Re: [Elecraft] K3 Configuration/Menu Item Spreadsheet With Default Values?
G'day Jim: Thanks! WB6RSE sent a copy of your spreadsheet and his modified version of it. My use is to help with harmonizing the five or six K3 radios we will have at PJ2T prior to CQWW CW. Last year, we had one operator-owned K3 that was so messed up that no one was willing to use it (AGC, and other stuff as well). This year, we'll record setting in the spreadsheet on all radios and check for divergences. Re: [Elecraft] Guidance Please: XG3 Signal Source Sending CW String
Thanks Don! Got some variants that work in several of the macros, including: WM,^3[30TEST_TEST_TEST_K8ND_K8ND_K8ND_TEST$10#;PF,01,01; The underscore meta-character substitution required for space was a confuser, as was the initial condition when starting. 73, Jeff K8ND Jeff, Go back to something more simplistic - just set the XG3 for normal signal generator operation. Do you hear the signal? If not, check with XG3 Utility to see what frequency the XG3 is set to produce. Once that has been verified, try the message - you should hear it at that same frequency unless you have something in you coding that is changing the frequency. There is no more, but try with a more simplistic sequence - just the text (no power level changes, etc.) and see if that works for you. Once you have that working, try adding other things one at a time until you have what you want. 73, Don W3FPR On 10/10/2015 7:46 PM, Jeff Maass K8ND wrote: > G'day Don: > > The XG3 was on '30' to start, with the LED on solid. > > When I pushed/held the 'PF1' button to start the sequence, the '30' LED > began to blink and continued blinking while the sequence ran. > > Is there more? > __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] Guidance Please: XG3 Signal Source Sending CW String
G'day Don: The XG3 was on '30' to stat, with the LED on solid. When I pushed/held the 'PF1' button to start the sequence, the '30' LED began to blink and continued blinking while the sequence ran. Is there more? 73, Jeff K8ND __ Jeff, What band LED is illuminated on the XG3? That message sequence you specified does not set the band, so you will have to set the XG3 output manually to whichever band/frequency the XG3 is set for. I then entered the string to enable the use of the PF1 button to initiate the message function, as shown below: Set up the PF1 key for Morse memory sending: PF,01,01; configure PF1 to send Morse memory. To play the memory, either hold down the Band+/PF1 key or send S,01; over the serial port. When I pressed and held the PF1 key, 1) the '30' LED began to blink; 2) the level changed on the XG3 from one to another to another as described in the command documentation above, and 3) continues forever. HOWEVER, there is no output of CW or carrier to the radio. I watched the P3 display carefully for any sign of the output keying, but No Joy anywhere near 10.120 MHz. I think that only two of those listed radios are actually owned by the Caribbean Contesting Consortium (CCC), the club that has built, maintains, and operates PJ2T. All the other radios are on loan - short term, long term, or permanent. Most of our dues and rental money goes to maintenance expenses. It's very costly to keep towers and antennas standing on a cliff 37-feet above the ocean! For example, the three towers each get re-painted with (very expensive) 2-part epoxy marine paint once per year, partly by Club members and partly by a commercial company. It's first test under "true fire" was for CQWW 160 CW in January, where W8WTS and I finished as the #3 Worldwide station. That's on 160 Meters from 12-degrees North of the Equator! At PJ2T, we have four permanent stations and thirteen transceivers either in use or as spares (seven FT-1000MP, FT-2000, two IC-765, Omni-VI, TS-930, TS-940). Changing direction at this point is a financial decision, as we are not a "deep pockets" operation. I see the nature of the K3 as an advantage rather than disadvantage, performance aside. If a radio needs repair on the island, it must be carried back in someone's luggage, repaired, and then returned to the island. When a piece of equipment is returned to the island, there is the very real possibility that the island's Customs folk might charge 10% duty on it - this has happened multiple times to us. With a fleet of K3 radios, a stock of replacement boards could be maintained and all the moving of radios eliminated. Plus, if a radio *does* need returned to the USA, it weighs much, much less and is considerably smaller than an FT-1000MP! Any radio seems complex until you become familiar with it. 73, Jeff K8ND __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] Utility of 1.8-KHz vs 2.1-KHz Filter for SSB?
