Re: [Elecraft] K3DSPLPF Low Pass Filter
I recently installed the LPF. I did *not* make any other changes (e.g. to extend the low frequency response.) I work mostly CW but do a fair amount of listening to SSB and SWBC. In my case, the effect is rather subtle and I can't be sure it's not just a placebo effect, but I think CW notes and SSB voices sound a bit smoother. I haven't used it for a long period of time since I installed the LPF, so I can't really tell if it's less fatiguing. Like Brett, I have before and after spectrum plots which clearly show that the aliased passband images centered on 12 kHz are completely gone. However, in my case the 12 kHz clock leakage itself is still there. It must be getting into the output some other way than through the normal audio path. It was one of the more challenging mods that I've done to my K3, mostly due to the fact that 4 of the 6 vias used were filled with solder, two of which have an IC on the other side preventing the use of a hot needle to clear them. And I'm *always* nervous cutting traces. That said, it wasn't really difficult. I took my time and spent about 2 hours from power off to power on. I noticed the price on the LPF board has gone up to $35. When I ordered mine it was $25. Was it worth it? I think so. I wouldn't call it a whole-new-rig difference but I seem to think the rig is a bit more pleasant to listen to. 73 -- Joe KB8AP On Mar 1, 2010, at 8:40 AM, Edward Dickinson, III wrote: > I'm a SSB operator and am interested in the Low Pass Filter Update/ > Mod. > > Can someone with a pre-Rev D DSP board who has installed the > K3DSPLPF speak > to the improvements? > > Thanks. > > > 73, > Dick - KA5KKT > __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] IF output buffer gain Mod
Hi Dave, A "via" is a small hole in the circuit board used to connect traces from the top side of the board to the bottom. There's a small hollow metal insert in them that connects the two sides of the board (called "plated through vias") They're usually smaller than a typical component mounting hole. If you look at the picture in the instructions, the closeup on the right shows a via (the small hole) just to the left of R8. In the picture on the left hand side, it shows the little 1/8 watt resistor with one lead going through that hole. The little white plastic thing in the kit contains a surface mount resistor you can use to replace R8 with if you can do SMD soldering. If you don't have have a fine tipped soldering iron, steady hands, and a good magnifying headset, you can use the 1/8 watt leaded resistor instead. The mod gives you 10 dB more signal at the IF output connector on the KXV3. This is useful if you want to use a panadaptor (such as the P3) with your rig. It won't make any difference in what you hear through your headphones. 73 -- Joe KB8AP On Mar 1, 2010, at 8:49 PM, dbellw...@aol.com wrote: > So I see how to attach it but have no idea what a "via" is? > ... > And for that matter, what is the purpose of this modification? ... > 73, Dave > __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

So I see how to attach it but have no idea what a "via" is? I built a KX 1 without ever running into a "via" I think. And if you can see the "via" used to anchor one lead of the resistor in the photograph that is in the instructions you have either better eyes or a better imagination than I do. Apparently the "via" is the little plastic thing in the envelope with the resistor, but what is it for? And for that matter, what is the purpose of this modification? 10db more signal level at the IF output gets me what exactly? I could use a little more gain in my Heil BM-10 headphones, but is this going to get that for me without distortion? 1,000 pardons if this has already been beaten to death on the reflector. 73, Dave __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Good point! I just checked my stainless steel screw kit and noticed that there are 3 of the small flat head screws that hold the sides and top on I assume that those are the replacements to put into the K144XV. Re: [Elecraft] K3DSPLPF Low Pass Filter
