
Pauli,

Let me restate your symptoms first so you can ignore my answer if no
match --
1). You have over 10 watts of actual power generated into your dummy load.
2). The K2 display shows only a small amount of power output
3). You are getting excessive current draw (HI CUR).

If ALL that is correct, the problem is in the VRFDET signal path somewhere.
The MPU is not sensing RF being generated and tries to increase the power.
Check the components in the RF Output Detector (schematic sheet 3 lower
right corner). After that simple voltage divider and diode detector, the
signal finds its way to the control board and is present at pin 10 of the
AUX I/O header and then goes to pin 2 of U6 (there may be an 820 ohm
resistor in series before hitting the MPU pin, depends on your level of the
Control Board, the early ones did not have the resistor).

Also, if you did the keyclick mod, look carefully at that - it will
influence the ALC action, but will not likely produce the symptoms you
report.

Just a sidebar.

I work in the service department for a company that sells professional
photographic equipment. We often deal with FedEX and UPS with claims
for damage that occurs during shipping.

The FedEX guy was telling me how carefully stuff has to be packed,
because when a package hits the bumper stop at the end of one of those
sorting conveyors, it can be exposed to as much as 11 G's !!! Lots of
inertia there!

It seems to be a minor miracle that stuff comes undamaged at all,
anymore.

[Elecraft] KX-1, Picnic Table Portable and TVI

2004-08-15 Thread bprats
Is anyone experiencing TVI. Recently I went camping in an
RV park where most of the TV reception was via the Winguard
amplified TV antenna, not Satellite. This is a broadband
receiver amp for TVs and is built into the antenna.

When operating 40 and 30 meters CW from a nearby picnic
table into a Buddipole with close to 1:1 SWR I could see my
own TV inside the motor home 15 feet away lightly flashing
as I keyed.

The problem was somewhat less with internal batteries
indicating 1.5 watts but the dim flash was still there.

Park folks not happy, me not happy, what is your
experience?? Bill K6ACJ

RE: [Elecraft] K2#4155 speaker/audio

2004-08-15 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
I had a bent speaker frame on K2 S/N 1289 when I built it several years ago.
The problem showed up very clearly as a "fuzzy" addition to what should be a
clear audio tone. This is caused by the voice coil touching the magnet.

Several of us discovered them at that time. Elecraft immediately replaced
any upon request.

I fixed mine instead. I did it as follows:

I tuned in a station like WWV that produced a clear beat note in the speaker
(or should have). The sidetone might work too, but the early K2's, at least,
do not have a clean sine wave sidetone and so it's harder to hear the "fuzz"
on it.

Using a wide blade screwdriver, I placed it between the frame and the edge
of the magnet, and twisted it just enough to move the edge of the magnet
slightly while listening to the tone. If no change, I released the pressure
and moved on to a new spot. At one point moving the magnet caused the tone
to clear up. Twisting the screwdriver a little harder put a permanent bend
in the frame to hold the voice coil in the clear. Just try it in small
steps, twisting a little farther each try until the tone stays clear when
you let go. Don't press hard on the screwdriver. You don't want it to slip
through the gaps in the frame and punch a hole in the cone!

I fixed mine several years ago and I've not had any trouble since.

I suspect that it takes a huge "whack" to make the magnet bend the frame
even though it is a fairly heavy magnet and a simple stamped metal frame. It
was probably bigger "whack" than the kit would experience being shipped,
but it could have happened at any time before Elecraft got the speakers, or
they could even be something not being caught at the factory.

If I recall correctly, the speaker in my K2 came from China.

To check for a twisted speaker, carefully move the cone in and out by hand.

Just push straight down on it gently, and then let go. The cone should move

perceptibly, but the voice coil should not rub.

[Elecraft] Transmit power control problem

2004-08-15 Thread Pauli Nunez EA3BLQ
Hi there friends,

Further to my former message asking for your kelp, forgot to tell you that I
am having the problem on the bare basic K2, no KPA100 or KAT100 installed,
so those two options have nothing to do with my present problem.

When making the K2ATOBKT mods, I installed two 12 pF capacitors across C21
and C23 so I had to realign reception and transmission and it's been then
when I have become aware that I could not control the transmission power
output and that is what's keeping me worried. Not the Hi Cur message, though
this can also be part of the problem.

Thanks for all the feedback I am already receiving.