For those using the 1.8-KHz roofing filter for SSB in crowded band conditions, how usable is it? Does it require much "fine tuning" of controls when switching from a 2.8-KHz filter, or can it be as simple as just selecting the filter? I've used similar filters for the FT-1000MP, and had no problem making signals intelligible when switching between wide and narrow SSB filters. I like the idea of using a 1.8-KHz filter on CW as well, to supplement my current selection of 250-400-1000 Hz. I'm preparing to carry my K3 to the PJ2T contest station to give it a workout in the CQWW 160 CW Contest, and to try it out in the challenging pileup conditions we can generate down there on SSB outside of the contest. I sill have time to order a couple of filters before I depart! 73, Jeff K8ND ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: [Elecraft] KRX3 Install Problem: Extra Standoff, Front Panel Board
G'day Ron: You misunderstand my situation. I *have* mounted the nylon standoff to the Main DSP board as you describe. My problem is that there was *already* a metal standoff mounted on the Front Panel board, in the hole that you mention as vacant, and on which the nylon standoff rests. That standoff was mounted at the time of original construction (not by me), and is shown in the photo for which a link was provided. So, when it came time to re-mount the Main DSP board to the Front Panel board, the new nylon standoff on the Main DSP board want to sit **on top of** the metal standoff on the Front Panel board (obviously not possible). You can see this in another photo at: http://www.k8nd.com/Duelling_Standoffs_3485.JPG One of the standoffs has to go. The only question I have is whether I can leave the metal standoff in place and remove the nylon standoff, or whether I need to disassemble the front panel assembly to take off the metal standoff. [Elecraft] KRX3 Install Problem: Extra Standoff, Front Panel Board
I am in the middle of installing the KRX3 in my K3/100 (s/n 1152), and have bumped into a "stopper". I am at the point of re-mounting the main DSP board to the front panel board. I find that there is a metal standoff mounted on the front panel board near J31 which is in the place that the newly-mounted nylon standoff (same length) is mounted on the Main DSP board. This standoff is attached to the Main DSP board in the KRX3 instructions at the top of page 17. Has anyone else run into this? Can I remove the nylon standoff from the Main DSP board and leave the metal standoff on the Front Panel board in it's place? It looks like there are some components on the Main DSP board near where the top of the metal standoff will rest. I **really** don't want to remove the front panel board from the front panel assembly to remove the metal standoff, especially without explicit instructions. I'm sure that there are a screw and lock washer behind the between the board and the front panel, so unscrewing the standoff is a crapshoot of whether the parts behind will come out with some shaking. I've placed a photo of the metal standoff on the Front Panel board online at: http://www.k8nd.com/FrontPanelStandoff_3489.jpg 73, Jeff K8ND ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. The 2.8-KHz filter for the K3 main receiver was received here a while ago as the backorder cleared, but has not yet been installed. I just wanted to make sure that I can still swap in that part while I'm also installing the KRX3. KRX3 installation tomorrow (Friday)! 73, Jeff K8ND > -Original Message- > From: Jeff Maass [mailto:jma...@k8nd.com] > Sent: Thursday, January 01, 2009 10:37 PM > To: 'elecraft@mailman.qth.net' > Subject: Differenced Between Filter "KFL3A-2.8_2.7sw" and > "KFL3A-2.8K"? > > > I was planning to take a block of hours tomorrow to add the > KRX3 to my K3/100. > > One of the things to do is to replace the 2.7-KHz filter with > the 8-pole 2.8-KHz filter in the main receiver. [Elecraft] Differenced Between Filter "KFL3A-2.8_2.7sw" and "KFL3A-2.8K"?