Makes the radio sound a lot quieter and less fatiguing to me. Honestly I feel much more comfortable for long periods of time behind the K3 after installing the filter. I should state that I changed the filter and several of the output caps at the same time. I even tried to do some filters in the computer to simulate what I should expect and I didn't really hear the difference so much in those files but once the filter was in the radio I noticed a difference. I have pictures of the differences that you can see here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1493706/K3/Audio%20Filter%20Board/Wide%20Band% 20noise%20injected%202.8Khz%20BW.png http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1493706/K3/Audio%20Filter%20Board/1uV%20850Hz% 20BW.png http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1493706/K3/Audio%20Filter%20Board/50uV%20Signal% 20850Hz%20BW.png In all 3 pictures the green trace is before the LPF board was installed and the red trace is after. I should also note that the sample rate was different between the two captures and that is the reason behind the difference at the very high end... Anyway those are my thoughts... Some subjective and some not so subjective... Hopefully that helps. ~Brett On Mon, 2010-03-01 at 11:40 -0500, Edward Dickinson, III wrote: > I'm a SSB operator and am interested in the Low Pass Filter Update/Mod. > > Can someone with a pre-Rev D DSP board who has installed the K3DSPLPF speak > to the improvements? > > Thanks. > > > 73, > Dick - KA5KKT > > __ > Elecraft mailing list > Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft > Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm > Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net > > This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net > Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] PSK-31 Help
Ron, I would recommend you continue with HRD/DM780. It handles many more digital modes than just PSK31 - and HRD handles the Transmit function through commands through the serial port connected to the K3 with no problem. As you gain more experience with digital modes, you may want to try something other than PSK31 (like RTTY, SSTV, etc.). Besides, you said it works for you. Could it be that the problem when using the other applications is that they fail to put the K3 into transmit for you? If so, you can usually set both the K3 and the application to use DTR or RTS for the PTT function (over the serial port connection to the K3). That has two potential problems: 1) when the K3 is powered up, if there is an active signal on the RTS or DTR signal lines, the K3 will respond with a ERR KEY message until the condition is cleared, or 2) If on bootup (or any other time) the computer activates the DTR or RTS signals (many do), it will key the K3 at unexpected times. If you can work around those two potential problems, then keying via RTS or DTR can work just fine. You can also use VOX and not bother with the PTT input to the K3. Bottom line -- since you can use HDR/DM780 successfully, the audio channels are functioning, and I suspect that your problem is in getting the K3 into transmit state from the software application. There could also be a problem if your application is not setting up the soundcard correctly. If you are connecting to a dedicated soundcard (your USB soundcard) for PSK31 operation, make certain that the application is using the correct soundcard. The advantage for using a soundcard different than the Windows default soundcard is that the Windows beeps and sounds are not transmitted on the PSK portion of the hambands. Other than those general guidelines, I cannot help much more because each computer is different. 73, Don W3FPR Ron Midwin wrote: > Gentlemen: > > > > I have a K-3, S/N 1997 and have tried using it on PSK 31 on several > occasions. [Elecraft] PSK-31 Help
Gentlemen: I have a K-3, S/N 1997 and have tried using it on PSK 31 on several occasions. I've tried using it with Ham Radio Deluxe, which did work OK, but HRD seems too Microsoftish for my tastes and takes too much time to set up so I'd like to use something simpler. I've also used DigiPan, but seem to have trouble getting all the settings correct. A friend recommends MultiPsk, which is next on my list of things to try. I know that I can set up the K-3 to copy PSK31 direct, and do have the radio interfaced with my laptop using a USB to serial adapter. I don't use Rigblaster as it isn't needed. I'd like to use my computer to send and receive so I'd like to hear from some PSK31 Guru's and see what setup you like to use. My laptop is a year old HP running Vista. It has a built in sound card, and I also have an auxiliary USB soundcard, which is a Turtle Beach Audio Advantage Amigo which has a mic in and headphone out, and a manual gain adjust wheel which might be useful for setting up the PSK signal levels. I know I can send PSK direct using the CW key, but don't want to go that way either. Any inputs would be appreciated. 