Let me clarify. The speaker frame can get distorted in shipping while not
installed in the radio. I've never had a repeat problem after correcting
the initial distortion.

The magnet is very heavy in the K2 speaker, and the frame often gets
distorted (bent) as a result. I had terrible audio and had to straighten
the speakers in two of my radios. It's easy to do, no tools required. Now
they sound great!

[Elecraft] Transmit power control problem

2004-08-15 Thread Pauli Nunez EA3BLQ
Hello friends and greetings from Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain,

That's me again looking for help from you, the Elecrafter's community.

After having solved my recent "Info 80" trouble and since I had upgraded my
KPA100 and all the F/W, my K2's configuration got quite disarranged, I
decided to implement all the mods to upgrade my K2 rev A to a K2 rev B,
before getting into the configuring and aligning task (I had installed some
of the mods but not all) so I purchased the K2ATOBKT kit and did a lot of
disoldering and soldering. All has run as per the manual but (Why there's
always a but? Is it Murphy's Law?) now I have got a transmit power control
problem.

When I key down (TUNE) the K2 and independently of the value I set in the
POWER Control (be it 0.50, 2.00, 5.00 or 10.00 watts) I always get the "Hi
Cur" message and the internal wattmeter drops to 0.3 watts, but the truth is
that the power transmitted into a very well calibrated 50 Ohm Dummy Load and
RF Power Meter (the QRP RF-Power Meter PM-1300a by SSB-Electronics) always,
and I mean always with independence of the K2 POWER Control, reads between
10-14 watts depending of the frequency.

Have made the resistance checkings and they are OK

My PS is a switched Daiwa SS-330 X with an output voltage of 13.8 v fixed
and an output current continuous of 30 A
Measuring the voltage at the K2 Aux 12v connector I get the following
readings:

K2 switched OFF = 13.84 v
K2 switched ON = 13.62 v
K2 transmitting = 13.16 v

With the Cal Cur set at 2.5 A, on my DMM I get the following current
readings:

K2 receiving = 0.29 A
K2 transmitting = 2.51 A

The DC voltage readings for the PA finals Q7 and Q8 are:

Collector K2 receiving = 13.60 v
Collector K2 transmitting = 11.98 v
Base K2 transmitting = 0.62 v

DC voltage for the PA driver Q6

Collector K2 receiving = 13.60 v
Collector K2 transmitting = 12.60 v
Base K2 transmitting = 1.02 v
Emitter K2 transmitting = 0.26 v

I fear the PA finals may be damaged so they do not obey the
POWER control settings, but am not convinced of that and
although I have the K2PAKIT ready, I do not want to replace them
unless it is necessary.

BTW, the heat sink is isolated from the Q7 and Q8 collectors.

Any ideas and/or suggestions will be much welcome.

Sure I am missing something but honestly, at this moment, I do not
know what. Look forward to hearing from you. Thanks in advance.

Best 73

I heard on local stations that I am sure were ground wave and strong. I also
heard it on skip that was stable and VERY unlikely to have been

this tone question may not be the transmitter in many cases. I was listeing to
WAE last night and noticed not just Europeans, but U.S. signals, but from the
north, had odd tones. some were from stations I know who have
clean-as-a-whistle signals. I think there was aurora even if not enough to see.

[Elecraft] K2#4155 speaker/audio

2004-08-15 Thread Joe Ford
Fellow Elecrafters:

I need help with this one. During the entire construction process
everything went fine until the very last step; I wired up the internal
speaker, powered on and the audio sounded horrible. Very raspy with cw
signals having a hollow, high pitched ring to them.

1. Headphones sound fine.
2. External speaker sounds good.
3. Loosening or tightening the speaker screws changes the sound but
still distorted.

I contacted Gary. He suggested checking speaker installation and
external speaker jack wiring. All okay there. I removed the K2 speaker
and replaced it with the internal speaker from my K1. It sounds good. So
I let Gary know and Scott mailed me a replacement speaker. I wire it up
and it sounds the same as the first one. What's going on here?

For the last several days I've been checking and rechecking. Everything
looks okay. Headphones and external speaker okay. At present I have the
K1 speaker back in and it's okay. The K1 is 8 ohm, .5 watt and the
external speaker is also 8 ohm. Can this mean something?

It does not seem possible to get two bad speakers. Suggestions will be
appreciated.
