[Elecraft] KPA kicking out

2011-07-29 Thread W2XB
Last night and tonight working cw on 40 meter for about half hour the KPA500
kicked out of "operate. No respose changing to "standby" or "operate". I had
to turn off the amp and the K3 to get it back to normal.
Using the aux cable in the K-line setup. Noticed when the amp kicks out the
K3 stays at low power.
 Anyone else have this problem?

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 on 240 VAC in the USA?

2011-07-29 Thread AB3EN
I run my KPA500 on 240V and did the cut and replace plug job. The amp works
great and the plug is 3 feet from the breaker panel. The only concern I had
was having the female end the same as the 120V type cords. I wrapped red
tape aroung the power cord on the female side to warn stupid people like me
that the voltage was changed on the male side. The amp is a real piece of
art! I love it. Great job Elecraft!!

FYI I noticed the same on my #4717 kit (delivered last September). I
normally use headphones so I never noticed it before. I believe ~12 kHz was
getting into the DSP chain before the LPF mod to the DSP board was done so
perhaps that's a clue. BTW I have no switching PS anywhere and this is
definitely coming from the K3 itself.

This would be VERY annoying to someone with good hearing in a quiet shack.
I can minimize it by slight head movement (standing waves) but that's not a
good solution.

[Elecraft] AM

2011-07-29 Thread Phil LaMarche
I recently sold all my heavy metal - Valiant II, 51J-4 and CE 200V. I
operate AM quite a bit. SO, today I gave the K3-KPA500 its first test on AM.
Operated several hours and received glowing reports on the signal quality
and modulation from some old timers. Said it sounded like plate modulation?
Using a RE-27 microphone. Just wanted to share with the gang. I am very
pleased, thank you Elecraft.

[Elecraft] Detroit Maker Faire July 30/31 Elecraft K3/P3 demo

2011-07-29 Thread Dave New, N8SBE
I'll be at the Detroit Maker Faire this weekend at the Henry Ford
Museum, in a joint effort of the Ford Amateur Radio League (FARL), the
Livonia Amateur Radio Club (LARC) and the Washtenaw (ARROW) club,
running special callsign N8M.

I'll be bringing my K3/P3 (both built from kits) to show off and make
some contacts, likely on 40 and 20 meters. I'll also be running
'pedestrian' mobile with my Yaesu FT-817 (maybe next year it will be a
KX3!), wandering around the exhibit area.

Look for us either on the air, or if you are in the area, come see us in
person. We will be in the museum courtyard, along with the model
rocketry exhibit.

Here's a link to the Detroit Maker Faire site, for more information:

The 10-MHz ham-band filter is definitely wide enough to provide
adequate MDS at 10 MHz. The same goes for the 14 MHz filter at 15 MHz,

Re: [Elecraft] [SECC] Mosley TH-3jr Weirdness

2011-07-29 Thread Julius Fazekas n2wn
Rich,

Suggest you look into silicone hose repair tape for the coax connection.
Electrical tape tends to unwrap and/or leave a messy residue. This stuff can
be found in the garden hose section. It's a bit more expensive, but does a
great job. I've wrapped my Steppir Boots with it, great UV protection.

NeverSez (sic) or aluminum wiring protection goo found at an electrical
supply house will work. There's copper based stuff that is marine grade and
used on thing like propeller bolts that will work well too. Wear gloves or
have rags around, it's messy and will stain.

I wouldn't bother cleaning the whole element, unless you're going to paint
them (or powder coat). They'll oxide again. From street level you'll never
know either.

Don't forget to protect the joints and hardware on your Glenn Martin as
well.

See ya on da air...

Re: [Elecraft] k3 & WWV

2011-07-29 Thread Paul Christensen
FWIW, I try and use 10 MHz as a last resort for zero-beat. The house is
filled with 10 MHz clocks from various electronic appliances, all of them
being nowhere near WWV accuracy so it can make zero beat adjustments
difficult, depending on the incoming signal strength. However, when I make
a check, it's when the K3 is on the 30m band.

Because of potential interference issues, including my own GPS-DO, I prefer
to use CHU since they transmit at odd carrier frequencies that are not as
subject to interference from nearby clocked sources. CHU has relatively
good coverage down to the southeast, but I also acknowledge that CHU is not
heard in many parts of the world.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 on 240 VAC in the USA?

2011-07-29 Thread Edward R. Cole
I use top run 600w with my 2m-8877 running on a HV PS that ran on
120vac. As I recall voltage drop was about 5vac, but my house is
wired with 12ga wiring. When I switched to a bigger PS that could
provide enough to run 1.5kW on the 8877 I ran 240vac to the shack
using about 35 foot of 8-4 wiring (3-8ga plus safety ground). I
decided on using twist-lock receptacles and plugs. All the material
was bought at Home Depot.