73 Ron AE6RH __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I've used the DTF (Dual Tone Filter) exclusively since Lyle first coded in in early field test. It works great, just like the TPF (Twin Peak Filter) works well in the Icom radios. The K3 implementation is different than Icoms and for a few months before I got my second K3 I used a 756Pro3 with the K3 in SO2R. I could not prove any superiority between the two although I prefer the K3 implementation much more. The K3 simply puts two 50 Hz 8th-order, i.e., steep, DSP filters on the two tones. The Icom approach is to peak the IF around the two tones. Accordingly, you need to back the Icom RF Gain way off to a base level of about S9+15dB for it to work well. As to your question on using DTF or not, i.e., regular DSP filter, I don't have data to prove one is better than the other. I just haven't used the regular DSP filter enough (actually not at all), but anecdotally I feel I copy weak signals extremely well and can slice through big pile-ups readily. My belief is that the DTF is superior, but perhaps not by much and probably only in certain instances. You do need to tune carefully with the DTF because it is effectively putting a sharp 220 Hz filter in your IF. A wider filter allows the decoder to see an attenuated signal and decode it when you are off-frequency a bit. Being a long-time CW contester, it is second nature for me to use RIT, or a receive-only VFO, constantly as needed while operating. However, by using such a narrow RTTY filter (the DTF), it means that I don't work off-frequency callers until the on-frequency callers have been worked out first. Hopefully, this encourages stations to zero-beat my TX signal carefully. ;>) Ed - W0YK --- Ed Muns Muns Vineyard - www.munsvineyard.com FaceBook - www.facebook.com/munsvineyard __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] [K3] Installing the PR6 pre-amp
Over the weekend, I installed the KXV3A transverter and Receive Only antenna interface, and also the PR6 6-meter pre-amp. Installation went smoothly for both, but I found myself doing a lot of head-scratching about the proper way to hook up my antenna. Finally figured it out, with assistance from Wayne at Elecraft, who has confirmed the following is correct. My problem was trying to determine where to connect the antenna feed line so that I could use my 6-meter 3-element quad antenna for both receive and transmit functions. An inspection of the circuit diagrams of the KXV3A and PR6 made it clear that these components are not intended to carry transmit signals, even though they have a "receive antenna out" port. To save equivalent puzzlement for others, here's how it works. 1. Configure the PR6 to be switched on when the K3 is set to six meter band using DIGOUT 1, as explained in the PR6 manual, and connect the PR6 to the RX Antenna In and RX Antenna Out BNC connectors on the KXV3A; connect the power cord to the 12VDC switchable power port (RCA jack) on the back of the K3, and connecting the DB-9 connector to the ACC jack on the back of the K3. 2. Connect your 6 meter antenna to ANT 1 (or, optionally, to ANT 2 if you have the optional second antenna port installed with the KAT3 internal antenna tuner). 3. Don't connect any cables to the "bypass" connectors on the "back" side of the PR6. (They have other uses, but not for normal transmit/receive through a single antenna.) 4. When operating on 6 meters, if you wish to engage the PR6 preamp, tap the RX ANT button (right next to the POWER switch). This causes the receive antenna signal to be routed from the ANT 1 jack through the KXV3A Receive Only circuitry, then through the PR6, back through the "input" side of the KXV3A, and from there back to the front end of the receiver circuitry. 5. When you transmit, the K3 automatically routes the signal directly to the ANT 1 jack, bypassing the KXV3A and PR6. Notes: 1. If you're working a strong station and want to dis-engage the PR6, simply tap the RX ANT button and you'll remove the PR6 from the antenna path. 2. Since the KXV3A "returns" the receive signal to the front end of the receiver, you can receive on 6 meters using just the PR6 or with the PR6 AND the internal pre-amp both engaged. From what I have read, you don't normally need or want to engage the internal K3 pre-amp while using the PR6, but some K3 owners have reported that they can dig out really, really weak signals using both pre-amps. (see, for example, N5GE's report at http://www.mail-archive.com/elecraft@mailman.qth.net/msg86350.html) Thanks to Wayne for guiding me through the K3 block circuit diagram and other help in working this out. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - RTTY Question