I was planning to take a block of hours tomorrow to add the KRX3 to my K3/100. One of the things to do is to replace the 2.7-KHz filter with the 8-pole 2.8-KHz filter in the main receiver. I have one "KFL3A-2.8K" that I ordered a while ago for this purpose. Now I see from the Elecraft order page that there is the note: "Order KFL3A-2.8_2.7sw instead if replacing 2.7 kHz stock filter." Does anyone know what the different is between "KFL3A-2.8K" and "KFL3A-2.8_2.7sw"? Should I wait to get a "KFL3A-2.8_2.7sw" to swap out the old filter in the main receiver? 73, Jeff K8ND ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] RE: KRX3 Inventory Question: "Foam Pads": THANKS!
Thanks to all who responded with information for using the foam included, either by splitting it into two pieces or using it as a single strip. Further inventory checks found a bigger problem in the parts received. The box labeled as containing a 2.8-KHz filter contained instead a 6-KHz filter! Email has been sent to Elecraft for an exchange ASAP. 73, Jeff K8ND > -Original Message- > From: Jeff Maass [mailto:jma...@k8nd.com] > Sent: Thursday, January 01, 2009 3:54 PM > To: 'elecraft@mailman.qth.net' > Subject: KRX3 Inventory Question: "Foam Pads" > > > I have just inventoried my KRX3 box preparatory to installing > it into the K3. > > All the items on the inventory appear to be as needed, except > in the D850334 "KRX3 Hardware Bag". > > I do not have anything labeled E850324, "Foam Pads". > From the photo, this appears to include two foam strips. > > What I have instead is an envelope labeled as E980148, which > contains one foam strip. > > Am I headed for a delay, or is only one pad required? > > > 73, Jeff K8ND > > ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] KRX3 Inventory Question: "Foam Pads"
I have just inventoried my KRX3 box preparatory to installing it into the K3. All the items on the inventory appear to be as needed, except in the D850334 "KRX3 Hardware Bag". I do not have anything labeled E850324, "Foam Pads". >From the photo, this appears to include two foam strips. What I have instead is an envelope labeled as E980148, which contains one foam strip. Am I headed for a delay, or is only one pad required? 73, Jeff K8ND ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] Proper Heil Microphone Adapter?
I have three Heil headsets, each with the HC4 element. These are *not* the Icom "iC" versions. Which is the correct Heil adapter for the front panel connector? Kenwood? I've been sorting through the archives, and have not found a clear answer. 73, Jeff K8ND ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: [Elecraft] TRAVELING WITH THE K3
I'm afraid that carrying the K3 as carry-on is not going to be practical, since I already have my two items (carry-on and personal item) planned. One is $13K of camera and lenses, and the other is my laptop and supporting photography hardware. This laptop workstation cost more than the cost of my full-up K3/100! This is for a trip to the PJ2T contest station for CQWW 160 CW in January, and I *always* carry more electronics and fragile equipment than can be put into carry-on items. This will be my thirteenth trip to Curacao since 2002, and so far (knock head) I haven't lost so much as a pair of underwear from checked luggage. I've purchased a Pelican 1550 case for the K3/100, which I'll lock with a TSA lock and put inside one of my large hard-sided checked bags. I like Rose Kopp's bags for less stringent travel requirements, including carry-on transport. 73, Jeff K8ND K9ZTV k9ztv at socket.net Fri Dec 12 12:03:54 EST 2008 I wouldn't "trust the K3 to checked baggage" ... PERIOD! You'd be surprised at how much luggage physically disappears each year in the airline system, never to be seen again. My electronics are ALWAYS carry-on. [Elecraft] Transport Case for K3?
I'm looking for recommendations for a small padded case for a K3, which could in turn be placed into checked luggage. I'd like something not much larger than the radio itself, with space for the radio alone. What have others found that will protect a K3 during transportation? 73, Jeff Maass K8ND ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Please continue to post when your backordered KRX3 (2nd receiver) arrives, along with your order date and/or K3 serial number associated with the order!