I am now in process of wiring in a transfer switch at my meter to
permanently connect my 6500w Honda standby generator. The generator
takes a four-prong twist lock plug.

BTW my line runs 244vac unloaded and 242vac when key-down with 1400w
CW. I added two 120vac circuits to run some other power supplies
from the new 240v power feed (I installed a 40A load box in the shack
with one 240v-20A and two 120v-20A breakers). Now I wil have to add
another 240v outlet to run a 50v-50A switching PS for my 1100w 6m PA.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 DSP

2011-07-29 Thread Wayne Burdick
The KX3 will have the same WIDTH range as the K3 (down to 50 Hz). It
will also have an "APF" filter function (audio peaking filter) for CW,
with a dedicated switch to turn APF on/off. APF is especially useful
for a low-power radio that may find its way into QRP contests, where
many CW signals are right at the noise level.

Bob,

One kluge is to set L-MIX-R to Ab Ab and LIN OUT = Phones
You'll get both the main and sub audio on one channel.
It does require riding the main/sub AF gain control at times.

I use this with my DXP38 TNC.

One can usually ID the station being worked by copying the 5nn they send
by ear anyhow. You don't always have to decode his call.

Re: [Elecraft] Pileups and the KPA500

2011-07-29 Thread Jim McDonald
If you're using MMTTY for RTTY, it's easy to copy RTTY on the subreceiver.
Install a separate copy /instance in a folder separate from the initial
installation. Run a stereo cable from LINE OUT to the sound card and set
the main receiver's MMTTY to use the left channel and the subreceiver's
MMTTY to use right channel.

The info has been described here and also on the RTTY reflector, I think.

The same approach can be used with hardware TUs or other programs - a
separate decoder for the subreceiver.

If you're using the built-in decoder in the K3 to copy RTTY, I don't think
there's a way to use it with the subreceiver. That decoder is handy, in my
opinion, but can't match MMTTY or whatever.

I find the P3 helpful for working split, including on RTTY.

I was probably just lucky, but I worked them on 15M RTTY on the first call.

2 Bands RTTY, 3 bands CW including a 6m QSO with my 3el steppir.
May even shoot for another amp.
I will really know after the weekend how it really holds up during IOTA contest.
At the Mo it's so so so quiet you don't know it on.
Working during a contest is another matter and I wouldn't expect the amp to
remain so, but i'll know by 12 utc Sunday afternoon!!

Lee, for chasing DX, the beauty of the KPA500 is instant-on, no-tune, auto
bandswitch. ST0R and VK9HR have appeared on various bands and modes, and the
amp is always ready for anything. Once you can hear the guy, it's just a
matter of putting your call in the right place at the right time -- no
fussing with amp tuning. I've worked each of them several times without ever
spinning the fan in the amp.

Re: [Elecraft] Pileups and the KPA500

2011-07-29 Thread ROBERT GARCEAU
I worked them on cw, 17 meters, using a 3 el steppir at 36 feet.
I have the sub recvr, so I was able to track his method of operations and had
no
problem working him.

However, on RTTY, that's been another story.
Actually, have no way (or haven't figured out a way) to copy RTTY on the sub.

Actually, since I have the 1 contact that I need, I'm going to wait till next
week and try to work them on some of the other bands.

To add a little bit about the KPA500 at this station.
Anything else that I have heard I have worked since I got the amp.

I'm very happy with the product.

In our day and age it seems that Common Sense is in short supply.  If you don't

[Elecraft] Speaking of comprehensive owners manuals – Check out the new K3 manual by KE7X

2011-07-29 Thread John Lawrence

As Don, W3FPR has just suggested, a comprehensive owners manual for the K2
would be nice to have. As a model, the newly released “The Elecraft K3”
Design, Configuration, and Operation by Fred Cady, KE7X is a great example to
follow. Fred did a great job and should be and bought by all K3 owners. It
covers the P3 too.

It contains lots of graphics diagrams and schematics plus its 288 pages is
bound just like the Elecraft manual I bought my copy through Lulu.com and
received it here in Maine via regular mail in just 4 days.

Thank you Fred. How about doing a K2 manual?

John, W1QS

Chuck,

The "do-it-yourself" solution is to purchase a plug that matches your
socket, cut off the 115 volt plug and install the 230 volt plug. Those
plugs are available at DIY and hardware stores as well as at electrical
supply centers.