r...@aol.com wrote: > This weekend I used my K-3 on RTTY for the first time. Using the K-3's > AFSK-A mode along with N1MM & MMTTY. Hmmm ... I must be oversimplifying something: In the K3: 1. Select DATA 2. Hold DATA MD and select A 3. Hold PITCH and set it to 915 Hz [one of the choices] 4. Set RIT on 5. Set the DSP WIDTH to about 300 Hz 6. Turn the VOX on if you aren't using PTT from the CAT. I did this once and it held for all bands. MMTTY: A. If you've got the CAT hooked up, MMTTY should get the 915 Hz in MARK. If not, set it to 915 Hz. B. Set AFC off and leave it off [it will drive you nuts] C. Turn NET on and leave it on [makes you transmit where you receive] D. UOS on [if you get stuck in FIGS, the first space will unshift] E. I use the FIR demod in MMTTY and have the tap set at 128. N1MM Macros: 1. Start all with {TX}{ENTERLF} except the one for {WIPE} [F12 for me]. This keys the transmitter and starts you out on a new line on the other guy's screen. 2. Except for CQ and QSL macros, end each macro with a single space and {RX} 3. End your CQ and QSL macros with a single space followed by {CLEARRIT}{RX}. If you used the RIT, that will clear it. The single space assures [almost always] that the garbage that the other guy will print when you drop your carrier is separated from the last thing you sent by one space. Avoid {ENTER} and {ENTERLF} at the end, they'll cause your call to march up the screen and the other guy will have to chase it with the mouse. [Tnx K6XX] Remember that Baudot has two cases *using the same 5-bit codes*. Letters are in one case. Numbers and punctuation are in the other case [SPACE, CR, and LF are in both]. N1MM macros take care of the case shift [LTRS/FIGS] but ... if you configure your exchange macro with punctuation such as: {TX}{ENTERLF}N6KR DE K6DGW (QSL TU) (599-CA) (599-CA) {RX}, you're adding a lot of FIGS-LTRS pairs and increasing the probability that your Q will get stuck in FIGS. I got an exchange in the NAQP RTTY that looked like that. I use 915 Hz for a couple of reasons, the biggest is that I can hear it. I'm deaf above about 1100 Hz. Remember that RTTY is really FSK between two RF frequencies separated by 170 Hz. That's FM, and it produces sidebands [you can see them as as a forest of dots between the two lines in the MMTTY I-Q display]. I find that 300 Hz is about as narrow as I want in order to pass the sidebands. MMTTY will print strong signals at 250 Hz or even 200 Hz, but it won't do weak noisy ones. At 300 Hz width, the K3-MMTTY combo will print signals I can't really hear, I can just barely see them on the waterfall. Oh, I didn't realize it at first, but the RIT rate is linked to the main tuning rate. I use a 1 Hz rate in S&P [since I don't ever need RIT]. If I CQ at the 1 Hz tuning rate, the RIT rate is way too slow, so when I go to RUN mode, I tap the FINE button to a 10 Hz tuning rate. I've also used my K2 for RTTY once I found out there is a fourth bank of filters for RTTY. Works great! 73, Fred K6DGW __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Normal. > With DPB on, even the noise sounds a bit like a RTTY signal, and the > MMTTY shows 2 little peaks on the FFT display. > Do I have a configuration problem, or is that normal? The DPB filter creates two narrow filters centered on the RTTY tone pair. For it to work well, you have to tune the radio very accurately. Some RTTY contesters report that the DPB helps in difficult conditions. If you use AFC or other receive features in the RTTY program -- anything other than tuning the K3 precisely -- performance may suffer. 73, Lyle KK7P __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K144XV (K3 internal 2-meter module)
Hi Tom, I'm glad your K144XV installation went well. Let me know when you've completed W.A.S. on 2 meters with the K3. Still working on this myself :) For the benefit of those who have installed the 2-m module (or are thinking about it), here are a few operating tips: 1. The K144XV has its own very low-noise preamp, and it will dominate in setting the overall receive noise figure. In many cases the K3's regular preamp, operating at the 10-meter I.F., can be left off. If it is turned on, you'll realize a small improvement in NF, as well as more overall receive gain, but dynamic range will be better with it turned off. 2. If you have several repeaters in your area, you might consider setting up channel-hop VFO tuning or scanning. This is covered in the K3 manual, but just a reminder: you'll need to use an asterisk (*) as the first letter of each memory name in a group of channels to be scanned. (By the way, we're working on a memory editor for the K3 that will make this easier.) 3. The K3 saves VFO coarse tuning increments on a per-mode basis. You might want to set CONFIG:VFO CRS to 5 or 10 kHz in FM mode. 73, Wayne N6KR N5GE wrote: > I just last night finished installing a K144XV in S/N 806 and have > just finished on the air testing. > > The installation was easy once I finished the KXV3A installation. [Elecraft] [K3] [K2] Computerless Remote Control?
