[Elecraft] K3 on MARS?

2007-04-28 Thread W2AGN
Will the K3 be capable of operation on MARS frequencies? It appears with the
TXCO it would be ideal, if it will transmit outside Ham Bands.

If I may dare to make a suggestion. There are going to be a LOT of questions.
May I suggest a 'K3 FAQ" on the web page with the most "Frequently Asked"

I wasn't really complaining. I just am trying to figure out what is considered
"off-topic" and what is not. It appears to be a perplexing puzzle on many email
reflectors. I have determined that a topic will be quashed as "off-topic" IF:

1. It expresses an opinion contrary to that of the list owner/moderator.

2. It criticizes a "Scared Cow" such as ARRL, etc.

3. It upsets someone enough that they send complaints to the list
owner/moderator, thereby causing him work.

4. It is initiated/continued by an individual who is viewed as a "troublemaker."

There must be others I haven't figured out yet.

Re: [Elecraft] Signing "/QRP"

2007-06-13 Thread W2AGN
Well, I must have missed the memo. I thought this was the "Elecraft" list. But
for the past couple weeks, it appears to be a general discussion list. I though
the various and sundry "QRP-L" lists were more for that. Of course, I note a lot
of cross-posting, so I guess folks like to see their words of "wisdom" on
several lists.

I wonder where one finds information about the K3 and K2, etc? Maybe on the
"Bird-watchers" list?

[Elecraft] Offensive

2007-06-13 Thread W2AGN
Well, I apparently have offended one of the folks on the list, who advises me I
am a "sarcastic malcontent," due to my earlier post in reference to the rather
odd topics that seem to have taken over the Elecraft List, such as:

1. English (idioms and vernacular)
2. The Best handi-talky
3. RST S meter readings
4. The Woodpecker
and of course the classic "Signing /QRP"

So sorry if my ignorance has caused me to fail to recognize the relationship of
the above to Elecraft products. It was pointed out to that 'Signing /QRP" is on
topic since Elecraft makes QRP radios, and the Subject is /QRP? therefore it is
relevant. Therefore since many of us speak English into our Elecraft
microphones, #1 above is also on topic. Handi talkies are usually QRP, so
there';s #2. Of course the K2 and K3 have S-meters, so that takes care of #3. #4
is a bit more difficult, but I am sure it is obvious to my critic.

So sorry, carry on, as they say. As you were.

The term "Ham Radio" has been used at least for 75 years, possibly more. Most of
us "old-timers" are proud to be Hams. But then, we took "real" exams and even,
back in the olden days, had to pass a Morse Code test. (After walking barefoot
in the snow 5 miles to the FCC examiner, of course).

Perhaps the term "Ham Radio" has become outmoded, with the new trends in Amateur
Radio, no more code test, memorized exams, etc. So maybe we should "repackage"
ourselves.

I know! Why don't we call it "Citizen's Band?" (CB for short).

I always find it interesting that new "Hams" are so defensive. Whenever anything
favorable is mentioned about the "good old days" they immediate spring to the
counter-attack. I believe a good analyst would find symptoms of low self-esteem
in this.

As for your operating and building skills, congratulations. You obviously chose
to go beyond the memorization of simple questions, and improved your knowledge
and skills. I fear you are an exception. For every one truly motivated Ham such
as yourself, there are another 10, of whom at least 5 never get beyond the
Handi-talky on the belt stage, and 5 drop out altogether, after finding that
they were woefully ill-equipped by the memorization of the exam questions.

But, you say, we need MORE HAMS. As the ARRL preaches from the Holy City in
Connecticut, bring in MORE HAMS! Well, this old-timer saith unto ye, we need
BETTER HAMS, not MORE HAMS.

BTW, the term is "whippersnappers."

[Elecraft] ESSB- What About Pactor III?

2007-08-13 Thread W2AGN
Everyone gets into such a high dudgeon about ESSB, but I see no one here
complaining about PACTOR III, which is a proprietary mode which takes up the
same bandwidth as a SSB signal, but is allowed in the "data" parts of the bands,
INCLUDING 30M. Not only that, but it is employed by dozens of "robot" stations,
whose purpose is to pass EMAIL on the Ham Bands. This is a lot more threat to
the bands than a few experimenters playing with ESSB, since the ARRL is pushing
the email forwarding, or "Winlink," as the "be all, end all" of Emergency
Communications.

And yes, you can probably run it with your K3. Just spring another $1000+ for a
modem from SCS (a German Company) and you can get on the bandwagon.

query. It never showed up on the list, although I attempted twice. I never
received a "rejected" or "moderated" notice. Am I being censored for some reason?

There was a moderate amount of activity for the TAC contest. I did not
hear a single LAITF competitor. Possibly those folks politely figured
TAC had seniority (which it did). Hopefully LAITF will be scheduled with
more care to avoid overlap next year.

Made only about 15 QSOs in TAC in a period of 2 hours. Most on 20M.