Remote Control: I am interested in remote controlling my K3 mainly from around the house at a distance of around 30-50ft. Internet control is also a consideration. Although not totally ruled out, I would prefer not to use a computer at the radio end. At the moment I am leaning towards the RemoteRig from Sweden: http://www.remoterig.com/ The 1258MkII has a box at each end and was originally designed for transceivers with remote head capability (e.g. Kenwood TS480). There is a serial port on each unit for rig control and mono sound is supported with a low latency. Stereo sound is under consideration for a future hardware release (probably not upgradeable). A CW keyer is built into the box at the client end. I would prefere not to have a box at the client end. A program to replace the box is also under consideration but unfortunately does not seem to be a priority. I would like to operate with only a wireless laptop and not have to transport a box and speaker. Another consideration is the GlenTek: http://www.glentekcorp.com/index.php This one has a box at the radio end only and software at the client end. The sound side is more complicated and is either dealt with separately (Skype etc.) or built in at the radio end and extracted at the client end using an Internet Analog Telephone Adapter (ATA). This introduces some latency. There may also be ShackBus: http://www.symek.com/g/shackbus.html I am not sure whether there are any hardware implimentations of this protocol available. I don't see any mention of sound. The information seems old (circa 2001). Are there any other hardware remote control systems hiding out there? 73 Tony VE3QF __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Switching on the K3 Remotely
When the K3 is off it won't respond to serial port commands to turn itself on. You should use an external device (a relay or logic) to pull a pin low on the K3 back panel 15-pin accessory connector that will turn power on. See the K3 Owner's reference (Revision D6), page 18 for the pinout of the ACC (accessory I/O connector), especially pin 8, and the description on page 44, "Remote Control of the K3", "Remote Power On/Off". Your external control device needs to ground the Accessory I/O pin 8, "POWER ON". 73 de Dick, K6KR >I would like to run my K3 remotely and was wondering how can I switch it >on remotely, is there a way of doing this, perhaps by sending a sequence >of bytes on the serial port? >Regards, >Berni >G0IDA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K3 RF suppression
Hello: I recently moved my K3 into the #1 rig position with my SO2R operation with the other rig being a FT-1000MP Mark V, and in doing so, moved the microphone input to the rear of the K3. My K3 is #616, so an early model. What I've now noticed is that I'm getting a buzzing noise from the K3 when I engage my amplifier with the Mark V. I remember having to bypass an RFC on the front microphone jack, so I checked the web site and it looks like there are a couple more chokes that need to be bypassed. While I have it open, is there anything else I should be looking for ? The problem doesn't happen at all at low power - just when I kick in the amp. [Elecraft] K3 in CQ 160 SSB
My K3 has the revised DSP. In many cases I was able to copy very weak stations clearly in heavy QRM. In some not. It seems that reception of weak stations is now more limited by signal quality of those stations than by K3's audio distortions. Cranking out PROC to 30 helped with strength and brought no complains. Voice memories ("CQ Contest ...", "59 GA" "NO9E", and "73") with controls via N1MM initially made operations very convoluted (until I learned forced log) but then very rewarding. Re: [Elecraft] K5ZD on K3
Heck, even my K2 has reawakened my interest in contesting. I did a little bit of hunting/pecking in CW contests back when I was in college. The club station (W5EHM at UT Austin) had a TS-830 and a huge tribander on top of the engineering building and I'd make quite a few QSO's from there. After that, I've tried it with my 706MKIIG with my own ants and it's just a tragedy of desense and IMD, so I kind of lost interest in contesting, at least on my own. During the recent CW DX contest, tho, I was just stunned and amazed with my K2's RX as I was able to crawl right inside the holes here and there in between the big run freqs and find all kinds of faint stations. XFIL was all I needed to get rid of them completely hi hi. I even worked two stations (a P40 and a KH6) on 15 meters with my indoor ant and 10 watts. So I'm probably going to try to get back into contesting, even working those 2 stations was quite a thrill But as for the rig, I can only imagine the "wall" you can have with the K3, even as good as it is with my K2! 73, LS W5QD -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/K5ZD-on-K3-tp4653852p4654871.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Jorge it works the other way also. Many times I've been running EU on 10m only to have a Caribbean or South American station start transmitting near my QRG. They don't hear me because I'm beaming EU and only copy them via weak backscatter so they cannot hear me when I send "QRL". Even worse is when some DX station starts operating split and QSX on my run frequency. Such is life in contests and has nothing to do with the K3. 73, Bill -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/K5ZD-on-K3-tp4653852p4654508.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] the K3 is a very technical radio
"the K3 . . . is a very technical radio." It certainly is. My first kit shipment arrived in November, and I've been engaged ever since in building, testing, reading, dis-assembling, asking questions, scratching my head, dicking around with optional options in the apparaently endless parameter menus, and even a little operating. I've been interested, engaged, pleased and occasionally baffled and frustrated. It's been a steep learning curve but I've now [nearly] got it set up exactly the way I want it. It is to this time what homebrew was to the Fifties, but with much less aroma of melted solder. eric VA7DZ -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K144XV Reviews
I also ordered mine at Dayton and received it last week. It is installed and working 100%. I'm seeing the full 10 watts output. RX seems very good. Two small problems with the install. The supplied cross brace had one screw hole mis-aligned. Also the three screws to mount the 144XV to the side panel were missing. I used three brass screws I had on hand. A short call to Elecraft and a new cross-brace and the three missing matching black screws are on the way to me. I could of drilled out the bulkhead to accommodate the misaligned screw hole but didn't want to get any metal chips inside of my K3. If the original brace didn't have metal removed from the 144XV area I could of just trimmed it to fit around the 144XV. But if I did this it would of weakened it to the point that its purpose would have been defeated. It will be a simple job to replace the brace when it arrives. I won't even have to pull the K3 offline. I'm not complaining about the two small hardware issues. As it was from the first group ,one can expect some minor fit and finish problems. I would give it an EHAM 5 of 5 ! 73 Jeff kb2m On 3/1/2010 2:23 AM, Brett Howard wrote: > Also if someone has recently gotten > theirs I'd be interested if you could mention when youu ordered. mailing list __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Very interesting... So that´s means if I am in 14001.00 running in a contest +9000 miles from Europe and USA he can land in 14001.15 and start running and of course I will not interfere him, but obviously he will be louder than me when condx open between USA and Europe. If I have a K3 maybe I cannot heard him in 14001.15, but the European guys that not have one will heard K5ZD and not me while condx better between Europe and USA. So all Europe must have a K3 to heard both K5ZD and CW5W, interesting, very good news for Elecraft :-) But no problem Randy, you are a friend, just I hope we choose a properly far apart frequencies, hi hi hi... 73, Jorge CX6VM/CW5W -Mensaje original- De: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] En nombre de Bill W4ZV Enviado el: Lunes, 01 de Marzo de 2010 10:26 a.m. Para: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Asunto: [Elecraft] K5ZD on K3 Interesting comment from the contest reflector by Randy K5ZD. After all, I was working people and making good scores. Sure, there would be times I would have trouble finding a frequency or copying a station through strong signals near the frequency, but that's contesting, right? After purchase and use of an Electraft K3 for CQWW CW and recently ARRL DX CW, I have changed my opinion. Very simply, the K3 was directly responsible for my #1 or #2 USA score (subject to log checking) in WW CW. I say this because it enabled me to get into some prime run frequencies low in the band on 40 and 20 meters that I would have never tried in the past. (I had almost given up on ever trying to CQ below 7025 in a DX contest.) The difference is the receiver. It is so quiet compared to my FT1000D, a radio I had been very satisfied with for years. No pops or beeps or phantom signals. Top ten contest stations are loud. People hear us. Success comes from being able to hear. Even a few avoided repeats per hour can add up in total score over the course of a weekend. Its probably like antennas. A single antenna works fine. Add a stack and you can't really hear much difference when switching back and forth on any given signal. Yet, over the weekend you find your scores are higher with the stack. I suspect the K3 is providing a similar advantage. Not much when listening to any given signal, but an advantage over time. I am sure there are other high end radios that are just as good. The K3 has certainly impressed me with its receiver (especially on CW). It doesn't have quite as nice of a sound on SSB to match the effectiveness of CW, but that's not my favorite mode anyway. 73, Randy, K5ZD -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/K5ZD-on-K3-tp4653852p4653852.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Se certificó que el correo entrante no contiene virus.