[Elecraft] K2 on MARS

I have used my old K2 (QRP Version) several times to check into NJ
NAVMARCORMARS nets with excellent reports. I have been involved with MARS on

[Elecraft] T1 ERRATA

2005-04-01 Thread W2AGN
I was pleased to complete my T1 yesterday, after receiving a couple of missing
1/8 watt resistors from Elecraft. Everything worked right away. Happy Dance
time..

Then today..I receive another envelope from Elecraft with Errata, changing R1
and R2 to 1 watt, and T2 to 2 stacked cores. Oh Joy, now I get to take it all
apart, desolder the resistors and T2, all while trying not to melt anything I
shouldn't.

Elecraft really pulled an April Fool on me!

Well, I just finished doing the changes and everything is OK. Didn't melt
anything, and everything fits, and the T1 still works!

I wasn't picking on Elecraft, just noting that I am not one that should be
given an extra opportunity to screw up!

My main complaint about the T1 is...why didn't they come out with it sooner?
It is the neatest, handiest little tuner I have ever seen!

I would love to, but AB7RG, one of the "poobahs" of Eham.net banned me from
posting anything on Eham. Actually, it was because I spoke in the defense of
another Elecraft list member who had an article turned down by Eham because
it was too "pro-K2." This same guy threw me off the TenTec list some time
ago, again, for commenting that the K2 was superior to the Argonaut V. So, He
actually put in my "Eham profile" that one of my other hobbies was "making
trouble on Eham.net," and banned me from posting anywhere on Eham. I could
get around it with a phoney login, etc., but why bother? These folks aren't
worth it.

[Elecraft] "LAITF" Contest

2005-04-11 Thread W2AGN
Every year we take our radios out in the field, woods, or parks and operate.
Now let's add the dimension of observing the wildlife around us and make it a
part of the operating event, which we will call Look Around In The Field or
LAITF. The exchange will include the name of some wildlife you have seen on
that day. This contest was held last year, and is being run by W2AGN this
year with the permission of the originator, Randy K7TQ. This was too much of
a fun concept to allow to die. Break out those KX-1's!

CONTEST PERIOD: May 7, 2005 1600-2100Z. CW ONLY.

* Ants and other bugs will work, too.
* Heck, we'll even count dogs and cats here! Just for good measure
everyone can send "human" just by seeing one.
* Send a different wildlife name for each QSO or the same one every time,
but make sure you have actually seen it before you send its name. It is your
choice if you send "hawk", "red tailed hawk", or "buteo jamaicensis".
* You've got to look around and not just concentrate on the radio for this
operating event!

[Elecraft] Older K2 Problem and fix

2007-08-24 Thread W2AGN
I have noticed my old K2 (S/N 023) has been showing its age. I did do most of
the Rev B mods, except the audio pot mod, which didn't seem necessary at the
time.

Well, the audio pot finally started to get scratchy. Also the Power pot and the
RIT were jumpy. So I broke down and took it apart, applied a little Deoxit(tm)
to all the connectors between the Front panel, Control and Main board, as well
as seeping a little into all the pots and working them a few times. Put it all
back together and realigned the filters with Spectrogram. It's like a new rig
now, no scratchy pots, and the audio level has even improved.

So I guess every 8 years or so, a little preventive maintenance is in order. ;-)

I beg you pardon, but some of us have over $1K already paid to Elecraft as

My complaint was not the delay but the lack of communication. Hey, Elecraft is a
COMPANY, not the second coming! At least 200 people laid out a 50% payment IN
ADVANCE. That would be from $1000 for a barebones modular kit to around $2000
for a loaded, built K3. So figuring an average of $1500, that $300,000 of OUR
money that is in Elecraft's hands. For that, I would expect to be kept up to
date on shipping. I am sorry if that offends those who worship at the Elecraft
Altar, but I am not a believer in their divinity, just a customer.

Personal name calling? I fail to see any personal reference in my comment, other

Oh, that's OK, Thom, you always find some way to expel the bovine output. (Now
THAT was a personal comment!)

Thank you. In spite of some folks who apparently can not read, my complaint was
NOT about the delay, but about the lack of communication. I think the above will
be a big help.

On what to you base the "not for the money?" I am sure if there was not a profit
motive, the company would never have been founded.

Because those who have paid a deposit should be KEPT INFORMED. I thought that
was one of the purposes of this reflector

Yep, if you pay money for something, you expect to get what you paid for. (Maybe
that is just a American" outlook?)

This is a moot point since Wayne and Eric did, finally, answer the questions on
the delay, and appear to have instituted a policy of better communication.

You know, I would think that people that passed a Ham Radio exam would be able
to read! At NO time did I complain about the delays, but I did complain about
the lack of communication about the delays. As Julian chose to omit from his
pithy comments, I did note that it appears Wayne and Eric have solved that
problem.

I noted with disappointement the shortcomings of the Argo V receiver. I posted
